Prince George, B.C. – Over 60 supporters were on hand this afternoon in PG’s Knowledge Garden to watch long time resident Terri McConnachie formally announce her plan to run for a council seat this November.

And after a lifetime of work in the non-profit sector, including her current role as Executive Officer with the Canadian Builder’s Association of Northern BC, she says it’s time.

“It’s perfect timing for me personally. It just feels right. I have a lot to offer the community I love and have a lot invested in. It’s time to give back.”

If elected, McConnachie promises a “back to basics” approach to governance.

“It means paying attention and focusing our tax dollars on the things that make a community sound and healthy. That’s water, sewer, and safety. All the things that are essential.”

She says one thing that wasn’t essential was the present administration’s decision to spend $130,000 on a snow removal report.

“It was not necessary. Absolutely not. That being said everything Mercury (from Washington D.C.) said was very sound but we didn’t have to go there to get it.”

McConnachie says now is also not the time for a Performing Arts Centre.

“I’d love to see it happen. It’s a great concept but that time is just not now.”

Those on hand today included current councillor’s Brian Skakun, Garth Frizzell and Frank Everitt.

McConnachie is the third new candidate to announce a run at council. The other two are Susan Scott and Jillian Merrick.

Yet another person who has zero clue how to run a City. It worked out pretty well with Queen Green…so nothing to lose trying it again, right??

The ‘back to basics’ is a common theme for those seeking a council seat, and nothing we haven’t heard before. The key is seeing what they do once they get that seat. Most of them fall into the old status quo.

You seem to be confident with your opinions “realitycheck” are you stepping up to the plate? how about you J.B. you seem to brag at how you dominate this blog. Take it to the next level, the real world J.B. the real world!

realitycheck; your comment “Yet another person who has zero clue how to run a City” indicates you do not know this person at all.

She successfully managed the PG Exhibition for many years. Anyone who can manage a non-profit organization knows how to budget, and make due with
limited funds.

Congrats Terri;
I am happy to hear that you are taking on this new challenge, and I will be in touch, to see how I can support you.

Yeah, you go woman !

I’m far too honest to be a local politician. People want their egos stroked, and I am not good at that.

Certainly agree with the back to basics statement. Also the fact that we should be leaders in snow removal not followers.

This is the first politician that came right out against a Performing Arts Centre at this time. Have to agree with that statement also.

Its one thing to have some good ideas, but it another to get elected. I understand that there will be a number of people announcing before the cut off date. The more that run, the more that the vote is split, and the better chance the incumbents have of getting elected.

I think that four of the eight present councilors should probably be re-elected if for no other reason than this is their first term, and they are just starting to figure out the game. Some of the older Councilors (not mentioning any names) should probably be looking for a career change.

Give her a chance. Gotta be better than at least half that are there.. Odds are anyway!

I’ll vote for anyone who has the guts to tell me they’re joining the race because they want to line their pockets and the pockets of their friends rather then voting for someone who spouts nonsense about back to basics. This city ain’t moving forward until someone addresses the elephant in the room; and that’s the inordinate number of people on the payroll-managers as well as workers.

Thank axman straight to the point. I was mesmerized by J.B. glowing halo.

All I ask is do you support the PAC?

If yes, NEXT!

“And after a lifetime of work in the non-profit sector,” Please define a lifetime. She didn’t say she was against a PAC. She said not at this time. i would like to know what criteria she will use to determine when it is time.

Yesterday it was all about “back to schools” and here comes “back to basics” …

axman: “This city ain’t moving forward until someone addresses the elephant in the room; and that’s the inordinate number of people on the payroll-managers as well as workers.”

Anyone who said that would never get elected. Unions and government workers run this town and would not appreciate that kind of message.

True, but at some point the people have to stand up, acknowledge that we have way too many people sucking on the taxpayer’s teat and demand that it change.

Hallelujah axman, Hallelujah!!

If unions and government workers run this town, how do we always end up with liberal, conservative,or socred MLA’s and MP’s being voted into office in PG then?Wouldn’t the union and government workers prefer an NDP representative?I think this town is run by the wealthy older conservative clique that has always ruled everything in PG!

True, but at some point the people have to stand up, acknowledge that we have way too many people sucking on the taxpayer’s teat and demand that it change.

So in specific terms, how many people does the city need to manage their operations? If you are able to claim that there are too many right now, then I trust you’ve done the detailed analysis, broken down by each service and department? Where do the discrepancies lie?

Don’t answer it axman looks to me like someone is fishing for ideas on how to do there job.

He’s a civil servant; they always get defensive when someone points out that there are too many of them.

Let’s get this straight. Ms. McConnachie has never been employed, help organize or volunteered for the Air Show! The BCNE (PGX) historically has been in struggling for as many years as it is old! It relies on grants, community support and wonderful volunteers, all these are things that are less and less with each passing year. The Homw Show seen more people through than it has in years! Do your home work before you post things that are NOT TRUE! Contact her, sit down and have a coffee with her (I did) address your concerns. You will see. You got my vote TM.
