Efforts Underway to Recover Vehicle From Kwitzil Lake
Prince George, B.C. – Efforts are underway to recover a vehicle that went into Kwitzil Lake, west of Prince George, in the wee hours of this morning.
Unconfirmed reports indicate that two people are believed to have been in the vehicle when it went into the water. Jeff Smedley with Prince George Search and Rescue says at this time “all that I know is that there is a vehicle in the lake. We are going to try and locate the vehicle and then try to pull it out.”
Prince George SAR, the Beaverly Volunteer Fire Department and Prince George RCMP are on the scene. It is also believed the RCMP dive team from Kamloops is on its way to the lake, approximately 32 kilometres west of Prince George. Asked if he can confirm that the dive team is on its way Smedley says “ya, technically we’re only allowed to work on the surface, so anything under the surface would require the RCMP dive team. That would be standard procedure.”
Smedley also cannot confirm an earlier report that the vehicle was occupied when it went into the lake. Asked if anyone is reported missing he says “it’s rumored that there’s people in the vehicle but I don’t know. I can’t confirm that.”
Several young people are believed to have spent the long weekend at the lake, which is often referred to as Gravel Pit Lake. Some of those at the scene are reported to have jumped into the water after the vehicle went in.
Prince George RCMP have not been available for comment on these developments.
