Nomination Period Nearing End for Citizen of the Year

Prince George, B.C. – The window is about to close for nominations for Citizen of the Year in Prince George.
You may recall that on Canada Day, the day the nominees have been announced in the past, the announcement instead was that the nomination period was being extended because there weren’t enough names put forward.
The nomination period was extended until the 15th of August.
Citizen of the Year Committee Chair, Teresa Saunders says she doesn’t have the final number of submitted nominations yet, but believes it will be 5. Then, a committee of 7-10 past winners and committee members will vote confidentially, on who they want to see named Citizen of the Year.
The final list of nominees will be announced right after the Labour Day weekend, but Saunders says the ballots will have already been cast, so there is no opportunity for nominees to lobby to gain votes. “It is the best way to make the process fair” says Saunders.
Saunders says it is not easy to get people to accept a nomination as they are not typically people who are in the limelight and they are also not the type to get into a competition. But Saunders says these special people are reminded the real honour is in being nominated, and that means their organization or cause will be highlighted.
The change in the time frame for this year’s Citizen of the Year could become permanent says Saunders. Normally, the finalists would be announced July 1st then there is a three and half month gap between the announcement and the gala dinner where the winner will be announced. Announcing the finalists after the Labour Day weekend could create more momentum for the gala which would only be about 6 weeks away.
Saunders says it is also important to have enough nominations so the gala dinner, the Community Foundation’s major fundraising event, will see a full house. “Having just two nominees would make it a little thin” says Saunders.
This year’s gala event is set for October 18th at the Coast Inn of the North.

We need to nominate some real people who are not part of the “in crowd”.
I nominate the person who maintains and fixes the steam engine in Fort George Park. Many children and visitors get a lot of enjoyment out of riding that attraction.
Anyone else have any folks who are anonymous to most of us but make some of our lives a little more enjoyable?
How about Daisy Meisner..she makes more sense than most.
I say close nominations and declare Sheri Green Citizen of the Year immediately!
No, seriously. Make her the COTY and then immediately declare that anyone who wins the COTY award is ineligible for any position of public office.
Don’t go away mad, Sheri . . . just go away!
