Prince George, B.C.-  School District 57 Superintendent Brian Pepper has issued a statement in the wake of the tragedy  at Kwitzil (Gravel Pit) Lake.

Two people died at the site  early Sunday morning when the vehicle they were in  went  into the lake.

Although  the names of the victims have not been released,   Pepper says the impact of the tragedy  will be widespread "We are aware that all six high schools in the City of Prince George will be affected by the events of Sunday morning."

While  the  party at the lake  took place  post D.P. Todd prom,  and  according to police hundreds of people were in attendance,  Pepper makes it clear this party was not something  sanctioned by School District 57 " The Gravel Pit Lake gathering of school age youth and other young adults was not connected to any parent sponsored prom or grad event, nor was it connected to any school sponsored event. "

Pepper  says  a team has been  preparing for tomorrow's return to classes  "School district Student Support Services, Senior Administration and School Principals (District Critical Events Response Team) have spent the last two days preparing for student return to school following the long weekend. School staffs will be briefed about response protocol in each secondary school and the counselling departments of each school will receive and respond to students in need of support beyond that provided by their families over the last 2 days of the weekend.  In addition, our District Behaviour Team will be available to address specific needs as required.  Incidents of this type, especially at this time of year, affect staff as well.  We have a protocol in effect to provide support for staff."

The RCMP and the BC Coroners Service continue to  investigate.
