Prince George, B.C.- A portion of historic George Street in downtown Prince George is gone.
Around 11:30 last night, a fire ravaged buildings on the west side of the 300 block of George Street.
At least two businesses were destroyed in the fire which struck Something Old and Something New, an antique and imports store in the block.
There will be smoke and water damage to surrounding buildings, but the extent of damage to the Copper Pig restaurant, which was on the south side of the building that was the focal point of the blaze, is not known.
A security guard at the construction site of the Wood Innovation and Design centre, just one block away, says he first smelled smoke around 11:30 . “I could smell something, so I checked the building, all the garbage bins and found nothing, but I could still smell smoke”. He pointed to the scene of the blaze and added “That’s when I saw some smoke coming from over there, but no flames like that, so I called 9-1-1 but someone had already called it in.”
George Street was off limits from 2nd Avenue to Fifth, and the area closed to traffic from Queensway to Dominion as firefighters battled the blaze.
While there were ambulances at the scene, there has been no word on anyone being injured.
There is also no word on what might have sparked this fire.
Flames shot tens of meters into the night sky, raining embers on the street below. The glow from the fire could be seen for several kilometers.
***Editor's note:
This story has been updated to clarify that the Copper Pig was not destroyed as was initially reported.

This is crazy. Three large fires in the past little while? Something’s amiss.
Yes it seems like it but it could also be three separate fires, all with accidental starts.
Its a shame to lose those old historic buildings. Many people have many fond memories of businesses that have variously occupied those places.
I agree axman, something is downright eerie about all of this.
Not necessarily illegal but definitely eerie.
Is it a full moon?
An opportunity for city hall to buy more land downtown.
An opportunity for city hall to buy more land downtown.
I wonder if something to do with the Copper Pig smoker?
Horrible news for the downtown. Hopefully they can get things rebuilt quickly and even better than before.
different antique store I think stitch.
I very sad, that was one awesome food. Hope they were well insured.
Hopefully the Copper Pig can re-build. And that’s really so sad about the antiques store, I’m sure some valuables that can never be replaced were lost. Buildings can be re-built.
I just read the article in CBC news. There is a little insert on Twitter that it did not burn down. I hope this gets verified soon.
That antique store hasn’t been open in years. The Copper Pig looked good, this is a sad loss for P.G. I am hoping it doesn’t remain a crater like other areas downtown.
Yes, I also agree with axman….somthing fishy about all this….lots of fires lately.
Hope the Copper Pig can get up and running-even if it’s in an new place! Awesome food, decent prices. Too bad about the old Shasta building, fond memories of eating in the Shasta as a kid. The antique store hasn’t been open for ages!
Copper Pug was not destroyed, but will be closed today to assess the smoke damage.
I love a good conspiracy theory as much as the next person, but until somebody official draws some sort of link between the fires, it’s just rempantspeculation250.com
err… rampantspectulation250.com
They should now rename the restaurant to roasted pig.
Copper Pig should relocate to College Heights. Maybe even city hall. C’mon up!
That is why we build firewalls. Looks like the copper pig will be OK.
So first on the menu will be Pork, double smoked!
If the Copper Pig Restaurant ends up having to relocate, I think the most obvious location would be that new building on Victoria St. between 4th and 5th avenues.
;)
With all due respect to the members.
