Fire Crews Called To North Kelly Blaze
Prince George, B.C. – Fire crews from the area are in the process of fighting a fire on the Hart this afternoon.
During the noon hour an alarm dispatched firefighters to a structure fire at 12470 North Kelly Road.
Crews from the Beaverly, Salmon Valley, Ness Lake and Pilot Mountain Volunteer Fire Departments were dispatched to the scene.
First responders reported power lines down in the vicinity of the blaze. However B.C. Hydro is reporting no outages in the Prince George area at this time. The RCMP is conducting traffic control in that area.
Word from the scene is that nobody was at home at the time the fire broke out. They had gone out to Easter festivities and were advised by a friend that their house was on fire. The were no pets in the home and there have been no injuries reported.

okay so crews from “Beaverly” were dispatched. What the? So they came all got called in, got on the equipment drove all the way across the city to help fight a fire on the other side of the city. Where the heck was the PG Fire Department? Why don’t they respond from the hall that is in fact located in the bloody Hart?
Mitch2 the reason why the city did. It respond is simple it is outside the city limits and they are forbidden by insurance and laws in fighting fires outside their catchment area hence the reason the volunteer fire departments were called.
So “Beaverly” can be dispatched from across town to fight fires. what about Beaverlyes insurance, I think the people of Beaverly should be phoning the RDFFG with a few questions
Along with any other volunteer fire department that left there area.
The volunteer departments won’t respond to other areas without having a crew left to man the hall. So Bill, please check the standard operating procedures of your local volunteer fire department before you start running your mouth.
Running your mouth off ,,, hmm somerled , say there where 16 on call volunteer fire man at a station. A call came in and 8 people answered that call. the others could nt because they where no where near or unable to attend for some other reason, The crew is gone now and twenty minutes later a call comes in for their district, how many come and in for that call and what period of time does it take for them to get to my house back in beaverly??? answer please . a beaverly fire department at north Kelly for one house when the city has one close by , hey don’t get me wrong , volunteer firefighters are a god send but running his mouth off ? I don’t think so.
I used to belong to a volunteer fire hall and I can guarantee that when a hall responds to another’s area they have no idea if there is enough left in their area. While the call is going on the people who were in the area to cover can end up going to do other things and end up leaving the area. All halls do their best and hope they do but there is Jo guarantees. And Bill don’t sweat the running your mouth part cause as soon as you question a volly hall that’s the type of responses that happen. Most do a tremendous job and give a lot of their time but it’s still ok to question procedures and ask.
This insurance thing and not responding is a bunch of crap. The closest fire department in the city or not should have to respond. The city is mostly worried about not getting tax revenue from that house. The closest fire department should have to respond.
I stayed pretty clearly, the crew won’t leave without maintaining protection in their own fire protection area. Your little what if scenario is invalid. Before you bought your house you should have had a better understanding of fire protection districts and authority having jurisdiction.
Stated*
So right Somerled.
The city will NOT leave their jurisdiction on any account. All of the vfd’s have a mutual agreement towards fires, etc. It is such a huge benefit to have extra trucks to simply haul water to keep up with a fire truck. And of course not to leave their hall short handed.
Wouldn’t you appreciate the extra help if it were your own house?
My little scenario is not invalid at all. I know who serves me ,,, its not the city .I hope that if I ever needed them they where not 25 30 km away on the complete opposite side of town when there where others closer .Now WHO is running there mouth ? think about it
When a vfd responds to a mutual aid call out usually they will send only a tanker truck and two members ONLY if there is adequate backup for their own hall. Plus a certain amount of members must stay back at hall on standby until mutual aid is complete.
In stating that I would say that all bases are covered.
Thanks for that Tractor, you answered my question.
Just so everyone knows. All the Volunteer hauls have the same rules. When we get paged out for a mutual aid call, we have to respond to our hall. Then a count of how many people are available is done. We have to maintain our own community first so if there are enough people we don’t go. That’s why they put out the mutual aid call to so many halls.
There are rules in place, and I dont know what hall you belong to 16 and if your hall does that great, but I know that that isnt how it works at all halls. And as for “volunteer” do not most halls pay their members some money now? Be it monthly or a financial bonus at certain times of the year?
Some do pay some don’t, those that don’t are able to get a tax credit if you have 200hrs of service a year.
You have to think of it this way:
It doesn’t matter what kind of agreement you have, if an insurance company lawyer finds anyway not to pay they won’t. So having men and equipment outside the area seems (to me) like a good reason not to PAY.
It’s all about the MONEY
remember we are the working poor and they like to keep us that way
It is up to each halls’ chief to decide if a pair of the volunteer firefighters are permitted to leave the coverage area with an asset (water tender) He or she would have to believe that there are sufficient persons available to respond to an emergency in their zone. To do otherwise is to expose the hall (the chief, actually) to liability in the event a hall could not respond in a timely manner to a call in their own area.
It would be very unwise for the officers of any given hall to do so.
Just a note: there were several women among the volunteers at this fire scene, in various roles, including firefighter.
Thanks to all who took time off their Easter Sunday to give of themselves in aid of strangers.
