Snowload, Coupled With Rain, Could Cause Trouble

Sunday, January 12, 2014 @ 4:45 PM

Prince George, BC – While rural residents living to the north of Prince George see considerable more snow than those living within city limits, the recent spate of snowstorms coupled with rain in the forecast overnight could spell trouble.

The Chair of the Bear Lake Community Commission had not yet heard of Polar's decision to cancel the evening shift due to structural concerns caused by the snow, but Sharon Waldner says there is a lot of it blanketing the community.

"We've probably got five feet of snow – we have a four-foot fence and it's buried and the neighbour has a foot higher than us and it's sitting at the top of it.  And the people who haven't shoveled their roof have a lot of snow sitting up there."

Waldner has lived at Bear Lake for 40-years and says while there was definitely more snow back in the 70s when they used to have to shovel out the windows of their home, she says the snow arrived late this year and in large dumps.

"A lot of people have tin roofs, so it slides," she says.  "But we have shingles, so my husband shovels it all the time, so it's not a big load sitting there."

One long-time cabin owner at Summit Lake says there is almost two-metres of snow on the roof.  She says the snow usually slides off the angled roof of their garage, but this year, it's hit the ground and is backing up onto the structure.

We have never had to deal with rain on snow in January before. Lots of snow couple by lots of rain equals lots of weight…be careful people this is a dangerous combo we have never come across before

X-it: Are you being funny? Ha, ha.

Poor planning.

Funny would be your roof sitting in your living room

+2 degrees celsius tonight and rain, +5 degrees celsius tomorrow, hmm… not a typical winter now is it!

I agree with X-it, watch out for structural collapse of some roofs and carports, and again, watch for more tragic accidents on our area highways :-(

In the city, there has not been enough snow left on the roof yet, nor enough rain to cause any residential roofs to collapse unless they are carports that are on the north side of a building are lower than the adjacent roof and do not have trusses spaced closer to together adjacent to the house.

There is much more concern for houses which suffer from potential ice dams and the water damage that can result from that.

X-it; “We have never had to deal with rain on snow in January before.” I think this is what Givemore is refering to. Been here a long time & a January thaw of some sort including rain is pretty typical.

So people how long have you lived in these parts? I have been here over 30 years and have seen this before. You really should check facts before typing. Just where do you get the idea January should be cold all the time?

People#1 you’re so painfull. Global warming is global!

I guess the people out east could claim global freezing ha ha ha

It’s only global warming in the Northern hemisphere. In the South it’s global cooling. Climate change has been happening ever since the beginning of the planet. We aren’t responsible for it and we can’t change it. Just give the City more money and shut up.

I too have seen this weather before and this is my 43rd year in PG. Why give a warning about the roads?? The city hasn’t done anything to them so far?? OH yeah — once!

I hope the city cleans the drains so I dont have to float to work… Oh wait,,,,city,,,clean /work….whoops

People that all you can come up with, hilarious. You are a denier that climate changes.

Hey, we haven’t posted about climate change or global warming, or global cooling for a long time ……

So, anything new?

Sort of like City snow removal change

….. is there more snow left on the ground by the City now than there was 40 years ago?

……. Is it taking longer now to clear the streets of snow than it took 40 years ago?

……. What is the trend line?????

……. by 2030 we will no longer have to clear the snow because there will no longer be snow in the winter due to local warming ….. ;-)

Here’s something for you to chew on. The great carbon tax swindle.

3 feet of snow at the Hartic, the down pour that was expected did not come..good thing. Of coarse it is warming, maybe it might even warm up enough to get our redwood forest back that used to grow at the north pole.

Will Shari now has reason to instigate a January warm weather tax to go along with the rain water tax.

“In recent decades, Prince George has become ‘less cold’ and a greater percentage of precipitation has fallen as rain rather than snow. These climate trends are consistent with streamflow trends at several locations where flow increased (decreased) in winter (summer).”

“Annual temperatures in the region are projected to increase an average of 1.6°C to 2.5°C by the middle of the 21st century. Precipitation is projected to increase by 3% to 10% primarily in winter with possible decreases in summer. The magnitude of projected temperature change is likely to result in serious impacts as they are above the historical range in variability for this region, and will create conditions that have not occurred historically. Changes to streamflow timing and amount will depend on watershed location and type.”

Your argument is not with me, it is with science. Harper knows science supports global warming, there is scientific evidence that confirms AGW exists.

Global warming is caused by increased carbon emissions in our atmosphere to due the burning of fossil fuels, yet Harper continues to back the Big Oil & Gas industry. Harper doesn’t care about our climate or our environment… this is why he has muzzled, and fired so many world renown, scientists in Canada.

Watch this CBC investigative report;

You use CBC and a carbon tax gathering province as your scientific sources, wow. are you sure they have no bias.

Peaple go over to Dr. Judith Curries site, a very respected climate scientist by the way, and do some reading.

Her name is Judith Curry, and her claims are half-baked;

http://www.skepticalscience.com/Judith_Curry_arg.htm

Anthropogenic Global Warming (AGW) is supported by hundreds of credible, and internationally recognized, “institutions”. Yet global warming deniers are only able to name, and refer to, a feeble 3% of the world’s science climatologists that deny AGM exists. Judith Curry is among that feeble 3%. I follow the other 97% of the world’s climate scientists that know AGW is real, and is already impacting the earth’s climate!
