Moving Day Starts Today For RCMP
Prince George, B.C. – Today is the first of five days of moving for the Prince George detachment of the RCMP.
The detachment is moving from the building at 10th and Brunswick, to the new $38.5 million dollar facility on Victoria.
During the move, the local detachment will still be responding to calls for service whether it be 9-1-1 or non emergency calls to 250-562-3300.
Services offered by the front counter staff, such as criminal record checks, chauffer permits and finger printing will still be available at the old detachment today through Thursday, from 8:00 am to 6 pm at the old detachment building. While those services are still being offered, the RCMP are asking that if at all possible, members of the public hold off on going to the old detachment this week.
The old detachment will be closed to the public on Friday the 25th and on the weekend of the 26th and 27th.
The Community Policing office will also be moving to the new detachment building on Victoria. It will be closing its doors at its 6th and Brunswick location at 5 p.m. on Wednesday to allow time for the move to the new facility.
Monday, April 28th, the doors at the new Prince George RCMP Detachment and the new Community Policing office will be open to the public at 8 a.m.

I wonder what the city is going to do with the old facility? If it is true that the building is in such bad shape, are they going to fix it or tear it down? Seems like its a fairly big well built building to just destroy.
With the little upkeep it got, and compared to more modern buildings, it is in “bad shape”.
So the question is, why are buildings such as the RBC, Scotiabank and TD buildings which were built around the same time not in such bad shape?
TD got new exterior cladding, as did the Scotiabank. So why did they not do the same with the RCMP building if they thought it was so derelict looking?
Also PGSS, 67/68

They’re going to tear it down and build the PAC on the site. Walking distance from that fancy new hotel so that all them rich fold who will be flocking to town don’t actually have to see the town. :)
You’re seriously asking why bank buildings 3 to 4 times the size of the detachment which haven’t been servicing twice the people they were designed to are in better shape? Seriously?
Might be billion dollar profit, might be paying customers they’re trying to attract, might be that maintenance is a tax writeoff for one and a 100% charge for the other.
Once it was realized that tge building was going to be a writeoff, the right decision was to stop spending money on it.
I think the issue is that, the city of PG need for the RCMP services has changed since it was originally built in the 70’s.
The problem with the old building was it had serious ventilation and envelope issues, and the new demands placed on the RCMP meant a bigger building.
So it was a better move to build a new building, than spend 1/2 as much to remodel the existing building and end up with a old building again.
I believe they missed the target, and should have built all five storeys now, rented out areas not used to related industry. than slowly reclaim floors as required.
I heard that studio 2880 was moving into the old cop shop, than I heard last fall the RCMP was still going to hold onto it….
I hope that the RCMP clears out of the old building, the city guts it out, and turn the space into the new studio 2880. Sell the site of the old Studio 2880 and then recover some money.
“You’re seriously asking why bank buildings 3 to 4 times the size of the detachment which haven’t been servicing twice the people they were designed to are in better shape? Seriously?”
Yes, seriously. You realize, of course, that the “bank buildings” are leased. I believe the Scotia Building, for instance, is owned by one of the local lumber families. The Oxford building is owned by a retirement fund.
The RCMP building is the same. It is not owned by the RCMP, it is owned by the City.
The RCMP works shifts. Their total staff is never in the building at the same time. A typical office for lawyers, banks, etc. is different. During working hours most employees are in the office. On top of that, banks and some other offices have clients who are allowed into the building, so they have to have room for them and they have to put up with their “use” of the building finishes – floors, counters, washrooms, etc.
Turn it into a homeless shelter. Can’t have too many of those.
The first thing this building is going to be used for is to set up office space for all the news media, and support staff for the Winter Games. After that I think that they will locate Studio 2880 in the building and sell the 2880 property on 15th Avenue. That way they can generate some revenue to help pay for the reno’s.
The old building was never as bad as people made it out to be. It could have been fixed up without too much trouble. However the powers to be wanted a new building so they could spend some more of our money, and now they have it.
In fact at one point City employee’s and council were cautioned about trashing the old jail, because it could have a detrimental effect on trying to sell it at a later date.
Lets sit back and watch what the City does with this building, and then determine if we were given a line of BS from the get go.

Hey, guess what, stuff changes. Today’s plans might not work out depending on a variety of unforseen factors.
A lot of people might simplistically write this off as ‘lying’, but I would rather the City adapts to a changing situation rather than inflexibly staying with something that might not make sense in the future.
Exactly …. the Delta may even convert it to a chocolate museum and draw people from all over Canada to see Canada’s most northern chocolate museum.

The possibilities are endless. ;-)
