Cougars Earn a Weekend Sweep Over the Vancouver Giants
Prince George, B.C. – The New Ice Age is alive and well in Prince George!
For just the third time in franchise history, the Prince George Cougars have beaten the Vancouver Giants in a back-to-back weekend double header at home. For a second consecutive night, Ty Edmonds was brilliant in goal stopping 36 of the 37 shots fired his way as the Cougars (once again) defeated the Vancouver Giants 2-1. David Soltes and Chase Witala scored third period power play goals to erase a 1-0 deficit.
Vancouver came out strong in the first period, outshooting the Cougars 17-7. Matt Bellerive got the Giants on the board near the mid-way point of the period on the power play.
The Cougars were able to keep the deficit to one goal, and played a much better second period but were still unable to solve rookie netminder Cody Porter, who was making his WHL debut. Prince George outshot the Giants 20-10, but still trailed 1-0 through 40 minutes.
Four seconds into the third period the Cougars were given their first power play of the game, and it didn’t take long for them to make the Giants pay. Joe Carvalho fed the puck across the ice to David Soltes who wired home a shot from the left point. Soltes’ sixth of the season tied the game at one.
Later in the period, the Cougars went on another power play, and grabbed the game’s final tally. Again it was Carvalho who set up the play from the right point. His point shot went wide, but bounced right back in front to Chase Witala who snuck it past Porter for his fifth of the season.
Late in the third the Giants made a strong push, but the Cougar penalty-killers, led by Ty Edmonds were outstanding. The Giants had two very late power plays, but couldn’t solve Edmonds who kept the door shut to earn his sixth victory of the season, and his fifth over his past six games.
The Cougar power play came up big going two-for-two while the penalty killers killed five in a row after allowing a goal on the first Vancouver try. The win moves the Cougars to 6-4, and gives them their first home weekend sweep of the Vancouver Giants since February 2006.
It’s also worth noting that the Prince George Cougars have won four straight games at home since December 2006.
Next up for the Cougars, a rest during the Thanksgiving long weekend before they return to action on Friday, October 17th in Seattle.

Go Cougs!
If you ain’t going to see the cats play then you are missing out.
I think in the past the effort wasn’t always there, and who could blame the guys. Empty barn, city didnt care.
They know the city does care, and the fans are energetic! they let the players know they appreciate the effort. The games this weekend were the perfect example of how the Cougars are going to win this year. Hard work and a commitment to defence. Edmonds was a rock, and they capitalized on the PP’s they got.
Next home game is the 22nd vs Brandon (Big test for this young Cougars team). Go online to Ticketmaster.ca, go into the Box office, or even call Ticketmaster.
The guys deserve our support.
