Shirley Bond Delivers Labour Day Message
Prince George, B.C. – Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training and Minister Responsible for Labour Shirley Bond has issued the following statement in honour of Labour Day:
"Many people believe the September long weekend is merely about the end of summer and the start of a new school year, but it is so much more than that. The celebration of Labour Day gives us an opportunity to thank the men and women who built the British Columbia we love and are proud to call home.
"The work environments we take for granted today are the result of decades of hard work by the labour movement and past governments. We will continue to work with employees, employers and unions to improve worker safety and protect worker rights.
"Labour Day is also an opportunity to reflect on our own work, the choices we have made and the goals we have. And it is the perfect time to look at what lies ahead for our province: we have unprecedented opportunities before us, and with those opportunities come tremendous challenges such as growing our skilled workforce to meet the large demands ahead in industries like liquefied natural gas.
"That’s why it’s critical for our government to help connect people with jobs and jobs with people – something we’re doing through the BC Jobs Plan and the Skills and Training Plan. We are making significant investments to ensure British Columbians have the right skills, in the right place, at the right time.
"Our goal is to move our province forward by creating opportunities that support families and build communities. We intend to do that by actively engaging with workers, employers, unions, First Nations and educational institutions.
"This Labour Day, I want to express my gratitude for all the work that the people of B.C. do, each and every day of their working lives. However you spend this long weekend, I hope you can take the time to reflect on how fortunate we all are to work in British Columbia in 2013 – and I encourage you to think about the challenges and opportunities ahead.
"Working together, I know we can build on our proud legacy and make British Columbia an even better, more prosperous place."

“I am a sinner who does not expect forgiveness, but I am not a government official.”
Moral turpitude seems run rampant among these baseless creatures. The absolute gall it takes for a member of the BC Liberal government to speak of what the labour movement has done for the people sickens me. No person with any form of conscience could deliver such a message with the knowledge of what their party has done openly to labour in this province with a straight face. Disgusting.
And then that guy who led the NDP during the last election, whatishisname, he really did a lot for labour, right? LOL
The liberals have done nothing for the people of BC but put us farther in debt and raises taxes and user fees while cutting back on essentials. I am not saying another party would do any better but we will come to a time when the workers have nothing left to give yet the gov wants more. By the time they actual admit this we will be sunk. I feel sorry for the kids in grade 5-7 as I think they will see the real results of what’s happening now
Alberta went through the same thing. Now they are swimming in money, sort of, depending on which pile one divides it into when counting.
The kids who went through grades 5-7, 10 to 20 years ago are doing just fine.
So will the kids who are that age now go through it fine when BC is selling the natural gas as Alberta is selling both oil and natural gas now.
All that Canada needs is energy resources. for the time being. They can work on getting some more brains and investment in the future when the resources run dry.
“The liberals have done nothing for the people of BC but put us farther in debt and raises taxes and user fees while cutting back on essentials” ….
It is what happens in a recession.
“We intend to do that by actively engaging with workers, employers, unions, First Nations and educational institutions.
I do not like the word “intend”, especially when there is 12 years of history of intending.
So, compared to what has been done, and what has been the outcome of that action will the next four years look the same, better or worse and will the government act the same way or worse or better?
So, with respect of “moving our province forward by creating opportunities that support families and build communities” will it be the same activities, improved activities or poorer activity.
You know, I am tired of phrases such as “moving forward” when “progressing” used to work just fine. They are governments’ jargon.
I am tired of jargon. I want to see progress. I have not seen much along the line of real progress in this community in at least 3 decades.
Without going into much detail, I would say that most of the Natural Gas, in BC is located in the bellies of our politicians.
If being incompetent was the necessary criteria for giving Politicians big raises, then all those presently in power would be due for a huge raise.
