Prince George, B.C. – A special delivery for the Salvation Army this afternoon.

The Prince George Correctional Centre (PGRCC) dropped off 350 pounds of potatoes (and another 350 for the St. Vincent de Paul Society at its location) at the Sally Ann’s donation depot on 18th Avenue.

“This is one of our many work programs we have for inmates at the Correctional Centre,” says Deputy Warden of Programs Phil Chafe.

It comes courtesy of the prisions’s gardening program which he says inmates greatly appreciate.

“The inmates really enjoy it. It’s an opportunity to give back to the community. They get some work skills and some work ethics.”

Salvation Army Captain Neil Wilkinson says they’ll have no problem taking on the perishable food items.

“The great thing about our new facility is we have a walk-in cooler so we’re able to store these as needed.”

He adds the demand for food is also ever increasing in Prince George.

“We’re serving 1,200 families each and every month. In a community of around 70,000 that’s two percent of our population dependent on the food bank.”

I am happy to learn that there are still some work programs like this at the prison.
Wonderful that local charities benefit as well.
