Nearly half way through the month, and still no sign of a settlement in the teachers contract dispute.

This is your opportunity to speak up and share those concerns
It is time for the FRIDAY FREE FOR ALL

have a safe weekend and slow down..
Heard the sun had a major CME event yesterday that was one of the biggest on record. They say it will hit Earth Friday night and bring Northern lights all the way down to the lower 49. I don’t think this will be on the level of the Karington event that would destroy our computers and electrical infrastructure causing mass starvation and send us back to the dark ages… but it may be worth while to have any electronics unplugged just in case.
Should be a rare clear night when we can really see the Northern lights so that will be cool.
Sounds like gonna be a nice warm weekend… ENJOY everyone :)
I really wish people would turn their headlights on while driving on the highway. It is amazing how many people won’t turn their headlights on even in a major rain storm that cuts down visibility considerably. I had a car pass me in a rain storm last week that was essentially invisible until it was right next to me and one would think if you are going to pass on the highway in heavy rain, the least one could do is turn their headlights on?
Would be great to enjoy the weekend at one of the local provincial parks, but they closed them down early again this year. I was camping at Whiskers Point last weekend and can’t say enough about what a great campground that is. Almost like an old growth forest camping experience, with an excellent beach and playground area for children. Then Sunday rolls around and they say the park is now closed for the season… really they had like only 2 empty camp sites at the time… the campground was essentially full to capacity, and they announce its now closed and everyone has to leave.
It makes no sense, when we are just now getting into the best part of the camping season where all the bugs are gone and the weather is a little cooler. Is this part of Provincial budget cuts we don’t really see… shortening the time provincial parks are open?
Sure looks like we have no plan yet to be ready for the Canada Winter Games. Looking around the city and it looks like we will have an epic fail in putting our best foot forward. I look around and we have weeds everywhere growing out of the medians, out of the curbs, and some have been there so long they are beginning to look like small trees. Can’t the city buy a cordless weed whacker and set someone to work on it? Maybe we should have a city bylaw limiting weed height to no more than 2″ similar to the snow removal minimums? Maybe seal coat some of the medians?
Then we have the paint on the curbs… it looks horrible all worn out with no consistency. The highways department especially should be ashamed at the condition of their road side. In a few weeks it will be too late and this is the condition we will present our city to the rest of the country. Why do the road sides look clean in other cities and ours always seem to be in a shape part way between the ghost town look and retro 70’s.
Are we going to have garbage cans around the city for the games? They are almost a rare sighting in this city these days. Its just laziness by city hall IMO. One goes to a place like Mackenzie and they have a garbage can at every picnic table in the city, every trail, and all the public parking lots. Maybe we could learn from Mackenzie how to beautify our city? It will be tough to try and do this at the last minute in the middle of winter when all the focus is on the games… so the city of PG dropped the ball here too IMO.
They closed Whiskers already eagle? Bizarre..
Come on PG. Buy a ticket on the Hospice house. I got mine. Support a great cause.
ps: Don’t forget the 50/50
Sept 8th was shutdown for all provincial parks in the district Dow. Not used to us having such a great long summer. Have to put the motorhome earlier than I wanted to but let’s home next summer is as great as this one :)
Had a good laugh at 1 this morning. Douche at Gauthier Rd blows the red light and turns left heading for town after swerving into the opposing lane around a car waiting for the light to change. The cop behind me saw it too. He didn’t get the guy stopped until Domano.
Dragonmaster: Good! At least there was a cop there to see it and take action! Hope we all have an enjoyable, safe weekend.
What’s up with Costco gas.. Sure shooting up fast… like they didn’t want to be left behind of Can Tire
With the so called aging fleeting of city equipment one would think the city would at least look at the possibilities of contracting out snow removal to reduce the cost to tax payers.
Not to mention every time a city Councillor fart they have to hire a consultant to determent which direction the wind will blow. No mention of consultant fees cost or credentials?
Maybe it is time to enforce accountability on all levels from the mayor down to the guy hired to pick discarded gum from the undersides of picnic tables.
They are actually repairing some old sidewalks and even constructing some new ones! That is such a rare sight that it almost brings tears to one’s eyes! Anything to do with the Winter Games?
not to worry eagleone, in feb/15 you wont see the grass. get it?
Many of the Liberal apologists on this site have blamed the NDP for the Doctors’ arbitration award in 2002. As usual, the information presented is skewed to present the Liberal view of the universe rather than present the facts. The first fact is that the NDP had already been replaced by the Liberals by the time the award was made. They allowed the arbitration to continue after taking office.
A BCMA document “has this to say:
“On February 8th , 2002 this panel reached a unanimous decision and awarded the doctors of BC a competitive remuneration
package. One month later, on March 5th 2002, the government of BC moved to unilaterally end the binding arbitration process and enacted legislation, called Bill 9, which eliminated any future binding arbitration processes.”
“The months of hard work paid off in the most telling measurement of all- the doctors ofBC received a new agreement May 30th, 2002, that was accepted and endorsed by the Board of Directors of the BCMA, and ratified by the general membership on July 16th , 2002. Ironically, this fmal agreement awarded doctors a slightly richer package than the one the arbitration panel had awarded only a few months earlier.”
Note that last point, that the final agreed award was more generous that the one awarded by the arbitrators. The Liberals agreed to give them more than they had been awarded in binding arbitration. So why blame the NDP for the Liberals’ own decision to give doctors more than the award? The only possible reason would be to slag the Opposition, a process that continues by Liberal apologists to this very day in the teachers’ dispute.
I predict teachers will be back by the 22nd. I am going to leave the month out just to be safe though! Let’s get it done this time!
Good to know that YRB is supporting our forestry industry. All the road signs going west from PG are now held up by wooden 4×4’s. Seems the galvanized steel poles weren’t good enough or last long enough. Who knew?
Good point ammonra!
Livingonwater, those 4×4 posts were more than likely imported from the states. As they were a few years back and was reported in the news at the time.
ammonra: “Many of the Liberal apologists on this site have blamed the NDP for the Doctors’ arbitration award in 2002.”
They did? There has been a lot of mention about the doctor’s arbitrated settlement causing a PST increase and other tax increases to pay for it. I don’t recall anyone blaming the NDP for that.
And there’s no question, plenty has been said about Glen Clark giving a gift of a contract to the BCTF back in 1998 in a desperate attempt to win votes which robbed the government’s ability to set education policy, a contract that is in dispute to this day and is a big reason for the current teacher’s strike. It’s something that many BCTF/NDP apologists don’t want to acknowledge.
to the person commenting about the weeks…the games are in February, they will all be covered with snow!! All the city is worried about is making sure snow removal will be done!

Any motorcyclists out there? Do east Indians follow a different set of laws when it comes to bike helmets because of their culture and religion? I have seen two east Indians in town riding motorcycles without helmets, one was a good sized Harley. Do they have to pay a special insurance that would let the rest of us off the hook it they suffer brain damage and their insurance has to pay out big time? Just wondering.
Just a pet peeve to air.. What is with people driving around with their bumper( fog lights, driving lights) whatever you want to call them. They are not to be on when meeting opposing traffic! Sure wish the RCMP would begin to enforce the law on that front. There are a few ( Bandstra, Lomak)just to name a couple that leave them on day and night. A real problem for all the smaller vehicles that have to meet them.
As far as the teachers strike, I agree with the letter to editor in the PG Citizen a few days ago, I want a pony. I question what are our children being taught now a days, when they don’t get what they want, go on strike, strikes never solve anything and never will, nobody wins. Very sad,It is easy to blame the government, but can any teachers lead this Province and come up with a balanced budget?????
Huh……yes they do follow a different set of rules. They are exempt from the helmet laws under some religious clause.
Different laws for different people, that’s why we live in BC. Note though, don’t break your law you’ll get busted.
First time I’ve ever had a seniors discount from my home insurance company. Wait a minute ……it went up $80.00 from last year, maybe I’m not understanding what a discount is.
“It’s no surprise that I see the greatest financial Bubble in history. I believe asset market inflation and Bubbles have been fueled by speculative leverage exceeding pre-2008 crisis levels. I see global financial and economic imbalances that have been exacerbated by six years of the most extreme monetary policy measures. By now, this type of analysis has been completely discredited. Few will care that I discern acute vulnerabilities.”
