NORAD Keeping Track of Santa
It is time, NORAD is once again tracking Santa's journey. The tracking actually started around 2 this morning and NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command) uses several methods of keeping track of Santa.
Radar, that is part of the North Warning System has 47 installations across Canada and ALasa. The radar is watched very closely for any sign of Santa leaving the North Pole. ONce it is confirmed he has left the North Pole, NORAD starts using satellite technology to keep track of his journey.
The satellites have infrared sensors which means they can see heat. NORAD says it can follow Santa through the infrared signatures because Rudolph's nose gives off a great deal of heat.
A third method, is the Santa Cams. They are turned on about an hour before Santa enters a country then turned off after an image of Santa is captured. Those images are immediately downloaded onto the NORAD website for everyone around the world to see.
Finally, the Jet fighters are used. Canadian NORAD fighter pilots take off out of Newfoundland and welcome Santa to NOrth AMerica. Then other Fighter pilots across the country escort Santa across Canada.
NORAD, and its predecessor the Continental AIr Defense Command (CONAD) have beentracking Santa since 1955.
But, as the little ones count down the time till Santa arrives, the tracking Santa site has plenty of activities to keep them busy . You can click here to access the site.
