Teachers Vote Today
Prince George, B.C.- Teachers throughout B.C. are casting ballots today on the tentative agreement reached this week with the help of mediator Vince Ready.
Teachers who are members of the Prince George District Teachers Association will be meeting at the Prince George Civic Centre at 1:00 this afternoon to go over details of the proposal and allow teachers to cast ballots. Ballots will also be accepted at the PGDTA office on Queensway from 8:30 this morning until 4:00 this afternoon.
President of the PGDTA, Tina Cousins says the tentative deal was still being developed as of 5:00 yesterday as the two sides worked on the details.
How are teachers in the region viewing the package that will give them a 7.25% wage hike over 6 years? “I’m getting mixed reviews” says Cousins “To sum it all up, no one is celebrating. It is unfortunate we had to go this far to get a deal, and is it the be all end all? No it’s not, but there are some improvements. We will have to wait and see what the membership decides.”
The BCTF is recommending acceptance, final results should be known by 10 tonight.

And if they reject it?
I don’t see why they’d reject it; the province has agreed to hire hundreds of new teachers and that’s what this was all about wasn’t it? (Almost kept a straight face while typing that!)
I hope the teachers don’t sell themself short . Once a liar always a liar and that is the Christy Clark way .
I guess it shouldn’t be too surprising that Jim Iker had the fortitude to stand strong in the face of endless criticism and demands to change his position. This is a man who walks confidently through life rocking an epic mullet and for whom “Movember” has been in fashion since puberty. All this despite what one can only assume is a never ending and increasingly creative barrage of insults and demands from family and friends to stop walking around like he’s waiting to shoot the next scene in FUBAR. I don’t know how he fights through that kind of adversity. I’m so whipped my wife tells her hair stylist how to cut my hair. Stay strong brother. Solidarity forever.
Z T , good one …. made my day :}
I’ve heard that there is a bit of dissention within the ranks! Seems some teachers aren’t happy with the agreement!
I suspect that the agreement will be ratified and if so, I wonder how many, if any of the unhappy BCTF members will tender their resignations and move on to what they consider greener pastures, perhaps a different province or a different career path.
Many of the left wing, union and teacher supporters on this site have criticized those of us from the “right” who want, expect and demand accountability for the tax dollars that we contribute and the services that we all pay for. We are told that we are a bunch of whiners who made poor career choices!
So, as someone who very much enjoys playing the Devil’s Advocate, I just really really really have to ask all the lefties on this site if you will now be telling any and all of the disgruntled BCTF members that they have only themselves to blame for their poor career choices?
Not getting much in a New Contract for all the time and money this Strike/Lockout should of produced.
“Not getting much in a New Contract for all the time and money this Strike/Lockout should of produced”.
?? oneofakind; Striking for pay hikes is never profitable especially after 5 weeks with no pay, but than again it was for the kids.
This is the crux of parent’s discontent: We knew all along the BCTF would settle for an offer that they could have voted on all last year. E80 didn’t come along until the BCTF began talking bellicose to the media, in June. Parents were also well aware of the quixotic nature of the BCTF, wherein they would instruct their members to strike, sacrifice paycheques, in-order to land a signing bonus that was less than what they lost in wages, while fighting for it. There was nothing in this tentative agreement that couldn’t have been agreed upon, without using students as pawns.
Hart guy – are you kidding? Blame themselves? That’s the number one union mantra “its not my fault!”. Well, that and “its not my job!” But that’s another story.
interceptor, after all the shots that the lefties have taken at me and others on this site for our poor career choices(?), you just had to know that I was going to ask them if they were going to take any shots at any disgruntled BCTF members, haha!
Hart guy.. You are such a rumour queen..lol. ” I heard there is some dissection.. What contract gets voted %100 acceptance. The funny thing is you whine and complain about what they want for how little they do then post that, you know who will vote no.. The ones that want more..the ones you despise. But here you are giving them a voice with your rumour. Lol.
We don’t get any accountability from our provincial government but you want it from the bctf.. Laughable
Use whatever it takes Jimmy! In the end if the classrooms are better composed and the required help is available who cares how they got there!
Life according to hart guy!! No wonder he can’t afford more tax. He spends all his time on the net. His business must be suffering.
They talked to a bunch of teachers on they news and most of those voting yes are still snivelling that they did not get everything they wanted, Boo Hoo.
Baldrey predicted a 65-75% yes vote.
The most positive to come out of this is that in 5 years when they sit down for talks the tf might take the process of negotiations a little more seriously as they now know what it feels like to miss paydays for a couple of months.
Kudos to Christy Clark, Peter Fassbender and Peter Cameron for getting a 6 year deal with the tf. No other government in the last 3 decades has been able to get this long a deal with the problem children of the public service.
P Val, I’m hardly a rumour queen! Have you not seen any of today’s news reports, including numerous interviews with voting teachers. They don’t seem very positive about the agreement!!
8, any comment from you isn’t taken very seriously! By the way, business is doing very well, thank you very much!! You seem to spend a lot of time on the net, with numerous posts on this site. Hope your boss doesn’t catch you doing it on company time! ;-)
Sure hart guy. Keep up the good work. Got my CSI hat on today. You fit right in.
Speaking of liars FedUp2015 yIker has told a few doozies. His whole premise of going to the media was to constantly misdirect the media away from what he was asking for. Hope the people of BC didn’t get fleeced too bad by yIker and his crew.
Misdirect, that’s the liberal party’s credo… What have we heard about mount polley since the teacher strike ? Nothing yet they are still discharging into the water shed, what have we heard about the 900 million taken from ICBC, nothing but they are raising our rates because of the costs of texting accidents.. What have we heard of Clark charging $475000 to her visa, nothing as it’s pushed aside because of the teachers.
The queen of misdirection
“I don’t see why they’d reject it; the province has agreed to hire hundreds of new teachers and that’s what this was all about wasn’t it?” .. actually that only equates to 2.3 more teachers per school district per year, and those are non-enrolled teachers so they move around and don’t have a permanent school they work from. So really, they didn’t get anything of any significance.
Iker is a prime example of a person in the wrong position. A real good negotiator would have had this wrapped up last May and the kids would not have missed any school. But then, he’s not a negotiator. What’s left?
Instigator?
Its funny how good the BCTF supporters math is at how few teachers we will get for $400 million dollars but they couldn’t figure out that their original demands were completely unaffordable. It goes both ways.
interceptor;
“their original demands were completely unaffordable.”
Unaffordable? How about a stadium roof.
It’s all about priorities. I believe the Liberals have underfunded education for years.
And I’m not referring to teachers’ salaries.
Sorry, totally unrelated to teachers…
A couple of weeks back , the people that were getting wet from the roof leaking on them at the Whitecaps game, got free beer. Bonus !
The reason the first demands were unaffordable was because of the court ruling against the government for bargaining in bad faith etc
Of course the government failed to mention that and kept saying it was wages.. Lies of course but what else would you expect from Clark.
P Val:
Some people got it P Val, but some of the posters here will never get it.
Hey hart guy…..Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

I heard upwards of 800 new. Given that there are 60 school districts that’s a bit more then 2.3 per district.
Man Karmen, enough about the friggin roof. It’s irrelivant to the teachers issue. If that’s all you got, you have zero argument.
Dragonmaster, I expected a whiny comment from you hours ago. What took you so long? Babysitter wouldn’t let you out of your room? Nap ran too long? Had to have your diaper changed?
Speaking of whining, I’ve seen a lot of it from the teachers on this evening’s news broadcasts! Boo freakin’ Hoo!! One teacher mentioned that he wanted to vote “no”, but was going to vote “yes” because he was going broke!
Gee, now he knows how others without job security feel! Most people work without anything close to the level of job security that teachers have. Layoffs, firings, bankruptcies are all realities for many, many workers. Hard to feel sorry for teachers that are going broke because they chose to go on strike!
dow7501, what karrman fails to realize or recognize is that once in a while, every once in a while, the average taxpayer expects or hopes to get something out of their tax dollars, something besides paying for public services and public sector wages! If that something turns out to be a roof on a stadium, or hosting the Olympics, so be it! Sometimes it’s a swimming pool, sometimes a grant to an arts organization!
Not every single tax dollar has to go to paying for Government services and paying Government employee wages!!
Some people get it! Karrman, sorry that you don’t!
karrman, back during the start of the teacher’s job action, while teachers were involved in rotating strikes, I saw a picture of Jim Iker and Jim Sinclair, out together enjoying a BC Lion’s game in of all places, BC Place! They seemed to be enjoying themselves, completely oblivious to the plight of their membership! The roof wasn’t leaking but there were definitely two big drips in the stadium that day!
Neither of these two clowns seemed concerned about public money being spent on the roof. I bet they probably weren’t even worried about the cost of the football tickets, as they probably billed the cost to their unions!
karrman, perhaps you should give each of them a call to express your concerns and point out your priorities to them!!
P Val concerning your 2 pm post
Mount Polley
=>Last I heard the 1st priority was to get Polley lake level low enough to deal with the debris plug at the outlet in order to not risk peoples lives working in a dangerous environment
=>There have been more inspections per year every year since the liberals took power than the last couple of years of the dipper disaster-Glen Clark
=>those doing the inspections are not political appointees but ministry employees that could very well be card carrying union members.
ICBC
=>Are you trying to say the dippers never dipped in the till of crown corporations?
Credit Card
=> Although I am not privy to the charges on the card I do know that a lot of companies and governments are increasingly using plastic as a way to simplify the mass amount of paper- po’s and invoices in accounts payable. If you want proof go to the city’s website and look at the annual finacial statements. Payments to some of the biggest vendors are mainly via procurement card.
=>Any charges to the card must meet certain criteria and are looked at and approved. As I have not heard of the auditor general looking at this I would conclude all charges are legit.
Another insightful and well reasoned post from Dragonmaster? Baby steps, at least no one was called an idiot.
Hart Guy,
My belief is that our kids are the future.
I do not believe that our gov’t has funded education adequately.
The roof and Olympics: fine, but I don’t buy that we cannot invest in our kids.
Invest in education or the BCTF? After 30 years of this crap people are sick of it. I wish it was all about education. Call me jaded.
And, just for chits and giggles….the Vancouver Convention Centre upgrades cost twice as much to you and me as the leaky cable retraction roof on BC Place.
dow7501, the pay raise was 7.25% and they probably will sign, yet you will still claim that it was all about greedy teachers.
Sick of this crap? Do you mean the underfunding of education?
Isis, what tailing pond failed to this extreme under the previous gov watch ? Wow what a reach.. So it’s due to a union member doing the inspections that it failed..yikes.. Seek help dude.
ICBC.. It has become a huge branch of the government now.. But the liberal gov you love so much first take out 900 million then now say ICBC is broke from all the new accidents due to texting so have to raise rates,.. P,ease don’t tell me you believe that spew age from Clark’s yap
Campbell charged approx $225,000 and crusty doubles it and you find that okay..yikes. I am sure $4000 at a oyster bar us legit.
oh for crying out loud karrman, you go on and on about underfunding in the education budget
It seems to me that our education budget has increased each and every year for years and years. It also seems to me that our student population has been in a decline for many years.
So, fewer students AND more money, year after year after year!
If you have any evidence contrary to what I believe, please provide it!
Did this deal require a 3 month war? What a waste on all fronts.
