Another Dump of Snow on the Way
Prince George, B.C.- Another whack of snow expected in Prince George.
Superintendent of Operations, Bill Gaal says all available City equipment was out yesterday, last night, all available city and rented equipment was out on arterial roads and working the east-west arterials into the City bowl.
Today, every piece of equipment, will once again be out, and will continue until this snowfall has been cleaned up. Gaal says he doesn’t expect the plows will get into the residential neighbourhoods until Friday “And as Monday is red zone garbage pick up, Friday snow clearing will be in the red zone.”
Gaal says he expects crews will be working both Saturday and Sunday “The forecast is not looking good, with Environment Canada forecasting 7 days of this.”

But we are happy to report as we were driving by city hall yesterday, dragging the bottom of my car the whole way, the parking lot was plowed. Can’t have city hall shutdown, there are fees and taxes to collect!
well I was out and about yeterday on main throughafairs, never seen one grader or snowplow…NOT ONE or the tell tale signs of one having passed through
3 cheers to Bill Gaal…nice to live in the red zone…About 6 o’clock last night bottom of Peden Hill looked like a war zone…
I am not a fan of the snowplowing either, but with the huge dump of snow we just had I am also a realist. I don’t expect my road to be plowed until all the main arteries are done. The sooner the better of course :)
I would say that to-day a lot or people in the residential areas will not be able to get out to go to work. Things do not look good at all,. Furthermore if they don’t get some residential done stat, they wont get out Friday either.
This type of weather is what a Winter City is all about, and it appears that we are not prepared. Hopefully there will not be a medical, or fire issues.
I’m with bcracer – I was out and about in several areas yesterday and didn’t see evidence of plows anywhere. I took Foothills and 15th to work this morning, again no evidence that they were touched – they’re nothing but goat trails. I don’t expect my side street to get plowed anytime soon, but at least the main roads should have been done once.
Peden Hill is plowed by YRB. At least trash the right outfit.
What about Fridays garbage area, yellow?
On another note, it shouldn’t surprise me anymore, but no mention on any other news sites about the amount of snow we’re getting here. When Vancouver gets a dusting of snow it’s all I hear about, and here we’re getting buried and no mention anywhere I’ve seen other than a quick blurb yesterday on MSN stating we were under a snowfall warning.
Boudicca, I think we’re out of luck. No snow plowing for us until next week.
And of course they will start at the beginning again and miss the rest of us . In my area we have not seen a plow yet from the last snowfall , but other areas were clear . Now it is impossible to move on our street . Of course we will be put back at the end of the line yet again and they will go back to the beginning again after the next round of snow we are calling for . And while on my delivery route yesterday I saw the odd sand truck , no plow on the ground and not a bit of evidence the roads had been plowed .
Middle finger. I thought that as well but I saw a city grader plowing 97 right by the mall and clearing the 16 and 97 intersection. People were driving around making a nice mess of the graders work but that’s beside the point. So is yrb responsible for hwys outside of city limits or the whole way through. If that’s the case why were city graders wasting there time there?
zum14….a city grader plowing the 16 & 97 intersection. I’m puzzled. Goes against everything I’ve ever been told.
Welcome to living in a winter city. Your residential street probably won’t be plowed for a while yet, because they’re doing the main streets right now. Plus there’s the CUPE strike factor which will have an as yet unknown effect.
I see the professional whiners are out in force this morning. PG has hundreds of kilometers of road to clear. Think about how long it takes to drive that in weather like this, never mind clear it. Relax and make yourself some hot cocoa. It’s just snow, not the apocalypse.
Be optimistic!
Only nine days until winter!
So how do you all like driving your low slung econo boxes now.
Double thumbs down to the clown on Westgate who blows his snow onto the unplowed road.
Yo peegee, i drove to work at 5:30 thismorning. North nechako was done, foothills was done(not the outer edges) and then i got stuck behind 2 plow trucks side by side. I followed them from university light, down 15th, then they turned on central and all the way to hang a right past the mall! Maybe turn the wipers on in your honda civic
Yep, you knew where you lived when you were buying that Honda Civic.
Ummm actually I drive a truck because of where I live and work. As far as I’m concerned, they didn’t do a very good job or it was snowing that hard because at about 0630 this morning it was back to being pretty much a goat trail.
Ya, i plowed 5 neighbours’ driveways last night in nnc. The snow was just as deep this morning again! A lot of people are suddenly friendly now! Haha its all fun
Sine Nomine, truer words were never spoken.
We live in Canada and it snows. Prepare for it, and when it happens, don’t act like the rapture is happening.
Yesterday my wife saw a guy on 15th Ave. riding a bicycle, yes, ON the road, in the middle (I asked)
I would have to assume his life insurance is paid up, he has a will, except of course the will to live a long life.
metalman.
My beef is with the stupid people walking on the roads this morning.., thinking they have the god given right to walk on the tire tracks left behind and not even stepping aside for vehicles coming..
My wife laughed at me for putting the garbage can out this morning. Lo and behold, and right on time the city garbage truck, chained up came chugging up the street. Thumbs up to the driver.
Rights of way between vehicle and pedestrian
179 (1) Subject to section 180, the driver of a vehicle must yield the right of way to a pedestrian where traffic control signals are not in place or not in operation when the pedestrian is crossing the highway in a crosswalk and the pedestrian is on the half of the highway on which the vehicle is travelling, or is approaching so closely from the other half of the highway that he or she is in danger.
(2) A pedestrian must not leave a curb or other place of safety and walk or run into the path of a vehicle that is so close it is impracticable for the driver to yield the right of way.
(3) If a vehicle is slowing down or stopped at a crosswalk or at an intersection to permit a pedestrian to cross the highway, the driver of a vehicle approaching from the rear must not overtake and pass the vehicle that is slowing down or stopped.
(4) A pedestrian, cyclist or the driver of a motor vehicle must obey the instructions of an adult school crossing guard and of a school student acting as a member of a traffic patrol where the guards or students are
(a) provided under the School Act,
(b) authorized by the chief of police of the municipality as defined in section 36 (1), or
(c) if located on treaty lands, authorized by the chief of the police force responsible for policing the treaty lands.
Pedestrian walking along highway
182 (1) If there is a sidewalk that is reasonably passable on either or both sides of a highway, a pedestrian must not walk on a roadway.
(2) If there is no sidewalk, a pedestrian walking along or on a highway must walk only on the extreme left side of the roadway or the shoulder of the highway, facing traffic approaching from the opposite direction.
(3) A person must not be on a roadway to solicit a ride, employment or business from an occupant of a vehicle.
(4) Except for a person who solicits a ride in an emergency situation, a person who contravenes this section commits an offence.
I came across several pedestrians this morning. What’s the big deal? Slow down or stop and let them on their merry way.
Loki… what are you… a ByLaw offcer or what… these people were walking ON the road.. With the roads as they were, they should have let the driver follow the path of the last vehicle and stepped to the side so the car can pass. Pedestrians are not meant to be walking in middle of the road. With all the snow this morning, if a vehicle stopped, it would be difficult to get going again, even with snow tires on..
I understand they don’t want to walk in the snow, but please… step aside and let the car pass ..
OK – so red zone gets plowed because of garbage pickup on Monday – but aren’t city workers going on strike on Saturday? As far as I know, garbage pickup is not an essential service. Nice to get your roads plowed but no garbage picked up
The point is that public roads are for all, not just motor vehicles. In these conditions, it is not always possible to walk through the snow on a sidewalk. “The law” says to walk on the side of the road WHEN POSSIBLE. There is a contingency for wen it is not reasonably possible and that is to walk facing traffic.
So, get off your high horse. Some people cannot afford a motor vehicle of any type. some people cannot get a drivers license for legal, medical or situational reasons.
If you are at all concerned about those less fortunate, offer a ride to get them safely off the street and to their destination. If you are just concerned with your being inconvenienced, well then you are not very compassionate.
Have a nice day.
I pretty much dodged all sorts of vehicles and pedestrians to get to work today. No problem to me. If I get stuck, hopefully the pedestrians will help push!
Loki: “There is a contingency for wen it is not reasonably possible and that is to walk facing traffic. “
If pedestrians want to walk in the tire tracks facing traffic, I don’t have a problem with it, just hop out of the way when cars come by. You’re risking your life if you don’t.
I believe the spirit of that law is as you say, to get out of the way of oncoming traffic. Situational awareness is not a hallmark of many modern folk. So trying to be aware of traffic coming up behind you as you are walking along a road with winter hat or earmuffs make this difficult.
Yes, pedestrians are supposed to let vehicles passed by making room. Many seem to think they have priority.
Its Prince George in the Winter folks, stop your whining and moaning cuz your street isn’t cleaned down to a puting green! That said…Bill Gaal is a complete waste of a manager and how that Moron gets over a 100,000$ a year is beyond me!!
I work afternoon shift and tonight the highways were better than last night thanks to YRB.. (and I saw 3 trucks and plows out. Any city roads I hit were absolutely terrible. Thanks Green and her cronnies..Bet 4th ave in front of her business was plowed.
Candles anyone??????

I followed A drunk pedestrian this afternoon on Spruce street. I was going to a dentist apt. and this poor gal was having a hell of a time making her way down the road. Maybe if the sidewalks were cleared….she may have walked it instead of the street.
Loki… good point.. How bout you get out there and tell the people to be facing the traffic??? instead of walking with it.. Your getting to sound like you have the same mentality as these people.
I noticed yesterday the sidewalks were cleared and the roads were hell.. Go figure eh..
Meant the sidewalks in College Heights
