Teachers Set for Job Action Next Week

Thursday, April 17, 2014 @ 3:06 PM

Prince George, B.C.- The BC Teachers Federation has served notice  it will  start “low level Stage 1 job action” on Wednesday April 23rd. in an effort to back their contract demands

While the BCTF  says  the action  will target administration and students will not be impacted,   School District 57 Superintendent Brian Pepper advises parents, that they “should not expect it will be ‘business as usual’.”

“Principals, and other administrative staff will be performing some of the duties withdrawn by teachers and will be less available than usual” says Pepper.

He will be posting updates on the School District 57 website, which can be easily accessed, here

Hooray.

Poor kids; pawns again in this game.

Axman tell us more.

I think that the Provincial Governments’ highhanded manner of negotiation is as likely to make pawns of our children as any job action by the teachers.
We must try to evolve in our labour-union vs. employer acrimonious squabbling, move away from where one side demands the moon on a silver platter, while the other offers next to nothing, and then they usually, eventually, meet in the middle anyway.
Is this process getting worse?
And why does it always seem to come down to the wire before negotiations begin in earnest?
metalman.

Let’s pretend the Fiberals ram through a back-to-work legislation and the teachers tell them to get stuffed. Then what? Take them to court? That’s laughable. The teachers could play the appeal game forever just like the Gov’t does.

It’s a pretty simple analogy. Teachers on one side making their demands; government on the other side making their demands and neither side giving a rat’s ass about the kids who are stuck in the middle.

I believe that the teachers care more about kids than the govt.
As for the public, I just took a walk around a school field the other day . If the amount of dog crap left on the kids’ playground is any indication, the general public sure doesn’t care.

Ya the bctf is known far and wide for their reasonable demands at the contract table and their willingness to compromise in order to reach a contract that is fair to both sides irregardless of the party in power.

Hopefully they will pick up the doggie doo and any drug paraphernalia they find as they walk the line…seeing how the children are their #1 concern.

Let’s see those bitching adout the teachers tell me this how would you deal with a classroom of kids and some special needs thrown in for good measure.

Personally, I wouldn’t become a teacher.

I also think it was a bad idea to try to integrate the “special needs” kids into regular classrooms. But, we’re all equal aren’t we? and you know what? Giving more money and more benefits to the teachers isn’t going to solve anything.

Nice that this announcement came out today as our teachers begin the 4 day Easter weekend!

They really do need this 4 day break. After all, it’s been a long time since they had a break!

What’s that you say, they just finished a two week spring break a couple of weeks ago??

Last Friday was a day off as well, Hart Guy.

There was also a pro-d since the spring break ended.
Anyone have a list of their demands this go around?

The exact same thing can be said about govt. Give it a rest!

Just saw the bctf logo on the news- has a big Aladdin’s lamp in the center. That explains why they are expecting a genie to pop out and grant them their every wish and whim.

http://www.bctf.ca/

You cry babies should get together for a hug and get over yourselves.

“Citing a lack of meaningful progress at the bargaining table, B.C. Teachers’ Federation president Jim Iker has announced his union is issuing 72 hours strike notice, but that job action will be confined to a teacher withdrawal of administrative service.

Iker says the job action will begin Wednesday April 23 and could escalate to rotating strikes unless the government comes “prepared to negotiate.”

“Our patience is running out,” he told reporters at a news conference in Vancouver.”

So, Jim Iker, Pinhead of the BCTF, exactly what are your demands this time around?

Losing patience? That’s an interesting statement considering that “Education Minister Peter Fassbender says there has been virtually no movement by the BCTF at the bargaining table.

“It’s a little disappointing but not at all surprising,” he said. Over the past few weeks, it appears the BCTF has been more focused on implementing its strike plan than bargaining at the table.”

Round and round and round we go!

I would suggest that the teachers get out on strike and quit fooling around. This government will talk until they are blue in the face and another year will go by and teachers will be another year behind without any increase in wages which is what they want. Stay out until it is settled. The students will survive. They have no problem extending the spring break to two weeks so what is another week or so.
If teachers are legislated back to work – just ignore it – that is what the Liberal government has done with two previous supreme court rulings.

The government has not ignored rulings as the matter is still before the court. The appeal process is a legitimate and vital part of the court system. The last justice stated there were serious flaws in the lower court judges ruling and granted the motion to appeal.Case will most likely head to SCOC for final ruling.

It’s not all about money and benifits. I am always amazed how the uni escapes criticism about pay and benifits seeing the undergrades do most of the work.

So if they legislated back to work appeal it and stay out until the appeal gets through the court.Don’t think it would take to long.

If they are deemed to be an essential service and legislation is properly passed there would be no grounds to launch an appeal.
One negotiated settlement in something like 30 years with governments of all stripes speaks volumes as to which side is to blame for lack of progress in talks. The spoiled brats in the classroom are not the ones looking at a blackboard when sitting at their desk.

You have lost me here.

I like Chief Sharleen Gail-she knows how to take care of government reps.maybe the teachers could contact her.

Ewitt, that is not Aladdin’s Lamp in the BCTF logo, it is called the “lamp of knowledge”. That lamp symbolizes learning and knowledge!

Not that any of you, who are against the teachers, would ever hope to know such a fact.

However, for coming in a distant second, I hereby present to you the “popsicle stick” of ignorance.

Peeps….The arab tale of Aladdin is hundreds of years older than the bctf. So I guess when it was time for them to choose a logo they used a skill learned in college when they partied a bit much and the assignment was overdue…..plagiarism. Good thing that it was not Moby Dick sitting on the logo designer’s desk or it might have been the big …. of knowledge.

Whale?
metalman.

haha metalman! Nope, it’s not whale! I think the correct answer sounds a bit like the outgoing leader of the NDP!

Just bring in temporary foreign workers to teach your kids.

Then we can run the schools 24/7 365 days a year!

It would appear that the teachers would have lots of time to negotiate between June 30 and Aug 29,and no students would be affected, just an observation.

When the dippers were ruling there was no peace between the teachers’ union and the government either! “Fiberals” or dippers – same difference.

Right on PrinceGeorge. The teachers have a long and storied history of fighting with the government. This goes back at least 30 years. Trying to pin this on the Liberals is laughable.

Keep in mind that Chrispie Clark said it’s about jobs and family now what was she smoking I ask you ?

I am quitting teaching in BC as I have just received confirmation of a better job in Sweden.

I am quitting teaching in BC as I have just received confirmation of a better job in Sweden.

taxpayerteacher, don’t let the door hit you on the a$$ on your way out!!

Our universities keep churning out new teachers, so we shouldn’t have problem filling your position!

Screw the BCTF. Same crap, different decade.

You get what you pay for…..and if one has a few math degrees and is fluent in some foreign languages required for translation abilities….. one doesn’t have to take insults from some exremely ignorant people like you Hart Guy!!! There is a reason why PG is listed at rock bottom for places to live in Canada……

It just amazes me after all the screw ups and lies that the BC Libs have told us people still vote for them. It’s time for people to get more open minded and vote for anything but the BC Libs. The local politicians that we have now have never had a strong voice for this area. To them there is no hope after HOPE!! All monies seems to be going down south – just look at the highway system – PG to Prince Rupert.

Often, when there are only two parties to choose from people will vote for one party (holding their nose) just to keep the other one from getting in!

Staying home on election day is not an option for those people.

Just saying, but being pretty sure all the same that it hits the nail on the head.
