Prince George, B.C. – One of the glaring omissions in the past three-year term at City Hall has been the lack of a flow of information to the citizens of Prince George.

Virtually every candidate in the just-concluded election campaign, as well as editorialists and other purveyors of political opinion spoke of the glaring lack of transparency, the refusal of an elected official to respond to valid questions posed by members of the media, the inability of elected members of council to pursue the gathering of information from city employees.

After the other scribes had moved on I asked mayor-elect Lyn Hall whether there will be changes so that the media, on behalf of the people of the city, will be able to more easily get information about the peoples’ business. Hall says “absolutely because one of the things in my different style of leadership is more of a connection as well to the media, and you guys in the media having more access, not just to the mayor but to all of council.”

“I plan on doing things with Over The Edge up at UNBC and all of the radio stations and every media outlet. That’s the way we get our message out, we need to get to the media to get the message out to the community so by all means you’ll see a greater level of involvement, absolutely.”

Lyn Hall has no leadership style. He showed that on the school board.

I guess the 50 million dollar elephant in the room is safe for 4 years.

Can we get those stupid signs down now!

We’ll see how long he feels that way as soon as he starts getting some criticism and called out on some issues people don’t agree with.

Number one agenda get rid of the Code of Conduct so council can talk to admin

I would like to see SAFE healthy neighbourhoods and Council listening to the tax payers in them and our downtown inviting and not so many social issues.

Uh, I would like to see more POSITIVE comments from the majority of the people that post on here! The people have spoken. Majority rules. Get over it, and get on with it! If you think you can do a better job of things, start planning to run in the next election. If you’ve got complaints or concerns, take them to the elected officials instead of whining anonymously on here! We ALL should and can do our part to make this City a better place to live in.

So glad to see the majority made the right choices in this town. I wish the new council well.
Just please be careful of special interest groups lobbying for stuff we can’t afford and don’t need.
Could you at least get a water main going out to Haldi Road?

Congrats PG, I think you made the right choice for mayor.

As for council, I think it will definitely have a different feel to it. I could be wrong, but I get the sense that there is a group of people here that will be able to work together to get things done. I like the fact that there are some new faces on council and also that some experience remains. That is important.

I think there will be less flash and glitz with this group, but more overall substance. I think that will translate into more actually getting done and it getting done in a way that represents the wishes of the people.

I will be definitely be interested in watching from afar to see how it all unfolds.

Grizzly 2 – how about a sewer main in Hart Highlands without kicking the residents of the subdivision with highcosts!

With four years of Council and Administration being focused on solving problems, and doing the business of the City I see a great opportunity for moving this City forward.

Once we get the Winter Games out of the way, we can settle down to do what ever it takes to turn this City around.

We need a serious look at Administration, and how they spend our money. Especially when is comes to buying and selling land. There are many areas that need to be improved, not the least of which is how contractors get permits etc; We need to streamline City Hall, and drag it kicking and screaming into the 21st century. We need to be leaders in customer service, not followers.

Tax, utility, and user fee’s need to be held in check. We need to find innovative ways to reduce costs.

If this means some Senior Managers have to go, then so be it. We need to make changes sooner rather than later. Hiring should be focused on local people first and foremost. We need to stop importing people to work here. We have plenty of qualified people.

Palopu, I don’t think this will be a taxpayer friendly Mayor and council, but time will tell.

I see almost everyone who got campaign contributions from CUPE got elected. It should be an interesting negotiation when the time comes.

Great new day for PG, now we can really get down to make this place the best place to live, work and play

Nice picture, especially of Janet Bigelow, CUPE 1048 (CPG)President, in the background. She must be feeling much less stressed now with Hall in office to do her bidding. Wonder if she will be back to work Monday, or still be milking us taxpayers on her unstated medical leave. Looks healthy enough to be working to me.

Well I’m glad I was wrong seems the good citizens of PG got out the ballot. And I see that Pal will not have to pull out his remaining hair. Looks like a couple of the evil ones Stoltz and Wilbur will be leaving City Hall. You guys sure gave that Skakun a boost and I wish him well.
Happy four years

Janeis not paid by the taxpayers. Get your facts straight.
Cheers

Grizzly do you really think Haldi wants these costs? Not likely.

When amalgamation happened the province gave the city just over $6 million .

Can anyone account for it from city hall? NO. With todays dollar it would be almost double that amount.

I believe they still want to leave the city. Haldi neighbourhood have gotten very little from this city in the 35+ years since they joined. I am sure the figures from city hall will conveniently flow in if they do leave the city,,,,lol

Congratulations to all in their wins and to those that did not make it.

For those that did not make it. Hopefully the citizens will still hear from you in the council chambers. We still need you in this city to watch over council and act on behalf of the people who may have voted for you. Continue to show you can be leaders in your community and you care for your community if this is why you ran.

Palopu – check out the web site for the Auditor General for Local Government (aglg.ca). They provide performance audits to assist administration in being more accountable to their community (and at no charge).

Congratulations to the new mayor and council, and also to the ones who did not make the cut. You are all very brave for putting your time and effort in to work for this wonderful city we live in.

There should be no cost to Haldi Rd residents to get water nor should there be costs to new subdivs. We want people to move here yet we charge them an arm and a leg or two. Developers of new subdivisions should be on the hook, but no, digs in to the profits.
Frustrating!

Please explain what looks have to do with ones reasons for medical leave and why it’s any of your business why she is on medical leave.

Not only should it be free it was promised by the city when the city talked Haldi in amalgamating. The taxes in Haldi over the last 40 years reflected full service. If there was a huge cost it, would be better to join regional district and 45% tax savings.

Correct me if I am wrong..Did Lyn Hall not tell a caller he would be contacting the group? He promised with his last interview with Meisner he would call the day after election day did he not?

Dragonmaster, re: your comment “Please explain what looks have to do with ones reasons for medical leave and why it’s any of your business why she is on medical leave.”

How about the fact that she is on the public payroll and if she is capable of attending at the Civic Centre (and probably for several hours) to support her new best buddy then she should probably be able to go to City Hall and DO HER JOB!! As far as I am concerned, as a taxpayer, that makes this my business!

We have far too many bleeding hearts like you who defend improper use of public dollars and ineffective poor work habits of our public sector workers. Sadly, there is far more truth to the statement “Overpaid and Underworked” than people like you are willing to admit. Hope you like paying more and more and more in taxes to provide even higher wages and benefits to those that are already more than adequately compensated.

You seem to think that you are an expert on everything Dragonmaster, so please in your infinite wisdom, please tell me when enough is enough?!?!

“How about the fact that she is on the public payroll and if she is capable of attending at the Civic Centre (and probably for several hours) to support her new best buddy then she should probably be able to go to City Hall and DO HER JOB!!”

===================

Are you a medical doctor or do you just play one on the Internet?

Ha ha ha ….no. But he did stay at a Holiday Inn Expres last night.

Apparently Hall is familiar with UNBC student publication “Over The Edge”. What programs her daughter(s) attending in UNBC? I don’t know how much he is familiar with the mismanagement issues there, negatively affecting the UNBC enrollments, and especially the case reported of harassment complaint by a female student against a professor in Computer Science in UNBC or the other publicized complaint against a professor in History program there.

Considering that PG has its TV news program Hall can appear monthly and give a state of city address to the general public. Now that PG elected Hall as mayor in the City Hall, folks need to move on and focus on other issues and upcoming federal election.

Retired02; What does the acronym CUPE stand for?

ibear. I have checked out the website of the Provincial Auditor for Municipalities, and it seemed to me that their focus would be to ensure that the City is correctly collecting the money that is due to the Government.

This tells me that they are more interested in getting their money, than they are with the City spending my money. I intend to check it out further, and may actually phone them and ask them what could be accomplished by doing an audit on the City of Prince George, and who should initiate it.

Hart Guy. The picture above was taken at the Prince George Golf and Curling Club. The time would be sometime around 9pm. Im sure that there is no rule that states people on sick leave have to stay in their house 24/7, however if I’m wrong, please let me know.

Right. Does anyone think CKPG would do something like a monthly council show? Come on, they had Kinsley on the election results show and I swear he just sat there next to the anchor lady and said nothing. Had a book that remained on the same page all night. All he did was smile and nod. That results show was the most boring results show EVER so I can just imagine how they’d do a monthly council show haha. 250 has the best political coverage.

Colin looked like he had fallen asleep under a sun lamp.

Palopu, it’s very apparent to me that we have had very different upbringings.

When I was being raised, if I or any of my siblings tried to pull the “oh, I don’t feel good, I think I’m too sick to go to school today” routine, our Mom would send us off to bed, for the day! As far as she was concerned, if we were too sick to go to school, then we were too sick to watch TV, too sick to play with toys, too sick to go out in the yard and too sick to call our friends! We were to stay in bed and get some rest. After all, sick people need their rest, don’t they??

I am so thankful for the lessons that my Mom taught me! Work hard at earning an honest days pay for an honest days work, act with integrity, be truthful, take nothing for granted, do unto others as you would want them to do unto you, and be respectful to name a few! Thanks Mom!!

Obviously your Mom let you do whatever you wanted when you decided that you were sick! Perhaps that’s why you think that it’s ok for a public sector worker who is too sick to go to work yet is able to spend the evening at the Curling Rink, sucking up to her new best buddy!!

Sucking up, or should that read “sick”ing up!!

I can only imagine that Janet won’t be at work tomorrow morning. After all, spending the evening at the curling rink socializing and sipping on a drink is hard work and it will surely have left her far too ill, exhausted and unable to go to work! Thankfully she can rest easy tomorrow in the knowledge that her paycheque will still arrive on payday!!

Palopu. Hart guy is mad at almost everyone who is not willing to work for free. I think the most appropriate place for hart guy would be someplace child labour or maybe china or someplace in a third world country. His parent did not even teach him how we got this far in any work conditions. To pick apart a photo should tell you of his mentality. But he is a total misfit for this region. My guess is he hates worksafe BC as well. Just sayin don’t waist your time with this guy.

@8, I’m not at all mad at those that are not willing to work for free. I don’t work for free and I don’t think that anyone else should.

HOWEVER, I am sick and tired of paying never ending increases in taxes at all levels, to support a bloated, underworked and overpaid public sector that no longer works for us, but demands that we work harder and pay more to support them!!

8, if you only had a clue, you would know that our local municipal employees, including Bigelow, are some of the highest paid in the Province!

8, if you only had a clue, you would know that the largest growing segment of our working population is civil servants! Even in times of economic pullback, the Public Sector keeps growing and growing and growing!

8, if you only had a clue, you would realize that in spite of the rhetoric from our Public Sector Unions, our Public Sector Employees are extremely well compensated for the amount of work that they do!

8, if you only had a clue, you would realize that our economy now consists largely of two groups, the have’s and the have not’s! The haves if you haven’t figured it out are the Public Sector workers and the have not’s are the rest of us!

8, if you only had a clue, you would realize that it’s the have not’s in our economy that have to produce enough to support themselves and the rest of the economy!

8, if you only had a clue, you would realize that the Public Sector and Big Labour are quite worried about the fact that the average Canadian Taxpayer is becoming more and more informed and aware of the divide that exists between Public and Private Sector wage and benefits packages, and we the average Taxpayer are not at all happy!

8, if you only had a clue, you would have read many of the numerous posts and links that have been posted here providing information regarding these matters and you would be as fed up as me and many, many others.

8, if you only had a clue, you would realize that you are paying taxes to provide wages to people that take sick or medical leave, yet don’t appear to be very sick!

Oh 8, if you only had a clue!!
