Prince George, B.C. – Members of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #43 in Prince George will be gathering at Fort George Park this morning for the 4th annual Walk of Honour.
Spokesperson Diane Parnell says the Walk of Honour is a fundraiser with money raised going to an organization called Winch House, which is a residence in Vancouver for military and first responders who require medical attention and their family members. Parnell says the facility, named after Don Winch of Prince George, is one of a series of similar homes in the lower mainland with the same purpose. She says it’s the same concept as Ronald MacDonald house, which provides housing for seriously ill children and their families, only for military as well as police and fire personnel.
Parnell says as well as Legion members the walk is open to the public. Registration is at 9 this morning, followed by entertainment and speeches at 9:30 and the walk starts at 10. The route of the walk is twice around the perimeter of Fort George Park, a distance of just under 5 kilometres. And it’s not a race, participants just walk at their own leisurely pace.
There is a $20 registration fee but you can give more if you’d like, and with that you get a red “Support Our Troops” T-shirt. As well some participants collect pledges. And Diane says the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Legion will be having a concession with hot dogs and hamburgers etc. And it’s all centred around the bandshell at Fort George Park.
