What A Difference One Service Station Makes

Saturday, September 21, 2013 @ 1:52 PM

Prince George, BC –  It may be just one service station in the city, but Costco’s price of 119.9 for a litre of regular gasoline puts Prince George on the map for the second lowest price in the province right now…

According to GasBuddy’s www.bcgasprices.com, only the Costco in Kamloops is selling is regular gas for cheaper right now, at 118.9.  Other service stations in that city are at 119.9.

Here in Prince George, the price at other service stations is floating around 122.9, but still well below the provincial average of 132.4 per litre.

The most expensive place to buy regular gasoline today is on the island, where it’s 145.9 in Port McNeill and Port Hardy.  Tumbler Ridge and Chetwynd are just three cents behind at 142.9.

We’re paying a comparable price to at least one Alberta neighbour – regular gas is selling for 117.9 in Jasper today.  However, at one service station in downtown Calgary, you could fill up for just 105.9 per litre.

Great news. This is exactly what I was hoping for when Costco said they were coming. They have my business now and forever.

Let’s see if this sensational non-new story has legs in a year. It is highly likely that the gas prices whatever they maybe in a year from now will be the same across the city. Why because its gas, nothing special, granted my car won’t move without it, but it is just gas. One gas station’s gas is pretty much exactly the same as another gas station. Really the amount of time that is spent talking about the price of gas is silly and how we are being gouged. We are not, if anything we are gouging ourselves. Drive a small car if you have to drive and if you have to drive a truck, it goes with the territory.

Look at the free publicity Costco has received on this site alone.

No question they have made a splash in the local market. Even if all the prices even out (and I’m sure they will), they have exceeded my expectations in terms of their presence.

And as long as the free advertising continues, why not? People who gas up there will likely go in the store and spend more money.

And the thousands of motorists buying gas at stations in PG other than Costco tells you how important this is in the grand scheme of things ;)

I agree with pizzacook, it’s just gas. Why no news story about why a truck could be $3,000 less in Kamloops than the gouging dealers PG?

why is petrocan at 5th not advertising their price now?

It’s like getting an anonymous Christmas present from a stranger. Love it. Keep driving those prices down Costco, so I can get cheaper fuel too.

To NMG- you don’t have to go to Kamloops to get better vehicle prices. Try Quesnel-I just did- and like the ads say–trucks are cheaper in–.
As for the Costco gas prices–I expect them to stay lower-just the buying power of the Co.

The big deal is that this is the longest stretch PG has ever seen of gas stations with different prices on their signs. There is no-way that Costco gasoline is coming from the Husky PG refinery.

Truck prices. Look around. You will be amazed how many trucks in PG that have a sticker on the back SMP. Sullivan Motor Products, Houston BC.

Popped into the Crappy Tire gas station for gas today. Mentioned to the cashier, ” I like your gas prices. I must send a thank you card to our Costco”. :)

I am a proud card carrying Costco member! Thank you so much for keeping your gas prices low, keep them there and you will continue to have my business both at the gas bar and in your store!

Have to love it, Costco selling at a loss but smart marketing :) an great for us.

Gas could be 7 cents cheaper yet. How come I seem to be the only one that mentions that. If you ignore the carban tax scam it will not go away.Australia elected a new government in large part over that tax scam.

I’ve noticed a couple of strange things with the prices, mainly people not paying attention to them.

The Esso on Domano was at 1.33 when across the street the price was 1.25. People were filling up at Esso.

Today the Esso is at 1.25 and across the street it’s 1.22 and people are filling up at Esso.

I guess we must not have been paying too much after all if people are willing to pay more for their gasoline ;)

Steph99- Do you really think Costco is selling their fuel at a loss? Why would they do that, they are in the business to make money, not loose it. Do you know the wholesale price Costco is paying for their fuels?

In Bellingham, WA, the majors on Meridian, the street Costco is located on, do not match their prices in any way. People are very much tied to their product and card of choice.

The other “scam” that is going on is the cost to the stations of using credit cards. That could drop the price another 2 to 3 cents per litre at the current price. Virtually all stations in Washington state have been doing that for a year now. Debit cards are considered as cash.

Taxes on gas, for whatever reason, are not scams. They are a government’s way of getting dollars to [ay for services they are providing.

If you think ours are a scam, go to Europe.

Anybody else read Neil Godbout’s editorial in the Citizen? Ha, ha. Sounds just like a politician! For this town to see this much of a dive in gas prices, this fast, is remarkable.
He doesn’t see it that way. Its because of the time of year, its because crude oil prices have dropped, its because….. When have these things ever affected us this quickly before? Exactly.

Amazing gas prices go from 136.9 to 122.9 in 3 weeks. Only 1 reason Costco.
Prior to Costco the price was the same at all stations and the oil companies had no hesitation in gouging the customer for all they could.

The C02,carbon thing, cgaw, climate change,
climate disruption or whatever its called is the scam. Voters in Australia saw through it. Even the UN’s IPCC is backing off.

Costco doesn’t sell at a loss. Only at a fixed margin. Its no coincidence that within 7 days the price was within a penny of Kamloops. The local stations(big oil} have been screwing us for years by 10 cents a litre. Just on principal I refuse to buy gas any where locally except Costco. I bet that one year from now we will still be in the cheapest half of the province as apposed to our longstanding high end. An extra $20-30 a month in my pocket is better than in theirs.

Well you see this city has been gouged for years on gas prices. All the service stations stick together on the same price every day and if there is one change , all the service stations change the same time.
Every long weekend the same information is circulated simultaneous and the price is changed accordingly asap. People have tried to boycott certain gas stations to get the price down but were unable to because people did not stick together to accomplish this. Service stations will not have control over Costco gas prices.
How about a fuel outlet take the lead in bringing down the price of diesel fuel down? Diesel fuel prices include Regina – 112.9 / Winnipeg – 118.9 / Calgary – 113.9.

We’ll pay attention to your grocery bill people. If Costco doesn’t make on the fuel they will make by jacking up the rest if their products. You might save on the gas but you just paid 5.00 more for that block of cheddar!

Come on NoWay, you are smarter than what you just posted.

Here let me help you.

Lots of these comments show how negarive some people are.cotsco will get you some how..lol. Yeah having lower prices.. I lovethat the gas bar at Costco is here, nice to see other stations lowering their prices too.

I am absolutely certain that Costco will not raise the price of cheese to offset gas prices, LOL.

I’m actually surprised the prices have dropped as much as they have and that’s certainly good news for people who buy gas at Costco. Of course, the prices in PG now vs the prices in PG a year from now are two different things. Unfortunately, one will never be able to prove if Costco coming to PG impacted prices, but you could certainly make an anecdotal argument that they have.

I predict that when this is all said and done, some people will buy gas at Costco and some will buy gas at Esso, Chevron or Petro Canada. Gas is no different than any other consumer product and people will buy it when it’s convenient and when it’s needed.

If you go through 200-300 litres of fuel a month, then you’ll probably do what you can to save a couple cents a litre. If you go through 80 litres a month you probably couldn’t care less about saving a buck a month if it means going out of your week to seek out Costco. It’s no different than any other consumable good.

If this holds up over a year its akin to tens of millions of more disposable income in the hands of drivers in PG. Its a lowering of the petro tax the oil companies have been imposing on the city.

The Chinese ownership of the Huskey oil refinery are going to have to find another way to fund their infrastructure expansions in China. The monopoly is broken so long as Costco’s continues to see big returns on their retail outlet tied to loyalty bought by providing fair gas prices at their gas bar.

I don’t have a Costco membership, but I will soon and likely start buying more of my groceries there as well.

I always wonder who was behind the high gas prices in this town. Ownership of the pg refinery…is who?

Husky Energy, publicly traded, Toronto stock exchange.

When Costco came to PG – the price of food went down and has kept Jimmy Pattison at bay ever since.

if it isn’t possible to boycott your fav. service station then at least phone them and flat out ask what the price at the pump is that day if it is too high tell them you will be buying your fuel, cigs, lotto tickets etc. etc. from Costco until they smarten up and come on board I suspect a good loss in revenue for a time and they will see the light.

The high price of fuel is dictated by the greedy operators of fuel outlets and they all stick together. If they lowered the price of diesel fuel , they could also be as popular as Costco.

Unfortunately the gas outlets are almost always small business people who lease the operation, just trying to get by and make a little income for themselves. Its the oil companies who dictate the prices. The outlets have to abide by their direction. They only make two or three cents a litre for gas.
I don’t think the little service stations will be suffering as much as the oil companies themselves.
The oil companies have never ‘suffered’ anyway but this will certainly affect them a bit.

The Huskey oil refinery used to dictate the price of gas in this town. If you were a gas station owner and didn’t play ball with you pricing then you might not get that fuel delivery.

So Costco finds a profitable source, gets approval to build a gas bar and now the monopoly is over. The question is how low will it last and will people remember a year from now how much the price of fuel dropped.

If the margin on gas for our gas outlets is so lucrative, why have so many closed down?

I am quite sure the oil refinery does not call up all the local fuel suppliers and tell them they have to raise the fuel prices by four cents a litre on a holiday weekend.

The real difference is, using 8 L a 100km or 16 l a 100km. I know how much my Car is using and my Truck, the Truck I only use if I really have to not for buying a Litre of Milk, getting Wood “Yes”.

Wow Outwest you can afford two vehicles? Think how much gas you could put in either vehicle for the cost of one of the vehicles insurance.

You would hope they wouldn’t oldman but what other explanation do you have? It’s either put up your price like the rest or run out of fuel.

“If the margin on gas for our gas outlets is so lucrative, why have so many closed down?”

Because, like the Shell on Carney and 5th, they do not have a convenience store to add additional income to their single service.

Notice FAS GAS on Queeensway has continuously been the highest or with the highest during this shakeup? $1.299
