Ulch Tries Again for Seat on Council
Prince George, B.C.- Harris (Harry ) Ulch is taking another shot at landing a seat on Prince George City Council.
This is the third time Ulch is going after a seat on Council. “I care, I think politics runs in the family, my mother tried to be a member of parliament one time, my sister tried to by mayor of the North Shore of Lake Huron in Ontario, I think it’s in the blood”.
A retired conductor with BC Rail, he figures he will need about 5600 votes to reach his goal.
He is opposed to the storm water utility, which he calls a tax, “I don’t support that at all, so you need me to hold the line on taxes.” He says taxes should be kept to the cost of living.
“Since 2008 the utility bill has doubled, and now you’re looking at taxing you for the rainwater that rolls off your roof. If you’re not going to hold the line, the sky’s the limit.”
On the Performing Arts Centre, he says he would back the project if the Federal and Provincial Government came to the table. He says the City’s share should be limited to the land and the servicing of the land. “Hopefully they can bring in enough shows to make the Performing Arts pays its way”. He says the City may have to “shore up” some of the costs of the building if the PAC fails to meet it’s financial needs.
He admits pumping a subsidy ($600 to $800 thousand a year) into the PAC would eat up his plan to keep taxes at the cost of living.
On the issues of snow removal, he says he towed numerous people who couldn’t get off the side streets, “The equipment has to be out of the barn and out of the yard to remove the snow.” He says it was his understanding the debacle of last year was partly because of concerns over a strike and management decided “to keep the equipment in the barn.” He also doesn’t believe all the equipment needs to be replaced “I’ve seen older equipment working in the bush”.
On Boundary Road, the new roadway which links highways 16 east and 97, he says “The city has done a poor, poor job on showing signs how to get around this city, You know, I see transport trucks going down Victoria Street , when they could be using Boundary Road.”
