Marathon Talks Continue

Monday, September 15, 2014 @ 7:50 AM

Prince George, B.C. – Marathon contract talks between the BCTF, BCPSEA, and mediator Vince Ready are set to resume again this morning at a hotel in Richmond.

The talks, which broke off around 2 am this morning, have been ongoing since late last week but because of a media blackout, little is known what’s coming out of them.

The talks were preceded by an overwhelming teacher’s vote (99.4%) Wednesday in favour of binding arbitration, yet the government rejected the idea outright.

Education Minister Peter Fassbender says he’d prefer to come to a negotiated settlement with teachers, though he’s admitted legislating an end to the dispute could become an option.

Even if a deal is reached today it’s unlikely B.C.’s 500,000 students would be heading back to classrooms tomorrow as the union would have to hold a vote to ratify any agreement.

Nice to see that the BCTF has dropped the calls for arbitration nonsense and has returned to the bargaining table. Hopefully something gets worked out.

Not so fast! The BCTF has not ruled out binding arbitration! If these negotiations fail the BCTF is sure to again demand binding arbitration.

Yesterday the two parties actually met face to face! That is a positive sign that some progress has been made.

“…BCTF is sure to again demand binding arbitration.” Hilarious!

This apparently has been going on since Thursday. I wish both sides well and hope like everyone else that there is an agreement very soon.

The teachers are trying to fiqure out how to return to work and save face after trying to negotiate an unrealistic contract. We are returning for the kids should be their next ploy, not that we are running short of money. Notice all the pics of the picket line show everybody moving yet when you drive by most are flopped.

Way to get the government back to the table bctf, hopefully they government won’t walk out again.

Some perspective on the matter, with everything burning up in our forests and people flying in from as far away as Australia the total bill is still less than the BCTF’s increase as last proposed – even after Iker dropped his initial extras by 150 million.

From what I understand, the two sides are still far apart. According to Michael Smyth’s column in yesterday’s Vancouver Province newspaper:

“the union is seeking an eight-per-cent raise over five years; the government has offered seven per cent over six.

But they are further apart than it sounds because the union is also seeking a shortened salary grid so junior teachers get seniority based raises quicker, more preparation time and improvements to their benefits for things like parental leave and dental care.

The government says the two sides are still $166 million apart on wages and benefits.

And then there’s the $5,000 signing bonus sought by the union — a one-time cost of $150 million.”

Now I hear that the BCTF is preparing a new proposal to put forth to Vince Ready. I’m still hiding my wallet!!

“I’m still hiding my wallet!!” Very good! Except that ordinary people have been trying to hide their wallets without success ever since the invention of taxation! For the upper crust however there are always the offshore tax havens…minimum deposit probably a couple of millions or so.

Hiding my wallet.. Hehehe would be nice if it was that easy.

Hart guy.. Interesting stuff, to bad there is a media blackout so guessing your reporter is just making it up.

This will be all about Iker trying to save face. He would sign away his mother right now if it would get the pressure from his members off.

This will be all about Clark trying to hide ripping up the teachers contract when she was education minister and trying to hide the hundreds of millions she cost the province by doing this. At least mount polley can keep discharging their poisons under her watch.

I am so glad that they are keeping the negotiations out of the media.
This way they can grandstand AFTER a settlement is reached.

upper crust – offshore tax havens
teachers – defined benefits plan

gotcha!

Lol.. I have a defined benefits plan from work.. It isn’t any tax haven… Lol.. Got nothing…hehe
