Enjoy The Holiday!

It is B.C. Day, a statutory holiday celebrated on the first Monday in August.
The Act to have this holiday, was first introduced in 1974 and was given Royal Assent in 1996.
The day is supposed to recognize the prioneers in the province and the achievements of British Columbians.

“The day is SUPPOSED to recognize the prioneers in the province and the achievements of British Columbians.”
A strange way to put it, rather than simply saying “The day recognizes …..”
Is the author suggesting that, like most or all other holidays, it actually does not?
People simply take it as just another long weekend, and do not take the opportunity to reflect, even for a minute, to consider our history and our achievements?
I would certainly agree with that sentiment. Perhaps we should simply call them holiday #1, #2, etc.
Or maybe they should all simply be called Family Day …. that description may be the most apt based on what many actually do over the long weekend …. :-)
Ah, gus. Only he could craft a critical response longer than the original article.
