Exhibit Captures the History of Indo-Canadians in the Forest Industry
Prince George, B.C. – The history of Indo-Canadians in the forest industry is on full display at the Railway & Forestry Museum.
Curator Katherine Carlson says one of the main reasons for it is to honour Prince George’s Sikh Community which she says is chronicled in interviews displayed throughout the museum.
She says a common theme of these interviews was the challenges they faced when trying to export their academic credentials to Canada.
“One gentleman I interviewed has a Masters degree in Agriculture and when he came here he brought all his certificates to different universities but was told it would take four years to update them.”
Consequently Carlson says these men were forced to abandon their professions and instead focus on finding work in sawmills (at a time when they were much more dangerous to work in) in order to provide for their families.
She says the exhibit also traces back to the challenges they faced in the early 1900’s to help understand the early pioneering experience “because that effects one generation to the next.”
Carlson says reaction from the Indo-Canadian community to the exhibit has been positive.
“They are quite happy with it and having the story visible.”
A History of Indo-Canadians in the Forest Industry: A Journey of Challenges and Triumphs from Early Pioneers to the 1960’s and 70’s runs from now until November 22.
The exhibit has been sponsored by the Prince George Community Foundation and by the Corporate Initiatives and Multicultural Division of the Ministry of Heritage.

Will they be celebrating ‘White history in forestry’, or is that asking too much? Let me guess, ‘we always celebrate white contribution to the forest industry’ , it’s the standard response.
No that would be racist.
We can have a pride parade, but If we made a straight parade it would be discriminatory
The rotary club was all male until women complained about it being sexist
Remember kids everyone gets a ribbon for participation!!
Maybe try going through what these folk went through to become part of the same circumstances you had the great good fortune to be born into. Then we’ll celebrate you, too, just so you don’t have to whine about being ignored.
My grandpa had a hard time coming here. Defected from the German army. Walked across a couple mountain ranges and a long trip to Canada.
He was an engineer back home. But his credentials were not recognized here.
Your point krusty
Carpenter, you mention the Pride parade: Was your grandpappy gay? If not, perhaps try another argument.
Krusty is an obvious Liberal, hell bent on bending over and giving everyone a prize for mediocrity. Try going through what these people went through? My grandparents came through poverty, immigration… oh and they could use a saw as well.
But lets keep celebrating the ‘minorities’ and putting them on a pedestal….
Acknowledging the struggles of minorities is hardly placing them on a pedestal. Bitching and carping because minorities are finally achieving similar status to the majority ethnicity makes you a redneck whiner. Besides what the hell so you think Oktoberfest, St. Patrick’s Day parades, and in the USA, Columbus Day are all about? That’s right: celebrating white, European ethnicity.
Quit your belly-aching and get on with life.
Yup, Krusty is a brainwashed Lib, full of white guilt.
