Town of Smithers Set to Honour Dan Hamhuis

Sunday, August 17, 2014 @ 3:50 AM

Smithers, B.C. – The Town of Smithers is getting set to honour local hockey hero Dan Hamhuis.

The current Canuck and part owner of the Prince George Cougars will be on hand as the town renames the north end section of First Avenue "Dan Hamhuis Way."

The ceremony takes place this Tuesday at 2 pm on First Avenue between Toronto Street and Dogwood Park.

In a press release the town says its honouring Hamhuis for "his accomplishments to the sport of hockey, the community, and to the new arena fundraising campaign."

Following the ceremony attendees will also have the chance to join Hamhuis in a game of street hockey and skills competition and will also be eligible to win an autographed jersey.

Mayor Taylor Bachrach says the decision to honour Hamhuis was an easy one.

"I don't think there is a kid under the age of 12 here that doesn't know who he is. He has helped put Smithers on the map."

A man very deserving of the honour. He has done lots to put PG on the map as well.
