City Road Work Delayed
Prince George, B.C. – It is going to be a while yet before the city’s “most extensive road rehabilitation project ever” can begin.
A total of 29 locations are due to receive work under the City’s 2014 Transportation Capital Projects, with a total expenditure of $9.8 million. The City budgeted $7.1 million for road rehab this year with the other $2.7 million coming from the federal government’s Community Works Fund. Pittman Asphalt has the contract to supply the hot mix for the City road work this year.
Back at the beginning of May, Corporate Communications Specialist Michael Kellett indicated that the first of the 29 projects would get underway once the Victoria Day weekend was over. But that timetable has been set back.
Associate Director of Operations, Gina Layte Liston, says “what’s happening now is that the (Pittman) plant isn’t even up yet, in production.” She says the trial period, in which the City gets some hot mix and fills potholes to see if it will hold up, will be getting underway at the end of next week. “And then” she adds, “in approximately two weeks they’re looking at the plant being running at full.”
A spokesperson at Pittman Asphalt says the Prince George plant isn’t open yet. “It’s not delayed, our crew is working in Quesnel right now and we don’t run both centres because we only have one crew.” Asked when the plant here will be opening the spokesperson said “actually it’s going to be a while, because we’re starting our (Transportation) ministry job down there on Tuesday and it’s going to be weeks, probably, before we’re open here.”
The spokesperson says it will be sometime in June before they start work on the City contract but could not say when in June that might be. A meeting on the matter is planned for next week.
The first road resurfacing job on the City’s priority list is Westwood Drive, from Massey to Athlone. Asked whether some projects might be tackled simultaneously Layte Liston says “in a lot of cases that can be up to our contractor in terms of how things are going and what the weather is like.”
The City says additional road rehab projects could be taken on this year if there are funds remaining near the end of the season.

or has council decided ro recind this too?
“our crew is working in Quesnel right now and we donât run both centres because we only have one crew.”
Here’s a crazy thought…. hire a crew. It’s not like this scenario didn’t bite them in the ass.
I suspect its not just the crew, but also the equipment.
I doubt if they were ready for the big expenditure that the City is making this year. Perhaps the City should have given them more notice. Who the hell knows.
The City collects approx. $5 Million on the road rehab tax levy, and state that they budgeted $7.1 Million with an additional $2.7 Million coming from the Federal Government Gas Tax Fund. So where did the other $2.7 Million come from??
Seems to me this is the Federal Gas Tax money that was available in 2013 but was not spent. Had they spent it on roads last year they might not have this problem this year. Again. Who the hell knows.
one crew and one set of equipment that the crew operates
Here’s our small town thinking in action–AGAIN! May start the road work –in November?
So when the plans where made they didn’t look at the availability of workers or equipment ? Who would do that? If someone did that in my line of work they would no longer be employed.
Sounds to me like they aren’t at all interested in doing the copg work when they have a ministry contract to fulfill. If they bid on and won the Pg job but can’t or don’t want to start on time then the city should look at the next corporation that tendered a bid for the job.
Obviously out councilers knew about this because no one is this stupid not knowing that they don’t start in May, well then again this is our smalltown councilers thinking.
Hirer another crew
That’s what happens when everything gets contracted out. The city has no control.
Everyone remain calm and do not panic. The work will get done.
Our city needs it’s own asphalt plant. Given the states of our many roads and streets, it should be a no-brainer. (Just like Keystone, he asked) Good idea to start drilling core samples in the Haldi Road area. An asphalt plant, based on experience should be a shoo-in there.
To paraphrase a scene in the movie Treasure of Sierra Madre with Bogie, “We don’t need no stinkin’ OCP”.
Time more roads are made with concrete, which can be laid or repaired almost any time of the year.
Dont worry … the most important roads will be done.
any roads to do with the games
any roads that council lives or has a buisness on (4th Ave)
any roads that the important people live on.
Screw everyone else
Furtree. That reminds me of a experiment with concrete they did in Mackenzie 30 yrs ago. Never did here how it went . Anyone know? Was the strip of road by the apartment buildings on left heading to ganahatze (s)
So who was the idiot at city hall or on counsel that wrote up this contract? We have work that needs to be done and a time line (window) to get it done by where the weather is acceptable. If Pittman can’t do it because they are “busy” then pull the contract and grant it to someone else who can, as the prize phrase in Prince George goes “getter done”. This is just bull, if you tender a bid on a job, you need to comply with the terms set out in the tender, end of story. that’s the way it works with any other commercial contracts that are tendered. Cant meet your contracted obligations, you lose the job and it goes to the next bidder.
Why we keep getting served this crap from city hall is beyond belief, about time that we call the city and tell them we are fed up with these excuses and “acceptable delays”.
That’s what happens when you only do one tender or did they even bother to tender it out to more than one contractor like a normal city would!? This city like I’ve said a billion times since I moved here does everything BACKWARDS! Either way I didn’t vote these dumb people in so pretty much don’t have a say. Can’t wait until I can vote this fall.
I have long said PG needs to have its on asphalt plant. Without it PG has no control over the quality and timing of road repairs and maintenance. We have enough work in the city to keep it working and if need be have it operate as a crown type agency that can bid for highways ministry work as well.
PVal northwood used concrete to fix a bad patch of pavement at their rail crossing a few years back and it went from a yearly fix to something they have never had to fix again. Smooth as glass and held up very well in a high traffic area.
Huge joke,,, bid and then don’t have the crew or equipment to do it ,,,,, NEXT ,,, get serious city management , because now you are the joke.
Performance/ labor&materials bond…
Will the real slim shady please stand up, please stand up.
