Wednesday, September 11, 2013 @ 2:59 PM
Ft St James- A spokesperson for the Takla First Nation says they hope to have access through a blockade on the Leo Creek Rd open to their band members and people who are working in the area today.
" We are in negotiations with the blockade people and are sending down a list of people we want to have access for" .
The road north of Ft St James was blocked by a blockade yesterday north of Ft St James in the Tlazten territory.
Chief Ralph Pierre of the Tlazten Nation was not available for a comment.
The RCMP are aware of the blockade, and details as to whether any, and what type of traffic, is being allowed to pass is not known.

Sorry, who, what, when , where, why…..good story.
A bunch of natives bored i guess
They did this several years back; at a time when we went up to Takla Lake. No apparent reason. Doesn’t sound like there is one this time.
Simple nuisance factor!
Hunting season….?
I give it about till the end of the week before the loggers in Fort st James to up and make a blockade of their own. This seems to happen about every then years either on the Leo or Tachie roads.
A small dress rehearsal – practice run for Enbridge perhaps? ;-)
Winters coming?
This blockade is by the holders of keyohs in the area. A keyoh is an area over which a particular group has stewardship and usufruct. The word is often inaccurately translated as “trapline”. Canada and BC consider the bands to be the holders of aboriginal interests in the land, but many Carrier people consider the keyoh holders to be the true rights holders, not the bands. So, this blockade is not by Tl’azt’en Nation but by keyoh holders who are members of Tl’azt’en Nation.
Thanks for the info Bill. I know some Nak’azdli keyoh holders were upset with Thompson Creek Metals (Mount Milligan Gold Mine) infringement on their traditional keyohs as well.
Why do you want his info trueindian?
i’m sure there is a good reason to why the blockade. But I think a PR person from the blockader should make a statement to why they are having this demonstration will be very constructive. I think if they were to do this, it will inform the people. Otherwise the general population see it as a bunch of vigilantes wanting attention.
the tension has been there a long time. For as long as I can remember. But they must realize by now, that you can not stop the wheel. The very same wheel that sends the social services check, builds their schools and maintains the roads. Otherwise they would be hovelling in wigwams and surviving on what they could hunt.
Im not saying they need to roll over and be run over by whiteman. I think they need to unite, and forget about traditional land, and stop fighting amongst themselves and than present themselves as a united front. There are a lot of good people in the bands, but all the bad ones get the news time. Hearing rumours of Chiefs paying themselves quarter million dollars a year, while the rest of the 100 families are barely making ends meet. This is a function of how honest the head chief is, sure he can be paid well, when the members of the band are doing well too.
Blockading any road or highway in Canada is a chargeable offense. So as usual the cops just sit back and watch. Makes me real proud of these art students in uniform…
Hmm… sound like all these chief are good candidates to become Conservative senators He spoke!
As for blockading a road or highway being a chargeable offence… this is not automatically so contractor. First Nations in BC not only have the right to hunt, fish and gather berries off the land, they actually still have unextinguished rights and title to the land!
im hearing the north road is next
People#1. Rights and title is to hunt, trap, fish and gather food/medicine This does not include the right to block access to other people who want and need to and who need to use road systems to get to their place of work and or homes..say for example people who live at Takla landing, Leo Creek and surrounding areas. People in fort st James don’t tollerate these bullshit blockades especially if they aren’t supported by the full band council. In fact if a band council has a legitimate case to block land access usually the two communities fight for the common goal. Enbridge for exame will be interesting.
