Doherty and Winter Games Part Ways

Tuesday, September 16, 2014 @ 4:43 PM

Prince George, B.C.- Todd Doherty, who had been the Director of Revenue generation for the 2015 Canada Winter Games, is no longer  with the Winter Games .

250News  has confirmed his departure  from the organization, but CEO Stu Ballantyne  was not available for comment at this time.

The fund raising for the Games was close to 100% complete, by all accounts, ahead of where previous Games had been at this point.

Not sure what happened here. Todd generally a good guy. I can’t imagine that they would fire him. According to the last games presentation that I read here, the fundraising was only 75 percent complete and that was including over one million in budget reductions.

Let me be the first to thank Todd for his struggles to get the games off the ground and wish him luck in his next city or next job.

Editor’s note:
Correction sandwichking,
As of July 21st, the date of the last presentation to council, the Games were 94.1% funded, with revenue from merchandise and ticket sales yet to be added in. At the time, council gave the Games folks a symbolic show of support.

Sooooo…..how did you know Todd has moved on ? I know, gotta protect the source ;-) Couldn’t have come from the Public Relations/media guy. It’s been so long, was his name Mike Davis ? Am I close ?

If his job was raising funds prior to the Games, would he be expected to stay once fund raising was done? It sounds like he may just be moving on because his job here is done.

Thank you for the correction editor. I must have had old information. I went and looked at the July update as you suggest. However it looks to me like there is still $2,766,273 as well as $3,250,000 still to be achieved. It looks to me like they are including the “forecasted” revenue in the 94%. So, infact they are still about 6,000,000 to go including unearned revenue. It just seems weird that he would leave the job unfinished with the games 4 months away. Why not finish the job? Another PG mystery.

Thank you, Todd. I was not a believer in the games until I saw you speak about them. I am not sure why you are leaving but I suspect by some of the above comments they know.

Just remember, there has never been a statue dedicated to a critic. Don’t understand why they would be critcizing when at the last council meeting, I think it was Shari who said you were doing such a great job. I do know council was unnanamous in their support.

sandwichking says “It just seems weird that he would leave the job unfinished with the games just 4 months away”. Check his resume…..

Didn’t Todd just recently express his interest in being a Member of Paliament, or King of Siam, I think it was the former.

There is a Mayor job and some councillor positions up for grabs. Maybe the wind changed direction in his backyard.

Whoops ! Addendum…..In no way am I implying that Todd left his former positions or occupations on his own accord. My apologies for any misconceptions.

Didn’t he also leave the airport expansion job unfinished as well. Seems to be the point guy for the big unsustainable dreams of those that spend public dollars… Until the dream falls apart?

Wow! I heard politics in pg were silly but this is really silly. If pg would actually allow for progress to come, we might actually have a chance for others to move to this city of really great people. Who for the most part actually talk to each other even at the grocery stores.
Sadly there are people who will talk about the great airport and games and how well they went, after they are over. And never admit they were against every movement towards progress. We will never be a city of more than 80,000 if we never do anything. Success comes when opportunity meets someone or some place who is prepared. Seems to me we are as a city getting closer but only because of some moves that in the beginning might cost a bit. Kind of like education.

The city allowed for a new hotel to build adjacent to the libary and just drive by and take a look at the progress to date. It is a shame commitments are allowed to be stalled.

The rumour is they will be back on line soon. Hopefully, that is true but what if we as a community do nothing. We could be perfect as some have advocated.

If we do that then let’s go back 25 years to no UNBC and move forward. That would mean none of the jobs at UNBC. No medical program, no MGS program. No university hospital. No sports centre. I suspect we might be in a really bad situation in PG.

We as a community are not perfect and I am glad we are not. There are some areas we can improve on like taxes and spending.

By the way I fully disagreed with buying the PG hotel and closing it. The day after it closed I realized I was wrong. The atmosphere down town on George street changed. I don’t like the look of the new building but I support the idea 100%. We had to do something it is a start. Perfect no but who knows what it will bring in 25 year if we as a community support it.
Who knows what the airport will bring. Not sure if this is true for you but in the last 25 years I have flown more. Yep I am old enough to have flown the previous 25 year. :)

Lives here a long time. The Airport will continue to fly people in and out of Prince George as it always has.

What it wont do is attract any new business just because it extended its runway to 11000ft at a cost of $36 Million. This project was completed and had its **famous** ribbon cutting ceremony in 2009. Five years later we have not attracted any additional business.

Is it a failed project??? If it is, no one who supported it in the first place is admitting it. They all stand with their necks crooked to the sky waiting for the little guy to holler.

***The plane Boss the plane***

I agree the airport is a tough one but we also had an economy collapsed just as it was completed. Yes, people will duck and cover while we recover and you will probably have me, for a few more years but both our memories are long.

I was against the airport too, but I am realizing if we don’t move forward we are like a canoe on a river, we go backwards. These types of project leave legacies for our children. They will have not idea we paid $36 when it would have cost them $100 or $200 million if when we need it, they did not have it. Hopefully we will maintain it.

Our vision may not always be perfect, well maybe we don’t have a coordinated one. We kind of had one with MyPG. I still feel a bit stupid for supporting it because I don’t know what happened to it.

Great sense of humour, you made me smile.
