Some residents have had to leave their homes after an excavator struck a gas line          250News photo

Prince George, BC – Work on the new sewer line on Berwick Drive has ground to a halt after an excavator working on the project accidently struck a gas line just after 9.00am. today.

The main line on the street is four inch , it then breaks down into a one inch line. Some residents have left their homes after the smell of natural gas filled the air.

Crews are on the scene trying to fix the break.

A city crew member says, the basements of some homes will need to be checked to ensure that the gas has not gathered in their basements.

There is no estimate of when the line will be repaired.

Did they call before they dug the trench?

^^^ Probably, but look how that went.

I called once. The first question they asked me was if I had a computer. Keep up the good work, boys.

Looks like a disaster zone to me.

Did they not have a gas leak, when the stalled out hotel project was having foundations dug?? It seems the mapping of the gas lines was rather iffy back when it was done; but they now have electronic detectors – so learn how to read em??

“A city crew member says, the basements of some homes will need to be checked to ensure that the gas has not gathered in their basements.”

I guess that is a good precaution before lighting any pilot lights! But natural gas is lighter than air so none should accumulate in a basement unless the leak is in the basement.

So the cost of this gets passed on to the home owners ?

“So the cost of this gets passed on to the home owners ?”

The cost of any thing the city does gets passed on to the home owners. Hopefully (and I know this is what you were asking) it’s not passed on directly to the residents getting the upgrade.
