City of Fort St. John Seeks Tree Planting Volunteers

Sunday, August 17, 2014 @ 2:23 PM

Fort St. John, B.C. – The City of Fort St. John is seeking volunteers to help plant trees at the Rotary Skatepark.

The initiative has been made possible with a grant on behalf of CN for the EcoConnexions From the Ground Up project.

Mayor Lori Ackerman says the aim is to help "green things up," and is nothing new.

"Well Fort St. John for years has been planting trees. We've been providing trees annually to the residents of the community to put in their front yard."

The Rotary Skatepark opened last September and with the EcoConnexions grant the city will purchase 20 ornamental trees.

"We plant a tree knowing that we may not enjoy its shade today but our grandchildren will when they grow up," says Ackerman.

The tree planting day takes place September 7 from 10 until 4.

If interested you're encouraged to call Community Development Coordinator Tara O'Donnell at 250-787-5791 or email her at communitydevelopment@fortstjohn.ca.

Those wishing to take part will be required to bring steel-toe boots and must be 16 years old.

Lunch and drink will be provided.
