Lending A Strong Back And Helping Shovel

Clearing walkways and stairs just one more way to help others in our community

Prince George, BC – The Prince George Council of Seniors is looking for help in digging out from our latest snowfall…

While the organization looks for city residents to volunteer some 'shovel time' to help its clients every year, General Manager, Lola-Dawn Fennell, says the recent large dumps have made the past two weeks difficult to get on top of, in terms of keeping walkways and driveways clear for seniors.

"It's not just a convenience," says Fennell,  "In some cases, it's medically imperative."  In some cases, seniors rely on outside help daily, with Meals on Wheels or home care nurses needing to have access to their residences.  In other instances, Fennel says the clients are needing to get out of their homes to attend medical appointments, like dialysis and cancer treatment.

Fennell is encouraging city residents to start in their own neighbourhood first, and be a good neighbour if they know an elderly familyl for someone with mobility issues lives nearby, "Please be a good neighbour and shovel them out.  Then, if you've got a little bit of extra time on your hands, give us a call at 250-564-5888 and we'll match you with someone needing assistance in your area."

The council is also delivering 190 Christmas hampers to seniors this morning.  Anyone able to help with deliveries is asked to drop by the Senior Resource Centre at 721 Victoria Street at 9:30am this morning.

Turn out at the PG Seniors office was great – lots of people there to help with deliveries – it was fun to ring the door bells and see the joy in people’s faces. Thanks for giving us an opportunity to participate!
