Moose Lake Crash Claims 3 Lives

Thursday, January 9, 2014 @ 12:17 PM

Valemount, B.C. – A crash that happened   around 3:45  yesterday afternoon claimed three lives when an east bound minivan  was struck by a west bound tractor trailer unit  near the Moose Lake overpass.

Witnesses say the minivan lost control while attempting to pass an east bound tractor trailer unit when it lost control and swerved into the oncoming lane. The minivan was then t-boned by the westbound Semi Tractor Trailer Unit.

An adult male and two children aged 3 and 6, were killed in the collision while an adult female and 3 year old child were seriously injured and transported to the Jasper Hospital. They have since been transported to the Edmonton Hospital where they remain in stable condition. The family was reportedly from Alberta.

The driver of the Semi truck was not injured in the collision.

A North District re-constructionist attended the scene and members are still actively investigating the matter to determine the exact cause of the collision and who was driving the minivan.

It always leaves a lump in my throat when I hear children are killed in MVA’s. This is a very tragic accident that (from the information above)sounds like may not have happened if a driver had more patience. Of course I just commenting on what it sounds like to me, not facts. No matter how you look at it, young lives are gone and other lives are ruined. I feel very bad for the truck driver as well as the deceased and their families. This will have a lasting affect on him I’m sure.

so very sad…I gree with Veated. Lives are lost and forever changed..

This is an extremely sad story. Condolences to the families involved

It is indeed tragic. Whenever I hear of a passing accident like this, I wonder whether the driver should not have been more conservative about passing, or whether the road should not have been doubled.

It’s become one long slow-motion horror show on our highways this winter. :-(

Rest in Peace to the dad and 2 littles ones who are gone, positive thoughts and wishes to the mother and young one who survived. Hope they both have a speed, and full recovery…

RIP

Very tragic…there have been too many lives lost in BC this winter.

On another note, how about some proofreading before posting – the first sentence makes no sense, and the first sentence in the second paragraph is also not right…

There, but for the grace of God, go I. So much in life depends on luck and timing. There was an accident on the Hart Highway this morning that could have been a lot worse if the truck that lost control hit another vehicle.

I am truly saddened for the surviving woman and child :(

1st my condolences to all the people involved and their families, that is so tragic.
For my 2 cents: I just noticed that the CBC has said “11 accidents with 8 fatalities” in the hwy 16 Prince George region. The RCMP are wondering why, and what makes this so different from other years….well here goes…NO budgets or RISK Management for snow plowing and removal…I just don’t know why that is,considering that the idiots that control snow removal and plowing are the same people that live in the area and Prince George is in the north. We do get winter it happens every year.

Sad but…. Story starts off the truck hit the van, to me implying blame that the truck driver was at falt. And if I rember right when this story first came out there was a lot of trick driver bashing. Yes I agree to menny trucks are not driving to road conditions, but so are cars. And in this case the car hit the truck, not as the as the ((miss))leading first line says.

Just too sad. I drive stormy slippery hwys more than most. I believe that the huge numbers of short wheel base vehicles and suv’s are a big part of a lot of wrecks. And very poor driving habits as well. I can’t believe how many articles about accidents clarify an suv, ford ranger or “small car” is mentioned. I personally see short wheel base crap in the ditches all winter long

This is so desperately sad. :( My most sincere condolences to the mother and child who survived. I’m not sure I’d want to.

I hate driving our highways in the winter, and will avoid it wherever possible. This year has been especially tragic. I don’t buy it that the weather has been strange. We have seen a lot of rain and snow, but our winters for the past decade or so have been like this. It’s not unusual.

Very sad and so preventable.

How about just driving to the conditions?

Yup, Gotta get around those trucks no matter what the cost.
I feel sorry fore the trucker who has to live with this now and for the mom and little one left behind as well as the little ones that perished.

It sounds like it was on a passing lane. I feel sorry for the mother and child.

Passing lanes….who’s the idiot or idiots that design these lanes ??? Why are most of them built on curves? Check out the last one east of Vamderhoof, its just a lonG ” s” curve . BUILD THEM ON A STRAIGHT PIECE OF ROADS YOU MORONS…

hdroadking makes a great point. Why would anyone put a passing lane on a hill when heavy traffic is going the slowest and people are the most impatient? It’s much easier to pass a truck when it’s speeding up down a straight stretch than when it’s crawling up a hill at 50km/h. lol!

I bet the reason they have curves on hill is because some dumb idea like it keeps the grade to a minimum slope while cutting back on the need to cut into hill sides. I mean look at all those straight cut mountain passes, no curves at all… Right?

The driver of the Semi truck was not injured in the collision,,,in my opinion it should probably read the driver of the Semi truck was not physicaly injured.

Passing lane or not, you don’t pass when it’s not safe.

Thanks Spock. It had to be said. The right amount of sarcasm and no ALLCAPS.
