Prince George, B.C. – The City of Prince George has begun the installation of five way-finding signs throughout the downtown area.

The new signs will assist residents, tourists, and visitors locate various venues and landmarks.

“It’s going to facilitate a lot of information for the 2015 Canada Winter Games but not only that but after the games it’s going to be able to show people where certain attractions are,” says Mayor Lyn Hall.

The three sided signs incorporate the use of wood in their design and reflect the importance of the forest industry to the city.

They will be located at the following locations:

7th Avenue and Victoria Street
7th Avenue and Canada Games Way
6th Avenue and George Street
3rd Avenue and George Street
3rd Avenue and Quebec Street

Hall says it’s his hope that visitors will become acquainted with the markers as they spend time at Canada Games Plaza.

“We’re hoping they’ll be able to take a look and say here’s an information area, here’s signage we can follow.”

He says the signs represent the culmination of a lengthy and collaborative approach between the City, Downtown Prince George, and Initiatives Prince George.

Funding for the signs comes from the Downtown Initiatives Contingency Fund. A final cost will not be available until installation of the signs is complete.

Are the aggressive panhandling areas highlighted?

^ yes, it directs you to Vancouver

Prince George has “attractions” downtown?

This is a grate idea. I seen them in Vancouver and they are so helpful to tourists. Well done!

Why is the power out in the hart??

That’s hilarious! How many tourists do we get in downtown Prince George?

Downtown is dead; time to chuck that last clod of dirt on to it’s coffin and move on.

Great idea, but any great idea or something new and nice to the city always gets vandalized. Just give these signs time and they will be ruined.

Another expense that would probably not have happened except in the fine name of the Winter Games…
there seems to be a bottomless pit of money for that….

stand by more to come….

So many negative people on here.

“Downtown is dead; time to chuck that last clod of dirt on to it’s coffin and move on.”

What a solution to our problems. Let’s just keep spreading out as neighborhoods become less appealing. I’m glad to see the push to bring downtown back to life. Kamloops had the same issue, and their downtown is quite vibrant now. It’s going to take time, effort, and money, but I think it’s worth it to have a healthy core to our city.

I agree 100%, we need a vibrant downtown if we ever want to stop being a hick town but, after 20 odd years now, it appears the people in charge don’t really want one.

The one thing that all successful downtowns have is a night life. We don’t have one and council turned down the last application that would have help us to get one.

I think a new site should be created for those who have a positive spin on our community. It could be titled Hope-pinion-250

Forgive me if I’ve heard this before. We’ve been talking about downtown revitalization for the past 30 years. Past Mayors got elected on it.

@axman – I agree but that liquor license application was to expand an existing pub outside the downtown area.

@just my opinion – sounds like Hell Yeah PG is the site you’re looking for.

Really…. What are positive Penny and positive Pam doing on 250 ?

It’s an enjoyable walk, get accosted at Tim hortons, then head to the injection site..then stroll over to the pawn shops.

Actually tourists who come to Prince George via car, and via train are directed to downtown by the tourist bureau. So yes they do wander around. I sometimes cringe thinking about what they may run into, but what can you do. At this point in time, it is what it is.

Some elbow grease, and paint, could make a difference to a number of buildings, and hopefully the new Police Superintendent can make a difference to the hangers on and pan handlers.

We do have a number of good restaurants, bakeries, stores, business’s coffee shops, art galleries, court houses, lawyers offices, etc; etc; and of course the farmers market downtown, and of course the loan sharks, and second hand stores.

Its just that stretch around 3rd and George that needs to be spruced up and perhaps patrolled more often.

So lots to do downtown, People should get out more and take a stroll through downtown on a Saturday AM on their way to or from the farmers market. You might actually enjoy the walk.

Sorry, I was thinking of the place that was to go downtown. Coyote something or other?

Wayfinding signs??? Can’t get much more plain than that. How about veloscity signs instead of speed signs? How about educational signs in place of school zone signs? How about transportation corridor signs instead of street signs? How about the term wildfire instead of forest fire? Oops, we already have that since we stole it from the yanks several years ago. How about alderperson instead of alderman?

Agreed JohnnyB! There is a nice little plaque just outside the Ramada with a list of people dedicated to the revitalization of down town PG. I believe it was put up some time in the 80’s. Where are those people now? This fixing up downtown is a broken record skipping over and over….remember Cadilac Fairview! No plan, no action, no results

There is only one thing that will fix up downtown and that is loads of money and a plan Tons of money being spent on the outskirts which gives people absolutely no reason to go downtown except for maybe Northern Hardware and a few other specialty shops and restaurants. The rest is a slum of broken down buildings and pawn shops!
