Prince George, BC – This holiday season marks the 10-year anniversary of holiday LED lights being sold in British Columbia…

The first time the lights were available for purchase in the province was back in 2003.  BC Hydro introduced the holiday LEDs the year before, by providing 20-thousand strings to more than 50 business improvement associations around the province.

Now, Hydro says 45-percent of its residential customers use at least one string of holiday LEDs.  However, the utility reports that, on average, those residents have six strings of indoor or outdoor lights in use.

With LED lights using up to 90-percent less electricity, BC Hydro is pointing out that switching over just three strands of incandescent lights could save $33 over two months, assuming the lights are left on for five hours a day.  According to Hydro, the holiday LEDs are also more durable and last 10-times longer than incandescents.
