Prince George, B.C.- Liquor sales in  grocery stores could  come as early as 2015.

The Provincial Government has announced a “2 part model” for the sales.

1.       Store within a store:  will apply to private liquor  license that are either transferred into , or sold to a grocery store, as wll as  government liquor license that are transferred into grocery stores.  There will be separate cshiers and  sales  will include, beer, wine and spirits.

2.       VQA licenses:   Under this model VQA wine will be allowed to be sold off designated shelves within the store, and  purchased at designated check outs.

The Province says it is still refining the system including a clear definition of “grocery store”.  Convenience stores will not be included in the definition, and the moratorium on the number of private liquor stores remains in place.

From the family first government that brought us community casino’s.

@Eagleone: What does liquor in stores have anything to do with Family First? My parents were casual drinkers my whole life growing up, doesn’t make them or me alcoholics. I think you are just associating the negative connotations of alcohol.

Any lifestyle that includes alcohol, smoking pot, smoking cigarettes, dancing, buying quick pick tickets … add your other favourite vice(s) …. is anti family …. I thought that was a given… :-)

Any lifestyle that includes soda pop, fries, donuts, hunting, high marking, facebook, texting, …. add your other favourite time consuming and fattening activities … is pro-family.

;-)

One stop shopping at costcos

It’s just a convenience. Pricing will still be tightly controlled by the government.

I just don’t get the economics of this.

Would it not be a significant net benefit to the Province to go back to the old system whereby ALL profits from the sale of liquor accrue back to the Province to fund programs and services?

Surely it’s not rocket science to conclude that 100% of the profit is far better than the cut they would receive from income tax on the profit?

Would people really rather pay more income tax or have reduced services, just so they can pickup a bottle of wine at Save On Foods instead of the BC Government outlet at Pine Centre?

That’s good. Booze going through special check outs means the lines for people who don’t need to buy booze will be quite short. Lines for booze will be busier than a Saturday at Costco. I’ll be in and out in minutes.

Just in time for the Christmas season!

Non union beer handlers at Costco? Unbelievable and incomprehensible. Union beer trucks at the local Costco loading dock? Hmmmm. Should work.

Maybe Costco will sell Craft Beer, not the swill spewed out by Labbatts & Molson.

Ya like unions and nonunion have worked to gether before. ?..moron comment

Separate check puts is the stupidest thing I have ever heard of. They obviously still cannot get out of the controlled substance mindset.

BTW, the state of Washington switched from their “package” stores to total privatization …. $4.00 for a bottle of bubbly at a drug store at Xmas …. $70 for a bottle of special reserve Willamette Valley wine at a grocery store …

Young kids get ID’d at the counter as they do when they buy tobacco or scratch and win tickets…..

On top of that, the customer in front of you might be carrying an open sidearm for which she does not require a permit …..

The entire thing is so stupid it is unbelievable!

Meanwhile, in Ontario they still can’t get it into their heads that you really do not have to go to two different stores to pick up some scotch and some beer for the party that night.

Absolute stupidity ….. customs …. and no one remembers why they were created in the first place….. it has simply become customary …. :-(

“Meanwhile, in Ontario they still can’t get it into their heads that you really do not have to go to two different stores to pick up some scotch and some beer for the party that night”

I shook my head the first time I went into “The Beer Store” looking for Apple Cider. Nowhere to be seen. Just like the sign said, all beer, the whole beer and nothing but the beer, LOL. I get that they would focus on beer, but nothing else? Not even coolers?

So I just went to the local LCBO outlet and grabbed it along with some other stuff.

Hey,,,If you live in College Heights or the Hart Hiway.. from the grocery store to the liquor store is about 500 ft away. What is the difference whether they sell it in the grocery store or not. I just hope this affects a certain monopoly of cold beer and wine stores in this town.

Your right willyj, this could stop the spread of Shooters.

Oh, Washington state got more money in taxes when they went private and had no distribution and marketing costs. So, with the price structure they put in, it worked for them in the first year. Second year info just about to come in.

I found the selection to be overwhelming. It was very difficult to comparison shop. The license fees turned out to be too high in many cases compared to the amount of sales and the “loss” of shelf space in existing stores.

It looks like there as several small retailers that may be closing shop on their alcohol retail.

The whole initiative in Washington state was prepared and lobbied by Costco. There are more people from Canada at Costco buying milk than liquor. I doubt it made a big difference for anyone.

The only people who may benefit from this is that like bottles of pop, milk, orange juice, etc, it was like moving from the dark ages into a full convenience service for shoppers.

If they sold beer at Princess Auto, you’d never have to go anywhere else…
