North Cariboo Voters Included In Arena Discussion

Prince George, B.C. – The Cariboo Regional District and City of Quesnel are going back to the taxpayers to gather input on the possibility of building a new arena in Quesnel.

You’ll recall that last November voters turned thumbs down on borrowing up to $15 million for a new multi centre and that project died.  Then in January a phone survey was conducted to ask residents about their satisfaction with current parks and recreation facilities and their priorities for those areas in the future.  The survey showed more than 50% of respondents think Arena 1 should be replaced and the swimming pool and Arts and Rec Centre renovated.

Quesnel City Council and the CRD’s North Cariboo Directors now want public input on construction of a new arena on the site of the present one.  It’s predicted the 1200 to 1600 seat arena would cost between $14.3 and $16.8 million.  Current available funding is listed as $9.9 million, if all grants, donations and reserve funds go into the pot.

Two open, public meetings are being held, one March 5th at the Bouchie Lake Community Hall, the other March 25th in Quesnel Council Chambers.  As well, five stakeholder meetings are being set up involving arena users, arts, business, industry and seniors.

With hard times, and mills closing, do we really need to get the City of Quesnel into more debt? I don’t think so. It’s just someone trying to get more points on their resume before the next election. We can’t afford it period!!!

Quesnel does need a new arena. It is good for the community. Maybe some of the larger employers should step up and invest in their community.
