Prince George, B.C. – Don Zurowski wants to get Prince George growing.

The mayoral candidate made that pledge at his campaign office opening on 15th Avenue today.

“This is a community that has basically been stuck at under 80,000 people for way too long. We’ve got infrastructure, amenities, designed for many more people.”

He says the city should work with the private sector to boost PG’s population to 100,000.

“They have many employees working in the northeast, the northwest and northern Alberta. Regardless of where they work their families can reside in Prince George.”

Zurowski also told the standing room only crowd that if elected he would approach municipal spending on a “needs before wants” basis.

He said a good example of that would be the immediate need for better snow removal before the city would ever consider building a performing arts centre.

Finally Zurowski told the crowd that one of his goals is to re-instill a sense of civic pride among local residents, reminding them that that shouldn’t include being known as the province’s “pothole capital.”

Don’t tell me he is in scary sherries old campaign location?

Don’t kidd yourself, once he is in, he will approve the Performing arts centre. He also approved the DBA which was a secondary tax for a certain area of downtown. Hence we have a bunch of empty offices now. He wont be getting my vote.

One of the reasons PG has been stuck at -or below- 80,000 people for way too long is due to the pulp mills. People who don’t live in PG always comment on the smell which is usually followed by “Oh this can’t be good for you” or “I’m sure glad I don’t have to breathe this on a daily basis”! Let’s face reality… PG has toxic air and it contributes to deaths from poor air quality.

If I remember correctly, back when the pulp mills were being built there were 3 doctors who advised that they NOT be built within the “bowl” area. Well… there’s two of them right there next to the river.

When was the last time you heard a local politician say that it’s time to do something about the air quality in PG? NEVER… because you can’t beat BIG industry.

Visitors also hate the potholes (and so do PGer’s) and hate driving on the poorly maintained snow covered streets in the winters.

If it wasn’t for the University… PG’s population could be less… a lot less.

I might miss my friends a lot… but I don’t regret moving away.

Forget about population growth. Much of that is out of control of City council, unless you’re talking about sweetheart longterm tax exemptions to entice private business to move here.

I’ll be interested to see if Hall or Zurowski can address the elephant in the room — the question of why it takes a payroll of $50 Million per year to run a City of 75,000 people. And asking the hard questions, like why do we have so many firefighters making over $100K per year.

If either Hall or Zurowski can take that issue head on, they’ve got my vote. I’ll be very surprised if the issue even comes up… in which case, it doesn’t matter who you cast your vote for. It will be more of the status quo.

@newtechie – nobody misses you, hate to break the news. Have fun living the dream in 100 Mile.

If we want to “grow” PG we need to rein in the taxes for home owners. How do we do that? Simple, we have various revenue streams to draw from, most of which have never been looked at. Bylaws that need to be enforced, increasing business licensing fees, parking enforcement just to name a few. This is a city and the person at the helm needs to treat it like a city. We need to curb revenue loss starting at redundant positions in City Hall, seriously if you are not part of the solution then you’re part of the problem.

We need to adopt a Prince George First mentality, look after what is needed and then once thing stabilize we can look at what we would want. Taxes, Bylaw Enforcement, Road Maintenance, Infrastructure, Facilities then Amenities. It needs to be affordable to live here, with the recent tax grab ideas from the current council “idiots” (storm water run off tax) clearly they are and were not listening to the tax payers. The DBIA is a shear waste of money that should be used more effectively, include in that the Initiatives Prince George. The City needs to run the City not a group of individuals that haven’t got a clue what they are trying to achieve, yet they draw a pay cheque in the quest from our tax dollars. Those might be fighting words, if so, bring it. It’s about time this City grows up and quits with the village mentality, heaven knows we have enough idiots to fill a village.

Fresh start, I am looking forward to it…..

Guard your wallets. As with any business person, they want your money.

Herald Moffet once said, it will all go away in the spring. And professional I hate to break this to you but the home owner taxes are less then in other cities.
Cheers

What you need is to find someone that will polish up the City is what it really needs. The candidates every one of them think that “growing “ is all that’s needed. Well its not that simple. You have to look after what you have and if you cant do that how can you expect to grow.

I’ve said this many times when you look at the commercial sections of other cities that have lawn flowers and shrubs in front of their property it tells me something, this city looks progressive and I would like go into a business venture here it should succeed.

All, PG worries about is third avenue but look at the commercial section where all you have is asphalt for parking in front of their shops and the asphalt sidewalks throughout the city are an eyesore. Third avenue the shop keepers will not even clear the snow or scrape the old gum off the sidewalks. They want the city to do it for them. There appears to be a complete lack of pride.

The city needs to get back to basics before this big shout “we need to grow” .
Cheers

Professional, it’s a lot less headaches for our elected employees’ (and those they set the system up to employ) to tax the hell out of everyone and build their empires, than it is to run the system the way it should be.

Dragonmaster, thank you for saying how it should be said. It should almost be mandatory for elected political figures to be called what they are, employees. It is far past due that those put in public office should learn their place, they earn their wages off of taxpayers but are rarely held accountable for actions done in the name of “public service”. Perform what they are put in place to do or face disciplinary action or termination of employment. Unfortunately the reality is that we as a population are mostly afraid of our elected employees instead of the other way around.

Zurowski needs to talk to Christy -LNG-LNG-LNG-LNG. Big things are coming down the pipe.

Been around the casino in a while? Notice how well the landscaping is looking. Prince George needs more of that especially along central. First impressions mean anything to you people?
Prince George needs a night life to entice young people to invest in P.G.
More privatization, wages are far to high for city employee’s which reduces the workforce to accommodate the retarded wages paid to employees. More people working more things get accomplished which in turn creates growth.
P.G. is still an affordable place to live, unfortunately for how long? Past 10 yrs. I have seen city services double along with my land taxes increased upwards of a $100.00 each year and each year I see less services for what I pay for.
P.G. is stagnant along with the people in it. Far to much emphases is put on the town down core.
P.G. needs to focus on tourism as well as peoples needs.

I like how you think detoe44. Ever think of become the H.R. manager for P.G?

Already not liking where this is headed. Ugh. These candidates better consider comments from the public and come up with a good, decent campaign in order to get anyone off their duff to go vote! I’m not wowed by any of this and it’s quite obvious no one else is either.

Candidates, don’t make this hard! Don’t try to impress us with lame tactics that will fail, majority of people are smarter than that and won’t vote for you by campaigning about something that is inevitable. Those running had a long three years to figure out what went on with the current council we have now and all the problems they created and dished out to us!

Think’in really hard here that perhaps Lynn Hall would be a better Mayor.
Saw squat in this reporting about the PAC, except, we’ll look at it in the spring after you’re happy with snow removal, appears to be staying away from it. He talks about attracting more people here, BUT we’ve got a bigger problem underground that no one has wanted to talk about in 20 years, getting our sewer and water lines replaced, that are what 70 years old? What ya gonna do about Haldi area, are they FINALLY gonna get what the city promised them, many, many years ago?

@ maverick 1965…… I’ve noticed some fencing along 97 southbound…..
I don’t go to the casino myself, so what improvements am I not noticing ? Is the pile of last years winter sand been finally removed from Mr. Majors campground at the junction of 97 & 16 ? Usually I’m busy driving, just curious as to what I’ve missed ?

If you hold a meeting in a small room, it generally follows that you would have a **Standing room only crowd** Would be interesting to know exactly how many people actually attended this promotion.

I suppose if he held the meeting in a telephone booth, it would be reported as an **overflow** crowd.

Well let his track record not be lost in his politcal ramblings. which ever one of these candidates get in we must hold them to their promises/platform. We can’t let what green did happen again. Say one thing and then do what she wanted once elected. Who of the two is being backed by the same money that green had.. Who ever that is vote for the other one.

I’m pretty sure the Green backers would not be supporting Hall. Hall and Green did not see eye to eye on a number of issues.

We already know this years snow removal will be amazing. Having nothing to do with the winter games of course. Then he’s going to ok the PAC. To attract the 25 000 people??

Not my vote…..

Last night that casino campground was packed! That left turn out of the casino parking lot onto hwy 97 northbound is sure tricky. All the cars I see using it appear to be doing multiple s turns through it. They should put a set of lights there and remove some of those pesky curbs.

newtechie – “If it wasn’t for the University… PG’s population could be less… a lot less.”
If it wasn’t for the pulpmills, the university wouldn’t even be there, nor would most of the 75K. Too bad about the smell but this is an industry town whether we like it or not.

As far as these two candidates go, flip a coin, same end result either way.
Maverick 1965 – I agree many areas of this city should be cleaned up. The city should start in their own back yard. Drove by the
nice soccer fields today, the snow dump right next to them is now a garbage dump. Just across from that, horse stalls at the exhibition grounds have mountains of equipment, wood, seats and other crap piled up against the fence for all to see. Looks very bad. I know the city requires some businesses to block unsightly yards with solid fences, maybe they should follow their own rules in this case.

To start with, if a person has the smarts to put up his well done election signs so that voters will notice them more than his opponents, then I think he is already on the correct course.
His photo with the City in the background, speaks volumes.
Think about it voters.

I love it..”the casino campground”. I fondly remember the city council not allow camping in Walmart parking lot..but okay at the casino..

I just have to ask, what is different this time around? Leaders in PG have been wanting to grow the city for decades and yet the population stays the same. Why is their approach different this time around? Perhaps we need to learn from history here?

Not saying Zurowski isn’t the answer, but doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results sure isn’t. I think PG needs a completely new outlook.

According to a PG Citizen story a couple weeks ago, Prince George is growing. Large numbers of homeless people are moving here. Probably not what Don means.

Sorry about the Red_Blacks last night NMG.

The nomination papers for the Mayor and Councilors are now on the City Website. So are the Statements of Disclosure that are required to be filed by each candidate. So, if you want to find out more about who’s running etc; then check it out.

Furthermore you can also click on the adds on this site to get a better understanding of the candidates platform. As an example click on Lyn Hall’s add, and you will get all the information on him, including where he stands on issues, etc;

NOT TRUE PG101…. everybody misses me… but thankfully you are not one of them *whew*… *Smiles*… 100 Mile is a beautiful place to live… I’ve been there lots and have always enjoyed it.

And VestedInterest… I agree with your comment “If it wasn’t for the pulpmills, the university wouldn’t even be there, nor would most of the 75K”…

But we could also say that If it wasn’t for the pulpmills PG would have MORE THAN 75K… So “You’re dammed if you do and dammed if you don’t”…

I’d rather not breathe air filled with pulp mill emissions and Formaldehyde (found in South Fort George)…

I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE PG… grew up there and it provided me with a lot of amazing activities, friends and memories… I still don’t regret moving… but I do regret that I HAD too…

You could write a book about the volume of misinformation that gets spewed about PG air quality.

Formaldehyde was measured for several years (over 14,000 hours, several locations), mainly to evaluate the room for an MDF plant. The samples (3 hours) that Not True is referring to are known, with certainty, to have been scientifically invalid (e.g. duplicate samples where one showed extremely high and its duplicate showed zero). http://www.google.ca/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=5&ved=0CDUQFjAE&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bcairquality.ca%2Freports%2Fpdfs%2Fformaldehyde-report-08-11.pdf&ei=HaU6VMPUD8ayogSMi4G4DA&usg=AFQjCNHrzDXRXk-zzLwbmEAT7BBm2BBl5g&sig2=q8D6BaVE4cTtawznAt-k1A

Has anyone noticed a reduction in pulpmill odor over the past few years? This reminds me of the letters to the editor that continued to complain about the beehive burners three years after the last one was shut down.

BTW, 100 Mile is a great place if you don’t mind encountering snow 12 mos/yr.

Let’s see, the choice for mayor is Mr. Milquetoast or Mr. Not Too Bright? No options available for when you need to make a ‘none of the above’ vote either? Not sure what to do when I go to vote….

Zurowski I think will be a Good Mayor if he can focus on making our City a better safe place to live and work. We need to stop focusing on no Income housing ,we have more than our share . Council needs to listen to Neighbourhoods.

I actually found it to stink more frequently than the past. Not sure if this is because of the stagnate air. Good indicator is the 3 hills out by Salmon Valley if you smell it there it is still bad! You won’t notice the smell until you have had a good dose of freshhhh air for the day up north of P.G.

Your right small improvements can make a huge impact when it comes to first impressions.
