Prince George, B.C. – An RCMP spokesman at the scene believes it could be several hours before police provide further information on the possible drowning of two young people at Kwitzil Lake, 32 kilometres west of Prince George.

The RCMP has confirmed that a vehicle drove into the lake during a large party involving several people early this morning.  One person who attended the scene said several people dove into the water in an attempt to help what were believed to be two people in the vehicle.

Police were called to the possible drowning of two people at the lake, commonly known at Gravel Pit Lake, at approximately 4a.m. and were joined there by Prince George Search and Rescue and members of the Beaverly Volunteer Fire Department.  Late this morning the RCMP’s Underwater Recovery Team was flown in to the lake by a helicopter, which conducted sweeps of the lake area from the air before departing.

A police vehicle (above left) was parked just off Highway 16 at the head of the access road into the lake to prevent anyone from entering the scene.  The officer attending the roadblock indicated that Highway 16 would be blocked to traffic once the vehicle and any possible contents had been recovered.

At last word the RCMP said it did not have any information that would indicate  why the vehicle had entered the lake.
