Masters Programs ‘One More Door’ For Engineering Student
Prince George, BC – Taking time out from her summer position at Yellowhead Road and Bridge, UNBC Environmental Engineering student, Stephanie Doherty, was on-hand for Friday’s announced expansion of the university’s Engineering program to include two Masters degrees. The Westside Academy grad has completed the first two years of her undergrad at UNBC and, as part of the program, will head to UBC in the fall for the next two years, before finishing her final semester back home.
She says her entire experience at UNBC has been about walking through a series of doors, due to the unique nature of the Environmental Engineering program. The small class size has meant she’s become part of a close, tight-knit community. "I’ve been given the practical tools as a student in my first years, but I’ve also gone to engineering competitions (her team won regionals and nationals), and been a Research Assistant, and been a member of the National 3M Student Fellowship," says the young city resident. "And those are doors that have been opened as a result of this program."
Case in point – her summer job. Doherty says it was the result of a conversation at downtown meet-and-greet with engineering professionals organized by her professors this past winter.
"The two Masters programs that are going in are just that ‘next door’ and that next opportunity that I’m excited to one day be able to walk through," says Doherty, "And I know that there are many peers that will, as well."
