ICBC Contributes Money For Sidewalk Around New Police Building?
If there is an argument to be made that ICBC is somehow improving safety on our area highways by contributing money for the construction of new sidewalks and new LED street lighting around the new police station , I for one would like to hear it. I suspect the rest of the people in the city and in particular those who buy ICBC insurance would also like to hear the explanation.
ICBC has announced that they ponied up 15 k for the sidewalk and lighting. How in the world that improves road safety might be in question, just as the City claims that the new RCMP police building has a total cost of $38.5 million.
Now how does ICBC argue that a sidewalk and lighting will somehow save the "motoring public" from what? If someone trips and falls on the sidewalk because of improper construction,it's the City's insurance that will pay. ICBC in case they have forgotten, insure vehicles. The police station was built by the City . Will the City now be able to say that part of the building and surroundings were paid for by ICBC?
If ICBC wants to contribute money to the City , and we welcome those contributions, stick with the roads, street lights and areas where by contributing to the cost they are able to save money for ICBC, and ultimately the customers.
Putting up some lights and building a sidewalk is anything but.
I'm Meisner and that's one man's' opinion.

Guess the budget was way over run and needs all the help they can get. What a joke and huge waste of money.
Maybe they are considering the better lighting will enable motorists to see pedestrians will undoubtably step out in front of them from the sidewalk?
By the way I hope they make it a LEVEL sidewalk.
ICBC likely donated the money to improve pedestrian safety, since they are usually involved when pedestrians are struck by vehicles.
ICBC should stick to the basics of insurance and get out of the PR business.
The Police Station is a majestic **bust**
ICBC should be shut down.
You got it right Pal. Every year my insurance goes up. Appears its to improve road conditions. Is that now part of their mandate.
Cheers

There have been some wicked pedestrian / mvi’s along that particular stretch of Victoria St in the past. Maybe its some kind of effort to reduce instances……who knows?
Maybe the folks in power find ways to spend and waste our money in various ways just to make us shake our heads in amazement and disbelief hoping that our brains will turn more mushy than they are now.
it is still a public source of money, meaning yours and mine.
So they screwed the pooch on this building and they are sneaking in addition revenue sources under a different banner.
ICBC has no business being involved in this.
ICBC, like any other insurance outfit needs to focus on their core activities of collecting premiums and denying claims.
I think the many functions ICBC is involved in should be thoroughly reviewed as to its/their appropriate fit into the insurance folder.
Over the past couple of decades, Government has shoved many vehicle administration functions onto ICBC (not necessarily by the Libs, peeps).
Yes, our rates increase yearly – because it is a government agency(?) – the privates also take in big premiums – so the grass may not be greener on the other side (on this issue).
I agree with Loki’s last two points.
Yup last thing we need is someone tripping on the side walk in the dark, whilst on there way to Castle Grey Skull’s “cells” for their required weekend incarceration.
