Prince George, B.C.- It was less than a year ago that the Caledonia Nordic Ski club and UNBC announced they were launching a fund raising effort to create a scholarship.
The goal was ambitious, raise $150 thousand dollars before the start of the Canada Winter Games in 2015. Well, eleven months after launching the fundraising event, the goal has been exceeded.
The Caledonia Nordic Ski Club contributed more than $ 40 thousand dollars, and with UNBC matching dollar for dollar, that pushed the effort to over $80 grand. Today, Enbridge Northern Gateway donated $50 thousand dollars, which, with UNBC matching dollars put the amount to $100 thousand and the total raised to $180 thousand.
But there is another boost.
Dave Snadden is a member of the Nordic ski club and is on the fundraising committee. He and his wife Moira have challenged the Club to raise $5 thousand, and he and his wife will match those dollars. That would turn into $20 thousand with the UNBC matching dollars.
While the criteria for the scholarship is not yet set, there is now enough money in the fund to give one qualifying Nordic athlete a full tuition scholarship, and a $1000 dollar scholarship to another in time for the start of classes in September 2015.

Fantastic! And it will be in place to showcase when the Winter Games athletes are in town. Here is hoping that this activity is the beginning of another truly sustaining legacy for the community.
Doesn’t matter if the scholarships helps keep another athlete here in the North or brings in a top level athlete from the Outside. A win either way for the developing youth ski programs and the athlete training while attending UNBC.
Poll a majority of the Nordic ski club members and they will NOT be in support of the Northern Gateway pipeline, but that didn’t stop them from accepting those dollars. The local board I am a director on, declined Enbridge’s blatant pay-offs, because of the appearance of supporting the project. What a bunch of hypocrites.
