Bryan Mix- Making the Leap

Friday, October 24, 2014 @ 9:30 AM

IMG_1524[1]Prince George, B.C. – The name Bryan Mix is a familiar one in Prince George.  He had been the secretary Treasurer for  School District 57 for 24 years before retiring in 2013.

He says during  his time  with the School District,  he  worked with many  politicians, but could not get  directly involved, “Local government is the right place for me,  I think  my resume covers most of the basics that will come to the council  table.”  At the same time,  Mix says he will be the bulldog for good governance.

Growing  the population  of Prince George is an issue he  knows too well.  During his years  with the School District , two dozen  schools had to be closed because of declining  student population.  Over the years more than 7 thousand  students left the system.

Mix says improving  the population means  improving the quality of life for people to bring people to the community.  Issues such as  affordable minor hockey,  a thriving arts  community,  affordable housing for  all, “We have to get out there and say Prince George offers this quality of life, and  there’s a cost for that,  but we have to get out and do it.”

One thing is certain, he knows fiscal responsibility.

Mix says  the location of the new Police station  is  not  the spot he would have chosen “The spot  is very valuable real estate in the downtown, and  while the safety of our residents is paramount, I think  the RCMP building should have been in a different location.”

On the  issue of the Performing Arts Centre, he says it’s a sit on the fence issue well aware that  regardless of a position, someone will be  unhappy.  “The people in the Arts Community are under represented in this town.  Before the end of the year  the City is supposed to have a site and plans, but  if you’re going to  the federal government you can’t  get an answer if you don’t show them ‘what’  you want to build.”    He says the Performing Arts centre would have to be  something  that will  satisfy the need for a performing arts centre,  not a taj mahal  that some may want.

“I say needs  versus wants,  at $50 million dollars I am not in, but it’s needs versus wants.”

He says the business case for a PAC, which includes the annual operating costs and  funding sources, has to be put forward “That will determine if you get a facility like that.”

Downtown is a real issue, has been for  the last 7  elections  he says it is  everyone’s responsibility to understand why  the homeless are there and  what can be  done to  assist them.

Good question why do we have so many so called homeless in P.G. could it be we provide so many services? People want to provide more and more those bleeding hearts then drive to their homes out in the burbs or the country and leave the people living in the bowl to deal with the problems. I am sick of it and will not vote for anyone who will use the homeless as a stepping stone to get elected. On a happier note Bryan you did well.

Didn’t get a chance to listen in this morning but will listen tonight. Just by reading the article above, this is one person that I am going to put on my “could be a good candidate to vote for” list. I have already made up my mind that I will vote for very few incumbents, if any, and I am definitely not voting for the gang of five that have been running city hall for the past year. They seem to blame the Green gang for all the problems we have in our city when they controlled the vote. None of them seem to think they have one bit of blame in this most dysfunctional council we have ever seen in this community. Right now they are in the process of approving every increase in every department and giving IPG to do more of the same. Time for the councilors to put on some big boy panties and say no. Actions speak louder than words and their words right now are meaningless based on their past actions.

Bitter asks the right question. why do we have so many homeless in in. PG. I have heard there have been lots of people coming from out of town. They have no job or place to live. But they know there’s lots of hand out here.
We don’t need more buildings like the one on Queensway and 17th. A total failure. Just free housing for drug addicts.
As for PAC. lets pave the roads first. and fix the infrastructure.

oneup482 – Just remember that Lyn Hall was also on the council and was part of the gang including giving an increase IPG (Monday’s budget) as well as approving a “snow report” – he never took a stand on anything!
Bryan never presented a “needs budget” as secretary-treasurer for the School district even though it was mentioned more than once during his years.

oldman1 –> great observation on Bryan Mix’s performance as the protector (tongue in cheek) of the ‘taxpayer’s purse’ while the secretary-treasurer for the School district. Bryan was always quick to go along with the priorities of the powerful and really didn’t end up serving the community well. Take a look at the Heather Park Middle School boondoggle. Building an over-sized screw-up of a middle school plan only to convert it to an elementary school and close other elementary schools in the neighbourhood within a few years. Those are exactly the type of old-school planning and fiscal responsibility skills the City does NOT need!!!

pelham; The building on Queensway is called the Friendship Lodge. The building is owned by the taxpayers, we are the landlords so why are we allowing drug use in our building?

HA! – who made this up:

‘One thing is certain, he knows fiscal responsibility’

He was the secretary treasurer when they shut down all those school due to lack of financial planning for many previous years…..
