Search and Rescue Pulls 4 Snowmobilers to Safety

Tuesday, January 14, 2014 @ 10:31 AM

Valemount, B.C. – Four snowmobilers are safe and sound   after being rescued  by  Robson Valley Search and Rescue in two separate incidents.

A Prince George man, and one  from Calgary  were reported overdue to Valemount RCMP  Sunday evening  when they  failed to return to their vehicles that were parked at Allan Creek on  Sunday.

Other snowmobilers coming off the mountain advised they had spotted the two 33 year old men  in a gully and  confirmed it was too steep  and dark to get out of that  area.  The  two men were well equipped with food and communication devices and  notified officials they were  digging in for the night.

On Monday,  Robson Valley Search and Rescue,  with the help of a helicopter,  located the two.  Neither was injured,  and each was  connected to a long line cable and pulled from the gully. They were then transported to a nearby cabin and then flown by chopper to the Allan Creek parking lot  where they retrieved their vehicles.

Also on  Sunday,  McBride RCMP were advised that two males from Spruce Grove Alberta were overdue from snowmobiling on Lucille Mountain.

The 19 and 20 year old males were scheduled to meet friends at the base parking lot for 3:00 pm, but failed to show. McBride RCMP were contacted and activated the Robson Valley Search and Rescue team who believed the males may have traveled down into the Dore River area which is known to be a difficult area to get out of.

Robson Valley Search and Rescue attempted to look for the males that night, but due to the darkness and heavy snowfall were unable to continue. At first light the team, with the assistance of a helicopter, flew to the area and visually located the men, but were unable to land near them due to steep terrain. The SAR crew landed safely on a ridge.  Packing extra snow shoes,  they descended into the bowl and retrieved the snowmobilers. Once everyone had been able to snow shoe out,  they were flown back to their vehicles without incident. Neither male was injured.

What about their sleds?

Sleds will come out via chopper at their own expense.

More bullet proof Albertans??

The insulation in there sled seats will make a nice nest for the squirrels.

If they headed down the Dore side off Lucille in this snow then I am not suprised they got stranded. Thats a steep enough valley in spring conditions. Glad to hear there was a happy ending.
