Work Continues on Flooded City Intersections
Prince George, B.C. – The rapid snow melt in Prince George this weekend has resulted in the significant build-up of water at some intersections.
The corner of 4th and Winnipeg (pictured above) is one such intersection. City workers were there this morning employing the use of a locator to pinpoint the catch basin and a portable steamer to blast the ice and/or debris blocking drainage in that area.
The City had plenty of information about a rise in temperatures this weekend and made plans to have crews work overtime to deal with high water issues on city streets. And, while we have not received information from the City about all of the problem areas around town, we have been told that there are 14 to 16 people working to free up catch basins today.

They definitely have a priority system in place for determining which drains get cleared out and when, and I am very appreciative of it. We had a lake in front of our house yesterday but it wasn’t quite flood-threatening yet (unfortunately we have a flat driveway… so it was getting close) so I called and expressed my concern. Nothing happened… Today I called and told them if it goes another day, our garage will be full of water. Within 20 minutes our drain was clear and the lake was gone.
They are clearing drains based on relative risks. Yours may not be cleared yet because someone somewhere else in town may be ankle deep in water inside their home. If your house is not at risk of flooding, have patience. They seem to be doing what they can and for once I’m thankful for the city workers! Keep up the good work!
My culdesac was flooding bad to the point it was going to start entering my garage ( new neighbour didn’t realize he needs to keep drain open, he does now) I called they city at 8:30 am today and they showed up with in 45 minutes and cleared the drain, thanks so much for the swift action :)
Why would you not use Google earth to locate the drain. You get down to street view you can see them.
They do use google and that funky yellow thing in his hand called a metal detector!
Yep, he used a metal detector and google maps only work if you can see the curbs etc, kind of hard when completely covered in water ..lol
Glad this “run off” is not taxable.
Harbinger…Shhhhh…Don’t give them ideas. Let’s see, if the water originates from a city street, overflows onto your property…voila…Excess City Water Storage Fee @ $100/M3 ;)
Most of this problem is due to improper snow removal operations.
The ice that formed back in December and was never removed from the gutters by streets operations now becomes an extra expense for utilities operations, which as you know is managed by…Mr. Gaal.
Was that in the report?
P Val: Your neighbour didn’t know but you did and did nothing about it??
