Friday Free for All – Nov. 28th

Thursday, November 27, 2014 @ 11:59 PM

It has been an interesting week.

We’ve had a couple of snowfalls which put  the City  crews into full  snow removal operation mode,

hundreds of  travelers  had their  plans  cancelled or  altered because of an  equipment breakdown at the  Prince George Airport,  and  we are just days away from  the  swearing in  ceremony for a new Mayor and council.

So, what  were the issues which touched a chord with  you?

It is time for the Friday Free for All.

You pick the topic,  but, as always,  please  obey the three simple rules:

Keep it clean

Keep it Legal

No Bullying!

First. For no particular reason.

Driving in tonight I shook my head at how many drivers absolutely sucked at driving in winter conditions. Yes we got a buttload of snow, yes it was very windy and lots of blowing snow and yes some of the city roads sucked but the driving ability of many drivers makes me wonder how in the hell they got a drivers license.

Riding down the yellow centre line, straddling both lanes, driving at 25 km/hr on the bypass and driving with the windshield partly cleared. I am amazed that there weren’t more accidents then there was reported. Yes I drive a 4×4 and I have good winter tires on and no I was not speeding nor was I tailgating and I never once had to put my truck in four by four. However many drivers definitely were tailgating me and I was passed by more than one aggressive/impatient driver which was balanced by the fact that many more drivers were straddling the lanes, driving way too slow and driving with obscured vision. The afore mentioned drivers were more than likely responsible for a fair share of reported accidents today.

It’s getting scarier to drive on the roads more than ever now.

When I looked out my front window Thursday as I was preparing to go out and shovel snow, I couldn’t believe my eyes. The neighbour had already come over with his snow blower and cleared the driveway! What a wonderful community we live in – thank you to all who look after each other.

lbear: Nice! But then you really should reciprocate or pay him something for his time and effort.
I have been doing four neighbours for years and this year a couple of them actually asked to hire me for it. It is much appreciated and makes it much more worthwhile, expense wise.
Stay warm everyone and safe!

“I have been doing four neighbours for years and this year a couple of them actually asked to hire me for it. ”

Must resist commenting…. :)

Yes Dearth, the state of our drivers is something else. I lost count of the number driving with their lights off the past couple of days -even well past dusk!, but my favourite driver has to be that special doofus who straddles the white line on the Hart while doing 40. Where is a cop when they’re needed?

Taxes:

1. I just noticed on my receipt after filling up with gas at Super Store, that included in the total, i paid 5% GST? Doesn’t the price of a litre of fuel already include all applicable government taxes, like 40% of the total cost?

2. My son, who lives in the rural, just got his 500 gal propane tank filled up and his receipt shows $—- for CARBON TAX. This is a fuel use for home heating and nothing to do with pollution.

Thanks

I see someone spent a ton of money putting up fence posts all around the mothballed hotel beside the library. 2×4’s embedded in precast bases etc., behind the blue wire rental fences. What’s the deal here I wonder….

Nothing sinister really; they’re making room for parking for the Winter Games.

Don’t worry Give more, I’ve already offered to return the favour.

I couldn’t resist axman…..if I do a good turn for someone, I do it because I want to, not because I EXPECT something in return. On the other hand if someone clears my driveway without me asking, and me being perfectly capable of doing it myself, I hardly feel obligated to him.

Give more, you have good samaritanship all wrong, sheesh.

Tactdog c02 is not pollution. It is an inert, colorless, miniscule part of the atmosphere essential for life. The tax is just a scamming money grab.

Folks be careful driving the area of the new angle parking beside the hospital as the curbs stick out into the road way and cannot be seen with the snow. That area now belongs to the hospital or Northern Health. Any damage or complaints direct to them.

I was making a joke at the “…doing four neighbours for years…” part.

Please, please, please don’t give in to the American way of shopping today. I can’t stand that all the flyers that come with the newspaper or in the mail all have Black Friday specials. We are not American and our culture shouldn’t be built around consumerism.

All the plows must be still up on the Hart.. only saw one dntn last nite and none in College Heights as I drove by.

Thank god for YRB keeping the main arteries clear. City plows? well looking outside says it all. Our cities equipment aren’t equipped to deal with this amount of snow “7.5 centimeters before plowing” that has stupid written all over it. Plowing compacted snow requires chains or winter radial tires to efficiently get the job done.
Who is Gaal related to?
Can’t wait for the new chief and counsel

Plows were working on Ospika North, and some of the residential streets around Qunison School yesterday. Could be because this area has garbage pick up to-day.

In any event they disappeared around noon.

I have to laugh at all these idiots that have 4 wheel drive but never use it. It’s a joke to see them spinning out at every intersection and icing it up for everyone else. They should be fined.

City not interseted in hearing about residents pushing their snow out onto city proerty….
just saying

have a great weekend everyone. Be safe out there :)

Hey Westgate getting plowed right now. Hats off to the pigtailed blond on the loader, she is a demon on that thing.

Some people expect their streets to be plowed the day it snows I guess.

“Some people expect their streets to be plowed the day it snows I guess.”

In my opinion, the main arteries should be plowed while it’s snowing and after it has snowed.

Good morning all you guys u p in George. Its a balmy 6c here in Abby this am . It rained so hard last night I thought the Fraser would be at my front door this morning. At least I wont have to shovel it.

Had a busy week with Sinclair retiring and Eckman being elected as secretary in the BC Fed. Even Pal got his two bits in the debate. He ‘s so busy with City Hall I guess he hasn’t herd of BIG Oil, Big Timber or Big Loblaws that steals the groceries out of the mouths of the poor.

The problem is if we don’t get a handle on our capitalist we are going to end up a third world country. And don’t confuse “capitalists” with “free enterprise” there is a world of difference.

And then there was the post by this person that told us that the Lower Mainland was full of these awful condescending people all obsessed with themselves. Well what about all those anti union guys that live in PG. What would one call them? You always hear that people like living in PG because of all the warm friendly people?

Well I know you guys are busy shovelling snow this am so all not bore you any longer.
Cheers

There is not enough equipment in all of Prince George to keep all the major roads and downtown clear of snow while it is actually snowing, and for anyone to advocate for this…well lets just say I have a really nice bridge for sale!
As far as I could tell when I went by the City works yard yesterday every piece of snow removal equipment was out of the yard, so I’m assuming the equipment was out in the city moving snow!
Thankfully we didn’t get the wet snow / deep freeze pattern that had been predicted or things would really be ugly out there now so be patient and let these guys do their jobs!

It isn’t clever. It isn’t even trolling; it is a cry for attention. I hope I can find something to keep myself busy when I am retired, other than littering a website with my random thoughts.

Downtown should not be a priority. 5th / 4th into downtown should be but that’s about it.

Hats off to city snow removal. Doing a great job. Many Thanks

GST is included in the taxes but what this does is for those who are filling up for a business it is simple for the accountant/bookkeeper to calculate the GST when it is printed on the receipt

Price of oil drops a ton…….gas prices not so much! Tired of being gouged!

Geez-to the young man that was out of control at the 18th ave & bypass intersection this morning–did you learn anything after the 360, aly oop and almost hit the light standard. Time to slow down, do you think??
Everyone else was holding their breath during your performance!!

Retired 02–bored? Go shopping!!

I heard Shari’s crew is calling for the nominations but not getting much traction. I just wonder why?

I too had a call from a Shari Green canvasser. I almost choked when she said Shari is experienced at making tough decisions. It won’t be a tough decision to not mark her name on the ballot.

Retired 02, you should ignore the loutish comments from ntkr14 and Jimmy Hughes. You have as much right as anyone else to comment.

“Price of oil drops a ton…….gas prices not so much! Tired of being gouged!”

I’m talkin’ out of my a$$ on this one but perhaps the Feds are responsible for this. If gas prices continue to fall, their golden calf revenue stream drops. They can’t have that. Just sayin’.

@cutbanks55? What was loutish about responding to his daily attempt at trolling? Are you new here, or do you think it is personable of him to log on for no-other reason than to disparage PG and its residents? Not to mention, it being a painful read at the best of times, due to the grade school grammar mistakes.

I enjoy your comments Retired 02.
Much more than those posted by some Ezra Levant wannabes.
Speaking of Levant, it didn’t break my heart that his “mouth” has set him back $80,000.

Karrman at least Sun News provides the other side of the story that you will not see from the media party of CTV, GLOBAL and taxpayer funded CBC. Loved watching Suzuki flip out to the police on Burnaby mtn, then run off to his multi million dollar home to count his money while the peons get arrested. How come he charges money to save the world and also does not seem to worry much sea level rise which he rants about since he lives in a multi million dollor home on the water front.

Apparently the out-going school board has granted principals an extra 5 days of holidays this year for all the “extra” stuff they did during the teachers’ strike. One principal told me that they were bored out of their skull with nothing to do.

We lived in PG so long I guess it has become part of my life. And I am not bored just likr to talk to you guys. And thanks to those that have a sence of humor and dont find me boring.

I guess the movers and shakers have a differnt point of view. I guess we should be thankfull that they have time in their husy lives for their comments
Cheers

PLEASE, Comment! I’m waiting for a real good laugh.

Only one thing on my mind today. Joggers, STAY OUT OF THE TRAVELED PORTION OF THE ROADWAY!
As for you cyclists, take the darn bus!

The poor grammar is closely followed by the back of the union hall take on economics. Does he not know that pension plans are among the biggest investors in these large companies and if they did not make a profit and pay dividends that he would be dumpster diving to supplement the meagre pension he would then be getting if the pension plans just left the money gathering dust in the bank.

Like the teachers and professors protesting at the KM pipeline test site in Burnaby- their pension plans have close to a billion invested in Alberta oil sand companies, while keep warm with polar fleece jackets made from plastic that comes from oil, Clueless!!!

Retired 02, I’d really be interested to know what pension plans you are currently receiving income from??

I know, heck we all know that you hate the big bad corporations and the big bad profits of the big bad corporations, but are you aware of the assets currently being held in the pension plans that you benefit from?

Canada Pension Plan held assets worth $244.4 BILLION as of September 30, 2014. Of these funds, 8.5% is held in Canadian Equities, 5.7% in Emerging Market Equities, 34.5% in Foreign Developed Market Equities. 11.6% in Real Estate, 6.1% in Infrastructure, 28.4% in Bond and Money Market Securities and 5.2% in Other Debt.

Retired 02, in case you aren’t aware, Equities are better known as Stocks, as in Shares, as in Shares in Corporations, as in Shares in Corporations which represent partial ownership in Corporations!!

So, Retired 02, you are undoubtedly living off of the avails of successful corporations! Remember corporations?? Those big bad capitalistic corporations??

Shame on you Retired 02, Shame on you!!

Cheers!!

P.S. – if you tell me what other pensions you receive, because I’m such a nice guy, I’ll do some more research and I’ll let you know what they invest in!

Hmmm, Sparrow, great minds think alike ;-)

Must have hit post a few seconds ahead of you:)

I just can’t believe how utterly clueless some people are on how pensions work. Where do they think the difference between the amount they contributed and the amount paid out till they take the dirt nap comes from. Santa? Tooth fairy? Jim Sinclair?

As an aside I am currently kicking the tires on shares of one of those big bad Alberta oil patch companies. I might just dive in if it looks like they have enough free cash flow to maintain current divedend amounts. It makes for pretty attractive yields(just under9%) because of reduced sp . Or I could open an 1% savings account at a local credit union-NOT.

And I love how some people on O250 speak as though they have experience working as an actuary for a pension fund or as an economist for the IMF ;)

If one sees names like Sun Oil or Syncrude as part of the holdings of a pension fund on does not have to be an actuary to deduce they are more than likely invested in Fort Mac.

Further one does not have to be Jim Benning or Wally Buono to know that your teams SUCK:) Red/Blacks??? what is up with that?

DRIVING AND ROADS AGAIN— Someday there is going to be a horrible accident at 5th and Spruceland. There are truckers that don’t give a whit if the light has turned!!! The fellow I saw had time to stop, but didn’t. I was behind him; but couldn’t see the company name, or I would fink on him.

Ntkr14. I see logging trucks/ chip trucksrunning red lights a couple times a week while on my way to,work. They are cocky and know they will walk away from any accident so feel fine running the lights. Professional drivers is hilarious. There is nothing professional about the way some of them drive

LOL! Well the REDBLACKS did sort of suck on the field this year I’ll give you that. Loved the games though. Awesome stadium, great downtown location and a fantastic atmosphere. The return of the CFL and that entire re-development has been a great addition to the city IMHO.

The Sens are playing well and hey, who can complain about NHL ticket prices that let you actually take your kid to a game without going into debt?

Went to my first 67’s game last week as well. It was good, though not like the Cougars were back in the day (in fairness, not many junior teams can match that). Next time I might bust out the old Cats jersey and see what sort of looks I get, ha ha.

“I hope I can find something to keep myself busy when I am retired, other than littering a website with my random thoughts.”

You have got to be kidding us?

“@cutbanks55? What was loutish about responding to his daily attempt at trolling? So Harper appointed a woman to the Supreme Court that even the opposition has to admit is a good pick for the job, and the female NDP justice critic commented – “at least he picked a woman with brains.” Seems to me if a Conservative male politician made a remark like that he’d be raked over the coals and the NDP would be screaming for his resignation – or at least a week of sensitivity training. Guess it’s okay to be dismissive when you’re always fighting for truth justice and the socialist way.

Dragon: “Speaking of trolls!”

Dragon, 95% of the posters on this site are probably trolls under your defintion, which is “posts things that I don’t like”.

Professional Driver hahaha..when it comes to most of the so called professional drivers that I see on a daily basis around town that term is LAUGHABLE on a regular basis I see these so called Professionals running the light at 5th and Central. Just yesterday I was sitting at the lights eastbound next to the turning lane. The left turn arrow went green, the car beside me started to go…and then a loaded logging truck flew through the light southbound. Had the person waiting to turn north onto the highway been just a second quicker hitting the gas she would have been a goner right there in front of me! this wasn’t the first close call I have seen there. It happens all the time!

ntkr14/P Val

Regardless of circumstances if an accident happens it won’t be the so called professional drivers fault. Long list of excuses ready to go at the drop of a hat. It was the four wheelers fault. It’s YRB’s fault. There are three completely different colored lights, it’s SO hard to remember which one follows amber. Ad Infinitum.

Yeah it’s gotta be tough being within that top 5% of know it all’s. I have heard it is lonely at the top J.B need a friend ?

Those newer type bright headlights are sure dangerous. Cannot see past them, blinded. Anyone else notice.

Just wondering, as we get close to Christmas, what ‘gifts’ did Ms. Green bestow on her crowd at city hall at the taxpayers expense. Perhaps an extended contract or two, or maybe a nice ‘bonus’ for their support? HO HO HO, the outgoing mayor plays Santa at our expense?

So you want to know my pension portfolio. CPP, OAS and then the government tops it off at $1700.00. So as long as the government taxes the shit out of you rich guys I’ll be OK.

Well yeah my grammar is kind of shity but then I didn’t make it through high school like the rich kids I had to go to work to earn a living but I can generally get my ideas across. What do you think?
Cheers

That is not a very nice thing to say about your gramma

Yes, seamut, a son had them for awhile. Until he almost hit a moose; and realized that they weren’t as good as he thought.

Retired 02 – I would love to know your secret on how you can afford to live in Abbotsford on $1700 a month?

Just got a call from one of Shari Green’s supporters. Instead of a gracious, thank you for your time, when. I said I wasn’t voting for Ms. Green, I got a five minute debate about the whole Haldi Road mess.
I asked how much the lawsuit cost and how many potholes he thinks we could have filled with that money.
His retort was How much money has been wasted defending Mr. Skakun….I said I wasn’t aware Mr. Skakun was running for the federal nomination.
If I hadn’t already made up my mind about voting, I would absolutely NOT vote for her after this conversation.

Travelling North towards Bear Lake, after some close calls with semi’s I started counting, 17 semi’s, log, chip whatever 12 of them were either on the centre line or over. Scary indeed.

Acrider – wait until they start blinding you with highbeams and throwing ball bearings at you. That’s the REAL professionals!

Any thoughts on why about 10% of the FN aren’t complying with the FNFDA?
Locally the Talka FN is one.

Imfrank, if they don’t want to open their books it’s because something is wrong with them. I like the idea of stopping the funding if they continue to refuse to open up their books.

Drive onto any reserve and it’s easy to find the Chiefs house. Nicest house surrounded by brand new vehicles and toys while the rest of the reserve lives in squalor. How can they do that to people living 100 feet away.

” I got a five minute debate about the whole Haldi Road mess.”

Interesting Daisy Bee. And how would that be related to federal issues….ohhh…except that she has the same backers as she had in her municipal election…oh ya…but she didn’t know her campaign manager before..oh … and she is not a good close friend of you know who….

Tell us more of that conversation..

Takla FN is one of the most remote First Nations in BC. The challenges and obstacles of living on their reservation are enormous. Three hundred years ago Takla would have been considered paradise (in fact it still is) – beautiful scenery, lakes with plentiful fish and surrounding forests of wood and wildlife.
Today the young people are lured to the towns and cities, and the government and resource contractors seem to have taken away the rights of the Takla people.
Please don’t think I am excusing the Takla people for their actions, but the current situation so closely resembles what happened when white men came to North America and exploited the aboriginals. Alcohol was introduced, and eventually they were assigned to reserves.
The Takla people are gentle but troubled souls, and it is hard to find qualified people who want to live so remotely. That is why their books aren’t ready yet.
P Val, your statements are uninformed and offensive.

IBear,
The Takla FN office is in Pr George, where they have accounting staff and access to many outside accounting services.
Having expertise in a remote location is not the issue here.
The Govt and resource industries have played a big part in the past supporting the development of the Takla FN.
When the all weather logging road was built in the 90s, the local FN where given a priority for jobs and as upstart contractors. Some were very sucessful, many were not.
With the all weather road did come the problems of town access, drugs alcohol, but also the benefits.
A new store and hotel were built. Transfer station, water and sewer, houses, nurses and police station.
These and other remote FN have benefitted by both govt and industry funding and therefore, in my opinion, should be transparent to where this funding is being spent.
At the minimum, be transparent to their own members, which in many cases isn’t happening.

I have driven on reserves and the Chief’s house is not always the nicest house. There are Bands where Chief and Council claw back wages when funding is tight. Believe Indian Affairs try to work with Bands where as Ibear notes, qualified people are hard to keep in remote locales. How does one help the Aboriginal people, the youth to want to responsibly manage their finances and affairs without taking away their rights and self governing? As important, is having them within the community and as contributing members of Canada at large. We search the globe for employees; if you’ve ever worked with some of the Aboriginals, they can be some of the most dedicated and hardest workers you will find. I do agree though that somehow when they are awarded significant amounts of money, it is in their best interest to have professional or independent management and plan to benefit all Band members. There will always be those who will try to exploit anyone who comes in to money and has no experience in handling it. Difficult situation that will take more than a generation or two to get on the right path.

ImFrank is very factual and agree that funding to the magnitude FN receive, records should be transparent to its members as well, public. There are many bands that welcome consult and guidance. There are those where a minority group mismanage to their own benefit. Not sure how to protect or identify where help should step in? without alienating those who are capable.
