PG’s Connection To The Games: Megan Heinicke

Saturday, February 8, 2014 @ 2:35 PM

Prince George, BC – Prince George residents will have a reason to get up early tomorrow, as Canadian biathlete, Megan Heinicke, competes in the first of five events at the Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Heincike might be more familiar to local residents as Megan Tandy (shown in 250News file photo at right)…

The 25-year-old grew up and began her training in Prince George, moving to Squamish to train with the BC High Performance Team about a year before the 2010 Olympics.  She had a strong performance at her first Games, finishing as the top Canadian woman in biathlon.  Following Vancouver-Whistler, the athlete married coach, iLmar Heinicke, and had a son in late 2010.

Heinicke seems poised for another strong performance at the Sochi Games.  She recently wracked up personal bests – finishing 30th in the 15km Individual Race at a World Cup Event in Germany, 7th at an IBU Cup Race in Italy in the Sprint, and a 4th place in the Women's Relay in France in December.

Tomorrow, Heinicke races in the 7.5km Sprint, which begins at 6:30am our time (PST).
