Friday Free For All – October 4th, 2013
Friday, October 4, 2013 @ 12:00 AM
October already, and the end of the week too!
Time for you to speak up on the issues that struck a nerve with you over the past week. It is time for the FRIDAY FREE FOR ALL.
You pick the topic, but obey the simple rules:
Keep it clean
Keep it legal
NO BULLYING!
Comments

A 30 minute international documentary, watch it and you will never look at the products you buy the same way again.
Time to wake up sheeple!
Sometimes I think you are no older than 20, people#1.
The things you come up with, I and many others who post on here learned many decades ago and I am sure my father did some of that 30 years before that.
Let’s discuss the planned obsolescence of the match. Then again, what a waste of a free-for-all Friday that would be.
BTW, I think Edison knew how to make a dimmable LED light bulb from day one. He just did not want to miss all the other “improvements” which could be made on the way.
BTW, you know that calling us “sheeple” is a derogatory term and an ad hominem approach to presenting an argument.
Furthermore, with the directive to “to wake up sheeple!” it is starting to skirt on the edge of cyber-bullying.
I do not think you will win any discussion points with that type of approach.
We are all people with the ability to think independently. So, you will do much better if you respect that.
So, you have a whole day available on this traditional Friday forum; lets see if you can learn to be more civil to your fellow humans. :-)
A lot of baby boom Canadians have most of their net worth tied up in their homes. Is it time for them to sell their homes?
Check out the top line in the latest total household credit numbers from the Bank of Canada. The rate of increase in the total household credit numbers is really starting to slow down.
http://credit.bankofcanada.ca/householdcredit
Interesting info from the UK:
“More than one million families have been forced to sell their home in just five years to meet the cost of paying for residential care, new figures have revealed.”
“The estimate, in research by the insurance company NFU Mutual, comes less than a fortnight after a separate study found that another two million people â or a quarter of retired home owners â are already actively planning to sell their home to fund their old age.”
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/personalfinance/10283259/Elderly-care-crisis-claims-a-million-family-homes.html
And last but not least:
Big gap between income boomers need to retire and what they have: study
http://www.globalpost.com/dispatch/news/the-canadian-press/130828/big-gap-between-income-boomers-need-retire-and-what-they-hav
“A lot of baby boom Canadians have most of their net worth tied up in their homes. Is it time for them to sell their homes?”
Councillor Stolz might want to consider that. ;-)
“A lot of baby boom Canadians have most of their net worth tied up in their homes. Is it time for them to sell their homes?”
So we have a total credit outstanding. What good does that figure do me when I do not have a net equity figure to compare it to, as well as the total number of owned housing units? I could then get an average figure for net household asset for Canadians. That is the figure that is starting to have some tangible meaning of how well the average Canadian is doing.
Then we can start to talk about the bubble and what might happen should it burst, or maybe just deflate a little tiny bit … ;-)
Looks like housing markets in Toronto and Vancouver are still relatively hot.
BTW, who would we sell the houses to and where would we live? …. Ecuador, maybe?
That would do wonders for Canada!!!
“More than one million families have been forced to sell their home in just five years to meet the cost of paying for residential care, new figures have revealed.”
Kind of stupid, isn’t it?
There are people who need to go to a 24/7 residential care facility since they are virtually bed ridden or close to it.
There are just as many who are perfectly capable of doing daily chores themselves and just need someone to come in to help with some of the more physical strenuous work to clean house etc. or even help with some bookkeeping/bill payments, etc.
Many can still drive and get groceries, go to doctors, etc. although it might take a bit longer.
Everyone is an individual case, but I would think that the overall cost to society is kept lower if people stay in their own home for as long as they are able.
Any word on which hotel chain is going to anchor the new Bld down by the old RCMP . I believe there was going to be a announcement last mon , but I may have missed it .
Delta
Wow, people are waiting up till 3-4 am to post on the Friday free for all??? Night people , obviously. Others, like me, are sleeping.
And trying to post about local stuff, when we use this forum.
That gas leak, was interesting, yesterday. Seems, they didn’t keep track of the locations, way back, like they do now.
Have a great weekend folks. I’m off to Mont Tremblant for a quick getaway with some great dining, hiking in the cozy Laurentians and taking in the spectacular fall colours in this part of the world.
Oh and GO SENS!!!
Sine Nomine. Was there an official announcement that Delta would build the hotel. If so I must have missed it.
How many stories, and how many condo’s???
Tks.
I don’t feel offended by the term “sheeple” as I am not one of them.
Happy Friday, everyone!
The new walk-clinic in Superstore is very, very nice. It is very clean, large and everything a real medical clinic should be!!
I mean to say: the new walk-in-clinic
Sheeple… haha. Wrong crowd. You are not posting on a TMZ website.
Most people are like sheep. At least I refuse to let Hydro on my property to install a so called smart meter. I also try to by Canadian instead of from a 10 year old kid working in a sweat shop. Good for you People#1. The word is a Best Western going up in the gravel lot by CN Center also.
I’m not too concerned with being verbally herded into the flock of “sheeple”.
I don’t buy that comment as it doesn’t apply. It’s just a term.
What was with all the RCMP vehicles on North Nechako Road down by the brewery on Wednesday at around 5:00 PM?
Sheeple… haha. Wrong crowd. You are not posting on a TMZ website.
Free beer
How does someone get the RCMP to hang out on the corner of Upland and Ferry between the hours of 4 – 5:30 Monday to Friday?
If they are needing cash all they have to do is start giving out tickets to the “nice” drivers that stop on Ferry Ave. to allow drivers from Upland to sneek into the 3 mile line up.
Then they can ticket the Upland cars for running the stop sign. Would be a cash cow.
Almost rear ended one of those nice people. I don’t think ICBC would be understanding when the driver tries to explain why they stopped in the middle of the road when Ferry has the right of way.

If that is a Best Western, then the one downtown may be closing eventually.
Old cop shop unoccupied ….. adjacent Best Western purchasable …. great PAC location with two prime properties and a new hotel across the street.
Put a possible easing of money from the feds for funding the arts into the mix, an announcement of a City Centennial Project and one has the makings of the next great Civic project for the BC Capital of the North.
I believe there was a training exercise happenning by the brewery. Flood preperation… but haven’t heard much else.
Wonder how long city hall was going to keep quiet in regards to a councillor not keeping up with their property taxes?
It appears the city has known since September 12 of the situation since there was an “informal” meeting…..
Problem is he gets to remain on the committee…..
Not sure if this was clarified so…
It is a Delta Hotel being built downtown. Have spoken directly to one of the shareholders.
I rather doubt a motel would be built near the CN Center. I doubt the zoning would allow it.

I’m wondering if it was such a good idea put put a medical clinic in a place where lots of not-sick people go to buy their food?
opine wrote ” I rather doubt a motel would be built near the CN Center. I doubt the zoning would allow it.”
Since when does that stop this city. LOL
That’s funny – made my week LOL
“Since when does that stop this city. LOL”
I think they are about to get their wings clipped when a certain decision comes down in the near future.
I think the HomeLand Inn, the old Ranch Motel on Victoria should be Condemned. The place is a eye sore, what is wrong with the bylaw people ?? Build a NEW motel there.
I would like to thank the kind man who stopped and asked if I needed assistance on Monday. He helped my husband after I had suffered a medical emergency.I appreciate you help in my time of need. Thank You!!
I have to and can admit that I am one of many opinionated nobodies. Some one else will say what I’m about to say whilst having a name and credentials. The building and use of the Northern Gateway pipeline and the XL pipeline will be put on rush when unbeknownst to you when you wake up in the morning and turn your radio on only to find that Israel has attacked and bombed Iran. Just out of the blue. I have always known that the best defense is offence. If you knew your neighbour was stockpiling gasoline in his basement just waiting for an opportunity to burn your house down, would you go to the cops? In this case the UN? The “cops” would say he has a right to stockpile gas in his basement. “One more thing”, as Columbo would say, “don’t forget a tanker or two sunk in the straight of Hormuz during this kerfuffle would lessen oil deliveries to a lot of the world”. Ergo, prices of oil to rise. But like I said at the beginning of this rant, I will wait until some one more important than me repeats what I said. Carry on.
Does anyone know what is happening with the old legion building on 7th ave?

oldtrucker … nope … as with many things in the community, we seem to have a major lack of communication not only from city hall, but also private developers. It use to be that project signs went up or media releases were made that had some meaningful info in them, etc.
So ….. here is my compilation of some of them
1. O’Grady across from the entry to the Home Depot – a street is being put in where there was a right of way and a clearing leveled to the left of that new street with access to O’Grady .. I hear another medical clinic.
2. We were promised an announcement about the mixed use highrise on Brunswick this week … it is Friday and nothing yet … why? Delta was in from the start , then out, then in … maybe out again … and maybe condos or maybe not.
3. Same with the Legion building. A rezoning … for what project?
Anything else???
I like the sheeple cartoon ….
Automaton is a word used by Peter in his book the Peter Principle for someone who does things out of routine.
A interesting quotes from Laurence Peter
“Against logic there is no armor like ignorance.â
âThere are two kinds of failures: those who thought and never did, and those who did and never thoughtâ
âOriginality is the fine art of remembering what you hear but forgetting where you heard it.â
âTwo things reduce prejudice: education and laughter.â
Where is the most dangerous road in PG for pedestrians? My pick is Marleau and the frontage road from Marleau to Bon Voyage.
The road is heavily traveled by vehicles especially Marleau and the frontage road to Westgate as it is a designated connector to hwy 16 west out of the Whallies area. There are also two major subdivisions empting onto this frontage road. It is narrow, no sidewalks and in some places not even a shoulder to walk on. In the winter it gets even narrower because of piles of snow. Also dark as there are no street lights. Oh, the surface of these roads is a joke.
With these subdivisions, a school and bus stops there is heavy pedestrian traffic on the frontage road. What is sad but true is that most of the roads in these subdivisions themselves empting onto these pitiful roads have are wide, street lights and sidewalks.
Hello city hall, knock knock, anybody home.
Here is an interesting read about African countries pushing back against China. These countries going for a better deal.
âThis is all weâve got,â said Nigerâs oil minister, Foumakoye Gado. âIf our natural resources are given away, weâll never get out of this.â

Reported here that the Legion building will be the new home for Legion Medical.

Anyone else notice that the new Medical building on Vancouver street only has parking for staff?
Thursday Citizen -teacher’s firing causes public outcry – heard that the individual has been in the position at Ron Brent for 5 years – always deemed qualified . Bachelor’s degree – early childhood learning / masters – specila – needs learning will be laid off at end of the month.
Strange – where is the union? And doesn’t this district have many support staff( clerical / EAs/ custodial) unqualifed working and laid off in June?
Don’t make sense!!!
Holy cr*p gus, It took a while but I managed to read through your eight (8) posted comments responding to my one early morning comment.
Your debating tactic seems quite clear, I raise a point or issue and you bury it under a mountain of gus generated drivel. It takes a person with a tremendous amount of free time to do that.
I now await your ten (10) replies to this comment.
@graymare:
A municipality cannot implement a paid parking scheme without a dire parking situation. By usually (always) allowing developers to get a variance on the “required” number of parking spaces for a commercial development per city bylaws, the city gets to say that there are not enough parking spaces, so must charge a premium for any available spaces.
Of course that does not include the numerous police cars parked on the roadway, or city vehicles, or city staff vehicles.
When the mayor is friends with one of the few major commercial developers, and that developer has contributed significantly to the mayors election campaign, it is hard to say no and do the right thing.
Can you say “politician in my pocket”?
Speaking of parking and the City, the parking lot where the RCMP will soon be moving to, is not owned by the city. Its leased to the city. Also I hear that the parking lot behind the office building at 2nd & Victoria is also leased by the city.
With all the land the city owns, why do they need to lease parking lots ?
I guess that also begs the question, why did they put the RCMP Palace where they did ?
“why did they put the RCMP Palace where they did ?”
Money management and forward planning not exactly their strong suit. Right Ex Chair of Finance and Audit committee?

Mayor et al going to China. Rather than (or as well as)complain and comment on the mayor’s 2nd trip to China…. could we not all sit in the gallery at the next council meeting and express our concerns? Having all the seats full and perhaps a few brave souls going up to the mic and having this covered on the city’s web cam might put some humility into the situation.
I’ve also noticed that nobody said a word about council voting themselves a 31% raise and management staff receiving an 8% raise. By not saying a word I mean that again, people have the right to attend council meetings and bring these things up. Telling her its not ok with us; where are her priorities? Were these raises pointed out in the CORE review? Its great that we discuss things here, but the mayor has made it public that she will not read or have interviews with Opinion250.
Just wondering why I am unable to post on the article about Stolz plight and Green’s vacation? IMO folks posting we’re being much more kind and some even empathetic where Stolz is concerned…than either of them have to whole sectors of society, businesses and neighborhoods as well as their own work. I will. It apologize….Stolz, it is all well deserved. If he was an honest, hard working man that just did the best he could with what he has and demonstrated respect and empathy to others…well, he would get same in return. Note that is not the case. Hope it’s a day of reckoning sir.
Sitting in the gallery at a city council meeting and try to shoot yer mouth off about what irks you? Only in yer dreams, pal. First of all council has an “agenda”. If you’re not on it at that meeting, tough beans. If you open yer yap, the mayor will tell you to sit down and shut up because you “don’t have the floor”. It’s all in the Roberts Rules of Order book. As in, “all those in favour of abolishing the parliamentary system, say Aye. All those opposed…” See? That’s how it works. You are only important for the time it takes to make an X every three (soon to be 4) years. Feel better now?

To all the Truck Drivers including Pickups ,
please secure your Loads, dodging what falls
off or out of your Truck is no Fun!
I love it when two chip trucks are side by side on the bypass and they barely make it through the light leaving a long line of vehicles in their wake..then they run the lights as it turns red.. Class act guys.. Way to be professionals.
Haven’t heard from Mattyc in a while. I’m beginning to think that he/she has now disquised himself/herself as People#1!!
Opinion 250, that’s my opinion, haha!!
Hmm.. Hart Guy, let me get back to you on that a little later. *goes to fridge and uncorks the first of two bottles of wine* ;-)
Aren’t the boxes in all pickups mainly used as garbage cans that spread the owners crap all over our hwy’s and byways while driving to and from work etc?
Are the chip trucks doing the speed limit P Val?
Heyyy “”Hello ?” WHEN did these wage increase happen?? THX
Sorry dragonmaster, but my pickup box is not a garbage can. I,ve had to dodge the odd piece of wood falling off of a few logging trucks and clean the wood chips out of my rad flying off of the chip trucks.
Time to study for your political science midterm people#1. You clearly are a mindless basement dweller full of pomp and utopian ideals. Perhaps when you grow up you will see the world in a more realistic sense, but I doubt it.
Stillsmokin: To be very honest, I don’t recall what month, but it was earlier this year.

Great link – but I do not think, most of the sheelpe will wake up. Watch the shopping centers,it will happen soon, when they run around buying junk Made in China – all Xmas presents – and most are unwanted.
Most of the population has to learn and to think – do I really need it? Think for 2 or 3 days and if you still think, you need it, oh well, then buy it.
Regarding the firing of the teacher at Ron Brent for lack of an ECE certificate, I too wonder about this. Did they suddenly change the regulations and not grandfather existing teachers? And why is such a low-level certificate required of people with much higher-level qualifications? I also wonder why this teacher could not get the certificate without full-time course work in light of the provisions for counting both previous courses and practical experience toward the requirements.
Remember, the current phase is the “advertising phase” … make them think they need something because it is stylish … then give you chit ….
At least in Italy they can give you style …..
On the other hand, I am still wearing my baby clothes … they were expandable ….. smart designers … made from indestructible threads ….. ;-)
Hey, funny GUS
How about a Harris Tweed jacket, Made in Scottland, they say, it will last a lifetime – unless you like junk food and gain weight.
By the way, you always pay for quality, also shoes made in Italy- if that is the shyle you like – will cost you some dollars, but they last, they probl. won’t go into the landfill after a couple of month
