Swift Water Search and Rescue Lessons This Weekend

Friday, August 16, 2013 @ 3:59 AM
Prince George, B.C. – Members of the Prince George Search and Rescue will be taking part in a three day swift water training program this weekend.

Today, its in the classroom, learning things like current, equipment needs, working in and around water, and some knot tying.

Tomorrow, and Sunday, Raven Rescue of Smithers’, instructor Rob Vance will have the Search and Rescue teams in the water of either the Nechako or Fraser Rivers, putting into practice the lessons they learned in the class session.

Vance says   the biggest mistake people make when attempting a swift water rescue, is what he calls jumper mentality, “They don’t think they just go in, hoping to help out.” In reality, Vance says   a rescue attempt should only  be made after the scene has been assessed and the proper gear has been put on, or is in place. “A swift water rescue is a dynamic situation” says Vance. “The current is   a huge factor, so its not as if you can just turn the water off until after you have made a rescue, that’s why it is so important that you are prepared.   Proper preparation will prevent a poor performance”.

Vance says the best advice he can give is for those who plan to be on the water, to make sure they are wearing a personal floatation device, know the area, and have the proper equipment in the event of an emergency “The goal is not to have to call Search and Rescue” says Vance.
