Road Rehab Projects Announced

Friday, April 4, 2014 @ 10:31 AM

Prince George, B.C.-  The list of  Prince George roads that will undergo rehabilitation has  finally been released.

There are 29 projects listed,  and the  budget is  $9.8 million, making this  the biggest road rehab budget in the City ever.

Here are the roads that will  be  resurfaced:

The numbers correspond to the map at the top of the story.

It is possible there could be a few additions to the list if all goes well and  projects are completed under budget.

It is expected the  work will start in May, once the asphalt plants are up and running, and  will  be completed in October.

Good catchup year for th city. Hopefully the same funding come for years to keep te momentum flowng.

How many if the contracts include warranty work for pot holes?

Our Road Rehab utility tax is approx. $5 Million per year.

The surplus money $4.8 Million comes from the Federal Government Gas Tax Fund. Which is given to Municipalities on a per capita basis. Prince George’s portion amounts to approx. $2,911,000.00 per year.

This money has been available since 2005 for various projects, and a lot of this money was spent on the Community Energy System in Prince George.

It seems that the City of Prince George only became aware that they could use this money for road rehab in 2013, even though other Cities were aware of if at least since 2010.

So it appears they are spending 2013 and 2014 Gas Tax Fund money on road rehab this year.

The Federal Government has advised that this Gas Tax Money will be available for the next 10 years and beyond and be pegged to inflation.

Problem is, they have also changed the criteria as to what the money can be spent on, and have now included culture and sports projects. So, look out in the next few years as the City may try and grab some of this money for a PAC.

This money can also be spent on water, sewer, storm sewer etc;, so one has to wonder why the City is bringing in a Storm Water Utility tax in 2016 when they could use some of the Gas Tax money to look after storm Water.???

Keep your eye on the Gas Tax Fund, because Cities are also allowed to borrow money against future payments.

PS. Regardless of where the money is coming from its good to see that we are going to get some paving done. Dirt roads in the outlying areas will also be upgraded using this Federal Money.

**It certainly helps being an election year**

Seems like most of the roads lead to one of the 2015 winter games venues…
or am I missing something?

If you look at #22, that is a sanitary projet so money going towars sewer at least.

Infrastructure spending good value for tax dollars its about time the light came ,old trick pavement gets votes don’t forget my drive way :)

Chief Lake Road to Sparrow road … finally!

Now we don’t have to dodge potholes that swallow up your car – while having to deal with approaching logging trucks. Hopefully this one gets done in early summer.

Nothing for Marleau and the frontage road to Bon Voyage. Multiple subdivions empty onto this trail not to mention pedestrians and traffic out of whallies area heading west. For traffic volume I rate it possibly the worst road in PG.

I see #6 up to the Elkcentre and #9 &#10 out to Otway.. thats ‘most’ of that list to you?

#22 is a sanitary project 100% funded by the home owners. So the city gets off on their regular maintenance cost they should have had to pony up for anyways, as that road is due for its 40-year rehab as is.

The $2.5 million projected open ended cost for the sewer, and road paving after, is once again 100% paid for by only those home owners, and not the city as a whole… its a first in PG.

I wouldn’t get to excited about chief lake road being done. It was postponed last year so a developer can put in a water or sewer line. I don’t think this has been done yet.

Both the Otway and N. Nechako sections should include paved shoulders to allow for bike and jogger traffic. The city paved a portion of Otway last year and didn’t pave shoulders. There is a lot of bike traffic on both these roads in the summer and Otway is part of the running portion of the PG Iceman event.

Kinda surprised no ones mentioned this. Keyword ” resurfaced” that literally means grind the top two inches up. Fill any potholes with whatever they can mush up and slap some recycled back down. Long story short – nothing actually fixed, 9.8mil down the poop shoot.
