Radio Ratings In

Monday, December 1, 2014 @ 3:55 AM

Prince George, B.C.  – Generally if you mention the audience of one medium or the other you are met with a blank look, mostly because there is a reluctance to reveal just what your audience is, translation, just how many people are either reading or listening to you.

In days gone by the Bureau of Broadcast Measurement, (BBM as it was known for radio and TV)  was the bible for broadcaster.  It  determined which station was number one, and  as a result of that audience, which station would be receiving the largest share of revenue from the sponsors. It also was a measuring stick for the Radio and TV stations to see just how their on-air personalities were performing.

Things have changed,  and while the numbers are still being produced ( now by Numeris)  your chance of having a look see as to who is reading the paper and how many, or how many people are tuning into a radio station  is considered  off limits to  the public.  Perhaps in part because of the new age of media which has taken the industry and turned it on its side.

So today you get a look behind the scenes at the media in Prince George, given that the Numeris (formerly BBM) numbers are now out for the fall ratings of electronic media.

Let’s start with the local daily, The Citizen; according to Newspapers Canada annual circulation report of 2013, which was published in May of 2014.

Average week day paid circulation     9,665 , Saturday 10,026 , non paid average week day 82, Saturday 82, the Thursday free paper is listed as 14,230, and digital circulation is shown as 152.

The Numeris numbers released within the past few days shows the average weekly audience of all persons 12 years and older as;

CBC       24,400

CKKN     23,942

CJCI       21,499    full coverage area

CKDV     18,133    full coverage area

CRIX       17,952

Total radio listening is 105,926 weekly.

250News reached 104,978 during the week of November 16th -November 22nd, just 948 readers short of reaching the combined total of all of the major radio stations operating in Prince George . ( source Google Analytics)

It is interesting to watch the transformation of national media into the internet world indicating there is a new way of obtaining news and information gaining acceptance not only in this region, but across the world in general.

CFIS isn’t included? Many of us listen to that radio station exclusively when we are in town. Its nice to see that they have extended their range. Its 93.1 fm for anyone who hasn’t found it.

Is this unique visits or total visits? If I check the site 30 times a day is that 30 part of the 104.978 or is it just 1?

And if it is unique visits, is it unique IP or unique page views? For example I could visit 5 pages, which is one person but 5 unique page views in Google Analytics.

Also, since the site reached 104,978, what was the average length of time of stay per visit?

I really doubt those are unique visits. Comparing website hits to newspaper circulation and radio ratings are apple, oranges and melons.

Editor’s note…..
We base all of our stats on unique visits, which is an industry standard.
During the time in question 250News had 1,163,843 page views. Not Hits, page views.
Radio uses the cumulative total of all listeners over the age of 12 listening to the radio for more than 15 minutes at a time during that week.

250 news is the top dog, no matter how it is down played.

When looking at website ‘hits’, there are many ways to manipulate the numbers. I think it was Mark Twain that coined the phrase: Lies, damned lies, and statistics.

Besides, the numbers aren’t for the audience. They’re for advertisers to make decisions as to where to spend their money.

Wow, 94 the Goat is last…
Surprising? Nope. What do you expect with renaming a radio station to an animal that has absolutly nothing to do with the city its representing or anything to do with the North.
Not to mention unfunny, monatone DJ’s….
Was soooo much better 5 yrs ago…

If anyone is wondering, those stations (by frequency) are:

91.5 FM (CBC)
101.3 FM (CKKN – The River)
97.3 FM (CJCI – Country FM)
99.3 FM (CKDV – The Drive)
94.3 (CRIX – The GOAT [ugh])

Is The Goat that baaaaad now? :)

Frankly when I was visiting last month, and saw that CRIX had changed it’s name, the first thing that came to mind was Old Goat.

I don’t mind the music they play but several of the announcers are hard on the ears.

Radio has been unlistenable for years now. Nothing but horribly made local commercials with half a dozen tunes scattered throughout. And sat radio is so repetitive as to be nearly as bad.

Radio in the lower mainland is brutal. A few sprinklings of music, otherwise it’s blah blah blah filled in with ads. I never listen to any of them, other than Team 1040 during my home commute if the ‘Nucks are playing an early game.

I only listen to radio streams on iTunes. No commercials, and thousands of stations to choose from.

I personally think the only thing keeping radio stations on the air and viable are their contests. You have to listen to win.

Have been a supporter and follower of (opinion) 250 NEWS for many years, even when I was living down in the Similkameen Valley, my favorite news sites are 250 news, Castanet, and Keeping it real with Harvey Oberfeld . Congratulations 250 on your good numbers, keep up the good work…

94X Greatest Of All Time (GOAT) Really? Another great marketing idea from someone on Vancouver Island (bad idea). Well the stats as we know can be twisted to meet any ones needs.

Mean while the “Drive” could use some more iTunes cards so they can buy more music, when I say that, I mean more music from real artists that the demographic indicates are the core listeners. It is physically possible to play a CD to death, just like a cassette, it takes longer but it is possible… CD’s look better at the side of the road than 1000 feet of used tape.lol

I would like to see a local talk radio slash news station here locally that’s power by more than a 5 watt transmitter. Mind you that isn’t going to happen any time soon.

I see Cfur didn’t even post, mind you there isn’t anyone at the university radio station so that isn’t a big surprise. Try phoning the station, like today’s world it’s just voice mail to be deleted.

Cancon rules have made it possible for old mediocre songs to be played over and over and over again, just because they’re Canadian.

Just another reason why local radio is unlistenable.

Good point Mr. Belt. 54-40 won’t exist without government meddling.

Neither would Avril Lavigne and Justin Bieber. CanCon will help keep this pestilence upon us for decades. It doesn’t have to be old to be mediocre.

Anyone know what 550 and 620 am got back in the day?
