Smart Meter Options Outlined

Thursday, July 18, 2013 @ 12:25 PM

Prince George, B.C. – Having announced that people will no longer be forced to have a smart meter installed in their homes, Bill Bennett, the Minister in charge of Energy and Mines, has now announced the options that will be made available.

What he hasn’t announced is how much the option to keep your analog meter will cost you, or how much the modification to a smart meter will cost those who don’t want the radio transmitting function of a smart meter.

BC Hydro customers who do not currently have a  smart meter will now have three options:

* Choose the standard smart meter at no cost.

* Accept a digital meter with the radio off. This option will be subject to a one-time cost to modify the meter plus a monthly fee to read the meter.

* Keep the old analog meter, which will be subject to a monthly fee that will include both the extra cost of reading the meter and the cost of instituting duplicate systems.

Costs and fees associated with the options will be established by BC Hydro but will be reviewed by the BC Utilities Commission to ensure that BC Hydro is only recovering the cost of providing and servicing the radio-off and analog options.

There has been plenty of opposition to the smart meter system, from health concerns linked to the radio transmissions, to invasion of privacy through it’s capability of gathering detailed information on the lifestyles of residents. There have also been concerns of fires being sparked when the new meters were installed in homes where electrical systems may have been inferior.

I hope all the stolen power is billed over to these people as well, not just the meter reading. Maybe that would put an end to these crooks.

Sounds good to me. There’s no way that those who have smart meters should subsidize the extra cost of those who don’t want one. You want an analog meter, you pay for it.

Excellent. Make them pay.

Good. This fear mongering is ridiculous!
There is no good & proven reason for this fear of the smart meters. Most of these homeowners probably have wifi, TVs, microwaves and cellphones but choose to make life difficult for hydro workers

Well now that they can charge the two rates and are making a killing off of it you know no option will benefit the customer

rw:
They may indeed have those very devices, but they are owned and controlled by themselves.
The “fear mongering” is more about being told what and how things will happen a little too close to home, actually intrusively into the home.

With the information technology that is not completely understood by most everyone, including many ministers, the real fear is big brother , lifestyle monitoring, and the variable rates.

Now if this had been offered as an option, rather than being rammed down our throats with threats of legal repercussions (which were either a flat out lie or misleading information), perhaps this would not have been blown into the proportions that it is.

The general public is now more aware of the “real” reasons that governments and their agents do the things that they do. The government has been portrayed as “for the people by the people”. The general public is coming to understand that the real business of government is to feed big business. We are still slaves, we just think we are not because we receive a wage.

This is the same kind of bs they use for the Port Mann bridge tolling system. If you are not registered with Treo and you cross the bridge, you incur a licence plate processing fee on top of the 3 loonie toll for every crossing. When you get the invoice in the mail they inform you that they will waive the admin fee if you register with Treo. If you register with Treo you have two options for payment, by credit card or automatic withdrawal.

No option for cheque, money order or cash.

Govt BS!

I wonder how many even know what they are paying per kWH? or even care. Sign up for team power smart and learn something. If you did you would complaining.

How about all the jobs lost for reading he old meters and how much saved revenue are they passing on to the consumer. Used to be cheaper to pump gas yourself and look
What happened to that?
They used to spray DDT in the streets to reduce bugs and they said then it was harmless. Years later they find out a lot differently

As usual the Government takes the broad brush approach, and those who do not agree with their BS get sidelined, or nailed with an upcharge.

Hydro, like most Governments always forget the fact that they work for us and we own the facilities, that includes all the dams, power sources, transmission lines, etc; We also own ICBC, and BC Ferries, plus much more.

These Danny Dimwits that work for the Government and Hydro, are so into their reign of stupidity that they are no longer aware that they are Civil Servants, or Public Workers, and answer to the people/.

The people on the other hand sit on their fat asses, and let these people walk all over them.

When will the people of BC stand up and be counted.?

What the hell are people so damn paranoid about? Same ones complaining about the “radio waves” already have a cell strapped to their heads or guys, God forbid, in their laps all day anyway. Just go home, make a new hat out of aluminum foil and the aliens and big brother will be of no concern to you. Thank you. Carry on

The analogue type meters are no longer produced and over 30 million people have died from malaria since SFR was banned because some dimwit wrote a comic book.

Pretty tough to stand up Palopu when those we employ have the largest gang in the country on their side.

Paid and fed gangs usually do what their employers tell them to.

Palopu: “As usual the Government takes the broad brush approach, and those who do not agree with their BS get sidelined, or nailed with an upcharge.”

As well it should be. The reasons for not wanting a smart meter are unadulterated BS to begin with. If you want to be paranoid for no reason, you should have to pay.

We have a smart meter, but there is no cell service…or way that I can see them reading it other than the old fashioned way..wondering if we will get hit with the upcharge because their system doesn’t work here?

I notice our usage has bumped up about 10% from last year also…so pay attention.

It amazes me that almost everyone willingly puts a cell phone up to their ear every day, yet some people have been convinced that a device probably 20 feet away is killing them slowly.

Find me… Look at it this way.. Cell phone is a decision you make.. The new smart meters are forced upon us.. See the difference ?

I’m not concerned about the health issue of the so called smart meters. My concern is that we took a system that was working ok, and brought in an entirely new system, that will supposedly save us money. This is happening at the same time that Hydro is increasing our rates over the next three years by as much as 30%.

Mark my words. We will not get any savings by going to this system.

Furthermore you might want to check out who the smart meters were purchased from, who owns that company, and who has shares in the company that makes the smart meters. After looking at that info. If you can find it. Then you might have a better idea why I disagree with the whole program.

If you want to get an insight into the smart meter purchases see the following news item.

The Tyee. March 7/2011. FIRST TO PROFIT FROM $1 BILLION SMART METER PROGRAM.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that we have some Liberal insiders involved.

Anyone that thinks these things are harming them is a nutter. Better watch the sky for those chemtrails.

All I want is to Display the correct Amount of KWH nothing else, whatever type of Meter you use. I don’t agree to spend a Billion Dollars to change out good Meters, you could
have phased them in over Time when an old Analog Meter needed to be replaced!

All those making claims they will or will not hurt human health should maybe cough up your proof or st%up!

It is great that people are actually given a choice! Sure it will cost extra when one chooses not to have a smart meter, but it also costs extra when one chooses organic milk, fruits and vegetables over the non-organic kinds. Even fluoride free toothpaste costs more than the usual fluoridated kind, but it least people have a choice!

If one thinks that it this nutty, so be it! After all we pride ourselves in our democracy and the fact that people have the freedom to make their own decisions, including *wrong* ones in the opinion of others!

As long as there is no harm to society, leave them alone, please!

The main question is who profited from this transition?

Smart meters themselves do not use cell coverage, they communicate to transponders mounted on power poles. Where meters are out of range of transponders they will relay information through each other to a transponder. In rural areas where meters are out of range of a transponder the meter can usually be read from the road.

power costs are mainly increasing because of the very expensive contracts hydro was forced into with Independent power producers, 58 billion where as site c will cost maybe 10 billion. Site c has to be built to back up the IPP’s. The IPP’s where never required. They are just a money maker for ex liberals and friends of liberals.58 billion for nothing.

If your power bill is too high turn stuff off. The old analog meters needed to be replaced anyway. Who cares if someone made a profit it was either them or someone else,

P Val no one is forcing you to have a smart meter. Go turn off your main breaker grab a screw driver and pull the thing off your house. Just be careful not to stick your fingers in the socket!

So far 3 people in my family have had cancer and are survivors, my oldest son, my wife, and myself, and by my own choice I would rather be without hydro totally than chance the Smart Meters. So if it costs extra to keep the old meter, so-be-it—uturn

Palopu: “Mark my words. We will not get any savings by going to this system.”

Nobody claimed you would. It’s called ‘efficiency’. Efficiency is what people like yourself are calling upon the City to do. When Hydro does it, people like yourself b**ch, whine, and complain.

They have even backed off thier stance of making everyone switch to a smart meter, for a cost. And of course, people are b**ching about that too. Sometimes you just can’t win.

Hey whiners, make the ultimate choice… call BC Hydro and have them cut off your power. That will show them.

Being free from BC Hydro bills would be nice, but I like refrigeration. Especially this time of year, ice cubes are essential!
One thing though, the two tier billing system is just another way to rip us off. I have two meters on my property, both non commercial. One of the services routinely exceeds the tier one Kwh and costs significantly more than the other though average usage, in my opinion, is similar.
metalman.

Get a smart meter, register your account on line and use the various statistical reports that you can generate based on our interests to see what the use is for every hour.

Experiment a bit. For instance, leave your fridge door open for an hour and change nothing else and see what happens compared to a closed fridge door.

Or turn on 10 ligts which have incandescent bulbs in them, Leave on for an hour. Then switch lights to new energy efficient bulbs.

Test whatever you fancy and try to figure out yourself what the answer is to your question.

The government actions in Germany regarding solar power and the reduced cost of installing and operating solar energy systems seems to be the opposite of what some are saying will happen in Canada.

[url]http://www.motherjones.com/environment/2013/04/germany-solar-power-energy[url/]

As they say, Germany is not a country with high insolation, yet it leads the installed capacity and apparently electricity is getting less expensive.

I have saved over 2000 dollars since joining team power smart. If i had to do it over again i would pay a 1000 dollars just to get a smart meter installed. Thanks for those 2 75 dollar checks BC Hydro. These smart meters are even better than the garbage bins the city forced us to buy and go to. Now if you could only add some smarts to some people. And lock up a few others.

JohnnyBelt. BC Hydro efficiency is an oxymoron.

They are probably one of the worst run organizations in BC if not in all of Canada. We need only to look at the $300 Million over runs on the Highway 37 transmission lines to get a sense of how they operate. Secondly of course we have the IPP, that they in collusion with the Government put in place. Don’t get me started on PowerEx the exporting arm of Hydro, or the setting up of the BC Transmission Corp and then folding in back into Hydro for a cost of $65 Million more or less.

There’s more but you get my drift.

IPPs make up only 2.7% of BCHydro’s installed capacity. They are like the dimple on a pimple of an elephant’s behind.

BCHydro will make money with the new transmission line to eventually pay for it and any unexpected overruns in costs. Good thing W.A.C. Bennett didn’t listen to all the naysayers and procrastinators.

BCHydro would also make money selling power to the CNG companies if site C is built and pay for it in the long run.

The world population is increasing and so is the population of the province and the need for power and jobs.

“JohnnyBelt. BC Hydro efficiency is an oxymoron.

They are probably one of the worst run organizations in BC if not in all of Canada.”

Maybe, but we in BC have some of the cheapest power in North America. Of course, most in BC don’t realize it.

It makes little sense to employ hundrds of people to read meters manually when the wireless technology exists to automate it.

Hey X-it, did you get one of the infamous 4,000.00 bills from hydro after installing a smart meter over 6 months ago? I have personally seen one on a 3,000 sq foot empty lease without any lights installed never mind turned on. Has a 600 volt hvac off a 600 volt panel and a transformer and 240 volt panel with a plug in and that is it.

Bill comes in at over 4k, call to Hydro nets a question “what do you have plugged in?” when told nothing except hvac we are told we must have something to use that kind of power, check again… Oh, and if you don’t pay the bill they will cut off the electricity with winter coming up… nice.

No, come read my meter. Had two meter readers show up this month, guess they let their contract with the gas meter reader expire.

Average bill for summer is 40 dollars every 2 months and 60 in the winter. I was surprised how little i had to do to obtain this. Coupled by the 75 dollar refund they may be paying me to use their power. It is easy to do once you join team power smart…just do it.

A baby monitor puts out 4 times more waves and a cell phone 2 times more..get real people. slinky once you get online with bc hydro you should be able to find what your problem is fast

Bc hydro said this will help track power outages.. Well it doesn’t..
